The Revolutionary Resurrection | Acts 23:8 | N.T. Wright Online

In this video, N.T. Wright explains the various beliefs about the resurrections around the time of Jesus. He says that resurrection was an idea on the radical end of the political spectrum. All of this serves as background for Paul’s declaration that Jesus’s resurrection reorganizes everything around the Messiah and reorients beliefs about our own eventual resurrection.

Thanks for your encouraging message. May God speed up the “passing away” of this present evil age and hasten the Return of Jesus Christ in Person as the King of kings, the Lord of lords and the Prince of Peace. And please Father God enable all of us who belong to Christ, who form the Body of Christ, the Christian Church, to be ready as the very Bride of Christ. Amen.

We hear a lot about "Josephus and elsewhere" when discussing contemporary witnesses to the early Church. Could you tell us where or who is the "elsewhere"? It would be so good to have a broader range of non-biblical names and sources to hand in conversations with sceptics! Many thanks for your inspiring work.

Great question! N.T. Wright covers this in his online course, "The Resurrection of the Son of God," which is based on his book by the same name and is regarded as the definitive work on the resurrection. You can preview the course here: www.ntwrightonline.org/portfolio-items/resurrection/?portfolioCats=50%2C52%2C49%2C51 Some names of note who were contemporary witnesses to the early church are Tacitus, Pliny the Younger, Suetonius, and Philo of Alexandria. Hope this helps! --NTW Online Team

To be with the Lord, as explained in 1 Thessalonians, means being raised from the dead. We live, die (sleep), and will be raised. There is no existence for us as disembodied spirits. Our only hope is in the resurrected Jesus raising us from the dead. When I die, I am safe, for my life is in His hands, nothing will stop Him from raising me from the dead.

He who seeks his own glory is unrighteous: In John 17:1, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee.” While it appears Jesus is seeking his own glory here, he is not. This is clarified in John 17:5, where Jesus says “O Father, *glorify thou me with **_thine own self_** with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”*_ Jesus is the glory of his Father, and all glory belongs to the Father [God]. Only the Father can be worshiped and served (John 4:23-24), and He glorifies Himself in Jesus. God will only glorify Himself in another; He will never glorify others because all glory belongs to Him. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. How be it that this knowledge is not in every man; only those filled with God’s Holy Spirit can see the mysteries (1 Corinthians 8:6-7; Mark 4:11-12).
