I was sitting courtside, first row, at this match, just off screen left near the ref. It was INTENSE. Matt and Julian had it out after that game right in front of us. Julian told matt to quit pickleball and go back to being a lawyer. Matt told Julian “you suck”. In the second game they were both staring each other down and yelling “lets go” and “come on” and “andiamo” directly in each others direction after nearly every point. Most exciting match I have ever seen, LOL!

It is interesting to see that pickleball players are allowed to stare down and yell at their opponents at every score. What a mind game. I play badminton and the same action would have resulted in red card if not being disqualified. You can yell all you want but you cannot stare down and yell at the other player. If Matt or Julian really wanted to and they didn't, was go after each other with "face shots" during dink rallies. Both are more than capable of flicking the ball really hard at someone's face. Yes the match was intense but not out of control as others perceive. For sure none of them are going to hang out at the bar afterwards.

I've never understand the complaint in net sports about the opponent hitting the ball right at them. Seems like in racquet sports, aiming for the other person is a better strategy than just putting it front and center in their forehand. If a batter hits a ball right at you, you use your glove to stop it from hitting your face. When I play tennis (and would do the same for PB), I use the racquet to stop the ball from hitting my face.

The difference between the two players; Julian enjoys the intensity in the game and doesn’t hide it, perhaps he should but nonetheless he clearly loves being vocal and energetic during the game. Matt Wright clearly does not appreciate this particularly aspect of Julian’s character and was probably getting pretty annoyed. The idea that getting annoyed would then cause you to hit Jessie Irvine in the face and not apologize for it. Nothing Julian did came close to that level of disrespect. What an unfortunate choice for him to make. Hitting a woman and not apologizing is pretty fucking low if you ask me.

It keeps the ball low, not allowing the other team to hit with force. Unlike badminton, these balls fly far, unlike a birdie, which you can hit hard and will lose velocity near the baseline. Heard about Pickleball for years and was wondering what it was all about. I heard it was popular amongst retirees and think it's a great way to stay active in old age.......still do in fact! But after watching young people playing and hearing the announcer taking it so seriously, i just think it's terrible. It's like tennis for babies and perhaps people with developmental problems....like an activity you'd see used at a physical rehab facility. Now the latest criticism is that Pickleball courts have sprung up everywhere and are so close to people's houses that the "racket" is causing people annoyance and stress. To quote a cancer patient who's home was located near a court...and who recently died. "The noise from the racket striking the ball was worse than having cancer." Sadly, one wonders if the incessant noise led to additional stress which ultimately weakened their immune system.

Some parks have pickleball and tennis courts side by side. Watching the two games side by side can leave little doubt that pickleball is much, much more exciting. Yet, pickleball is more exciting for a few other reasons: there are many more quick exchanges where the ball does not touch the ground for several hits by both teams and pickleball scoring is made only by the serving team thus there are more comebacks. Pickleball is also a ton more sociable than tennis or other sports because of the following: 1. a game to 11 points is often done in app. 15-20 minutes and hence players often change partners for a new game, 2. one can play each game with a new partner and thus partner with maybe a dozen or so partners over a 4 hour time frame, 3. one can play against a person in one game then partner with that same person in the next game and because there are many more pickleball players than tennis, badminton and table tennis one does not have to make date and time arrangements with particular people to play; pickleball players typically just show up and have several others there to play. Hence, it is not even debatable; pickleball is a far better sport than tennis. To compare pickleball to table tennis and badminton is so silly it deserves little response

Although Julian seemed a bit too vocal - and, in fact, a bit out of control, Matt was an absolute jerk. He was hitting Jesse - the female opponent - with hard body shots and did not apologize once. Even was laughing and was celebrating hitting Julian in the groin. This is LOW CLASS behavior. Note that Matt apologized every time he hit someone with the ball - like a gentleman would be expected to do. Sure, Julian was loud and obnoxious, but he at LEAST had the decency to act like a human being when he hit people with the ball -- which is something Matt was not capable of doing, apparently. Matt behaves like a low-class, ill-mannered jerk and no game or victory is worth losing your basic human decency or humanity over. Period.
