With the pan removed, you can see the plastic tube at the drain hole. Draining the fluid, a 5mm hex or "Allen" wrench is used to remove the internal tube, this allows the fluid to drain. Before refilling, the tube is reinstalled FINGER TIGHT, it's just a level tube. Full capacity may show as six quarts, but this includes the torque converter. It usually requires about 4.5 qt. Change the fluid every 50,000 miles. Guess what the burning issue has been over the years with the 09G? Harsh shifts? We would replace the valve body assembly, simple as that. As long as the customer didn't drive it for a long time in the case of slipping, that transmission is really tough! The most common long term problem is leaking within the two transmission harnesses. There's a temperature sensor in the bottom of the valve body, and pressurized oil works its way through the sensor to the harness. The common symptom of a valve body issue appears as the transmission warms, very harsh apply in those lower gears. Online you will hear about the topside speed sensor, this, in my experience, never was an issue with the "big valve body" 09G, that was the earlier 01M.

I am working on a new project and happen to be a 2007 New Beetle Convertible. I am surprised how easily you can find junkyard parts there. Nesr me, here in Canada its very hard

Did this fix your hard shift issue? I have an 03 and it’s shifting hard into first. I ordered a new filter and gasket and going to drain and put new fluid

I can’t remember, think the solenoids were like $150 for a set… but I did all the work. You have to drain the fluid and remove the pan and the valve body… then replace the solenoids and put it all back together
