Fascinating subjects, unusual giants of history, well worth a listen and best of all an hour or two of time that will provide, enlightenment and knowledge of people you may of heard of or may not, thank you Will.
Will Durant is a curative for the current hostility between diametric extremes of USA's Culture Wars, and should be promulgated as such. All the modern writers and speakers of either side seem intent on exacerbating the conflict instead of resolving it.

@@michaellevine2566 I got a thing for a fancy prose, but I'll keep it down to 2 "syllab's" per word. We'll agree on the left and right factions, yes? Blue and red states? Of course Durant can't travel to the past and address the crowds (I assume that's what you meant. The scene from the Book Of Mormon where Christ appears to be Western Hemisphere civilizations comes to mind.) Short and sweet, Durant isn't a firebrand. He tries to reconcile. He isn't of the gun nut faction. Nor a critical theory shill. I was drawn to this passage of his (pardon lengthy quote from Wikipedia article) "On decline and rebuilding of civilizations "Much like Oswald Spengler, he saw the decline of a civilization as a culmination of strife between religion and secular intellectualism, thus toppling the precarious institutions of convention and morality: "Hence a certain tension between religion and society marks the higher stages of every civilization. Religion begins by offering magical aid to harassed and bewildered men; it culminates by giving to a people that unity of morals and belief which seems so favorable to statesmanship and art; it ends by fighting suicidally in the lost cause of the past. For as knowledge grows or alters continually, it clashes with mythology and theology, which change with geological leisureliness. Priestly control of arts and letters is then felt as a galling shackle or hateful barrier, and intellectual history takes on the character of a "conflict between science and religion." Institutions which were at first in the hands of the clergy, like law and punishment, education and morals, marriage and divorce, tend to escape from ecclesiastical control, and become secular, perhaps profane. The intellectual classes abandon the ancient theology and-after some hesitation-the moral code allied with it; literature and philosophy become anticlerical. The movement of liberation rises to an exuberant worship of reason, and falls to a paralyzing disillusionment with every dogma and every idea. Conduct, deprived of its religious supports, deteriorates into epicurean chaos; and life itself, shorn of consoling faith, becomes a burden alike to conscious poverty and to weary wealth. In the end a society and its religion tend to fall together, like body and soul, in a harmonious death. Meanwhile among the oppressed another myth arises, gives new form to human hope, new courage to human effort, and after centuries of chaos builds another civilization."

Years ago I knew an older lady, Mary Atkins, who told me she lived beside the Durants in California. I don't think she was bragging because the subject matter that led to our friendship and a long correspondence was history of a very different kind. It is curious how we can associate recording voices in such a way that they replace the 'originals' in our own minds, no doubt because they are trained & talented speakers while the 'originals' were not. An example and an exception of sorts, of this kind might be M.L. Cohen's reading of Henry Lewis Mencken's 'In Defense of Women', which can be found at Librivox. It is almost impossible for me to imagine he's not Mencken, even though I have heard a recording of Mencken's voice. Cohen, who is probably not a professional reader, is a real pleasure listen to. librivox.org/in-defense-of-women-by-hl-mencken/ Mencken's book might be too controversial for you to present but then the reaction & commentary on your message board would be rich. I have urged it on both women and men but have consistently run into strong resistance from both sexes. Men cannot easily get past the 1st chapter while most women love the first chapter, start to get wary with the second and probably don't ever finish the third. What a pity ! He has an excellent sense of humour, draws much of his inspiration from the philosophers you yourself have uploaded readings about, and his 1918-1920's predictions proved completely accurate by the end of the century. The issues he was raising way back then are very current today - proving that the play never changes . . . only the actors do.
