The Residents - rare 1986 NZ interview!!
Музыка
One of the strangest groups to ever grace the musical landscape, San Francisco's The Residents, with trademark eyeballs and unfathomable approach to played NZ concerts in Auckland in Christchurch in August 1986. Spokesman Hardy Fox is interviewed here, giving perplexing answers to questions regarding this most unconventional of bands.

It's been one year since Hardy's passing. Rest in peace ❤️🎩👁️
I discovered these guys because of a reference from Les Claypool. SO MANY huge artists have referenced them as a major influence yet they are known to a relative few. I feel like they are a huge facet of the musical universe that I never knew about but are an absolutely fundamental part of.

In a way (out way), they're kind of like SPARKS, as in being extremely influential, but remaining very obscure

I got turned onto these guys in 1983, from my best friend's brother. I was 15. I used to play this BLASTING throughout the 'back bakery' I worked at throughout high school. I still randomly get a fb message from a dude I don't even keep in touch with who I worked with..who asks me if I still like Tunes of Two Cities, which is what I used to play. When I left Maui over 10 yrs ago, I had to abandon a picture disc album of their Bayou album..pictured with a 'Meet The Beatles' motif..where their pictures were of the Beatles with fucked up graffiti faces and the back was a cartoon drawing of them drawn as men with fish heads..Ringo Starfish, etc.. I bought it for $35 in 1985..priceless to me now!

DEVO, Primus, Ween, Mr. Bungle...The Residents are an institution 👁
At around 1:05 Hardy says "I'm not sure, actually I know myself" and it just dawned on me that he uses practically the same vocal inflection as the singer in the Residents' track Godsong off of Fingerprince when he says "I'm not sure" at the end of the song. It's just a really cool connection in my opinion. Definitely not a coincidence.

In Hardy's wikipedia it's said that it's known that he did perform in some of their stuff, maybe that's one of them
A fan in Orange County reported the stolen eyeball and the band convinced the guy to give it back.
At 3:12 Hardy predicts the Randy, Chuck, and Bob era of The Residents.
Rest in peace Hardy

Primary reason I like them alot and never listen to it that much. Except Eskimo, I've listen to it while sleeping or under some altered states. To which measure, its song are not sticked first degree in my head. Are you ready? Here I come Constantinople....
Turns out that Hardy was actually the primary composer and producer of the Residents, he retired during the Shadowland tour. He passed away recently. RIP.

@@theo9952 From what I've heard, someone named Eric Feldman (who was also in Beefheart's Magic Band during the Ice Cream For Crow era) took his place during the remainder of the tour, but the live band and the ones behind the studio lineup could be very different.

@@BeadyMurray Yes, Feldman also appears in the DEMONS dvd, though masked of course, he is in the credits anyway. He played in Snakefinger's Manual of Errors too. The Residents fans always took Homer Flynn and Hardy Fox for granted, I suppose, but unless stated*, nobody really knows who the rest of performing residents band might be. *Like the guitarist, who performs masked like the rest but his identity is known by his own word.

It's kind of obvious, but the Cryptic Corporation IS The Residents, but at the same time, not. The Residents are the embodiment of the music and performance itself, and not necessarily the people recording and playing instruments.
The Residents, amazing avantgard "rock" band, I love unexpectedness, creativity and way of creating their own world and ambience through music.
I saw The Residents in Adelaide South Australia back in 1986. RIP Hardy Fox.

Aw, bless him. Such a sad loss. Rest in peace Suburban Bather x
I like to think that the residents are actually just aliens trying to make human music and that's why their music is so strange.
I originally saw them in a video on NBC in the early 80s. It was a video show that came on after snl and sctv. I think it was called night flight or something like that. It showed a lot of offbeat acts. I loved them ever since. My wife thinks I'm nuts. But I'm not.
I attended their gig at The Tivoli in Sydney during that tour and it was a great thrill seeing them live with Snakefinger.

Jay Clem & John Kennedy left the collective long time ago early 80s ... The only ones left are Homer Flynn & Hardy Fox with occasional musicians and dancers prancing around them. Both guys are in their 70s now and they`re shedding more & more light into their identities and roles within the collective and productions - Only some die hard fans believe they have to save some " magic" .. But that has died out since ages - The Residents are still brilliant in what they`re doing though.
so cute...

The dates for the NZ tour (according to the Residents website) are thus: Christchurch 22-08-86 Auckland 23-08-86 Wellington 26-08-86 I was at the Christchurch show...... 18 years old......something I will never forget! The 13th Anniversary tour album they put out is great too. If you saw this tour, it's a necessity. Love how so many nz interviews I get recommended are ‘rare’.
At 2:00 when one Resident started walking around the ladder and another started following him, I was secretly hoping they would both start walking faster and faster and faster until they were both literally running around the room in a small circle.
They played Wellington also. I went to that (13th Anniversary tour)

I want the eye again !
Great post. In my opinion the band highlights the depth of social engineering. The Masonic "all seeing eye" looks very much like a CCTV or web cam. I particulary like the image of the skull holding a piece of corn, in their Constantinople vid. Given that their music is "grating" to say the very least, it appears that the band uses audio to shock one into a visual state, as the band seems more dedicated to concept rather than music.
