The Rhine: A river born in the Swiss Mountains | The Rhine from above - Episode 1/5

Watch the other episodes of the series: bit.ly/RhineFromAbove
High up in the Swiss mountains, fed by glacial ice and eternal snow, lies the source of Europe's busiest river: the Rine. Hundreds of meltwater streams unite and gush into the valley. Today, they're not many places left where it is permitted to flow freely. The mighty river rushes impetuously down to Lake Constance, straightened and tamed, but undefeated.

The Rhine has been shrouded in myth over the centuries: No other river in Europe has more stories to tell - full of desires and longings. From a bird's eye view the film dives into the canyons of the Rhine source and at the Rhine Falls small drops of water fly past the audience so that they consider themselves right in the middle of the cascades. Panoramic shots amaze the audience all the way from Switzerland to the Netherlands. The Rhine is also one of the busiest waterways worldwide: The contradiction between industry and the urge for re-naturalization is vivid in everyday life of many of the protagonists - from the archaeologist at Lake Constance to the shepherd living in the green Rhine delta near Rotterdam.

Amazing documentary! keep on going with this great idea of rivers from above, all big rivers of Europe deserve a similar approach! deltas, lakes, wetlands and wildlife reservoirs, national parks and amazing mountains would be interesting to cover from above.

I had no idea the Rhine had been industrialized so much by humans throughout the years. I thought a lot of it was much more natural like it is here in America. Fascinating.

Which river or rivers this long in America have not been industrialized? Not doubting you, just curious to know because I'd love to know for kayaking.

America has its " habitual societies" killed off, remember...Both north and south america were "cleansed". Hence, there is not much cultural refference and representation left. Yeah parked in concentrationcam... reservations. One can "thank" abrahamism for that, the roman catholic version. A patriot ought never forget this.

Can't even imagine what the Romans thought when they came across this vast waterway and the tribes that defended the lands on the other side that smashed 3 Legions, the greatest Roman loss to this very day.
