The Remarkable Rise of Brest

Спорт

Despite having the fourth lowest budget in Ligue 1, and having been one of the favourites to be relegated this season, in a campaign reminiscent of Leicester City in the 2015-16 Premier League season, Stade Brestois 29 are currently second in France's top flight, trailing only state-owned PSG, and well on course to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at Brest's remarkable and almost totally unexpected rise, why they are the biggest underdogs in Europe this season, and how they have managed it.

    You, and Maqwell, manage to make videos that even someone like me, who doesnt watch football outside the WC/Euros, finds incredibly interesting to watch. Especially when you do videos where you analyse the rise and/or fall of (national-)teams and put them in perspective from a (socio-)political/economical point of view makes it a great watch even for people outside the fandom of the sport itself.

    Hello! I have a video suggestion for you. In Austria there is a club called "GAK" which has had a very interesting history in the past 20 years. In 2004 they were Austrian Champions for the first time in their history but had to fight for survival in the coming years because of financial problems. They were subsequently relegated into the 3rd tier of Austrian football where they survived for another 5 years, even winning the 3rd tier twice but not getting the license for the 2nd tier. They were then dissolved and rebuilt from 0 by the fans. Starting in the lowest tier of Austrian football (8th tier) and winning promotion EVERY year until they got back to the 2nd tier, even managing the previously hard fought 3rd tier on their first try. They then spent 4 seasons in 2nd tier just to miss promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga by 1 point on the last day of the season because they only tied their match while their direct opponents won. This year they are so far 14 points ahead of the competition and are basically on the way to the biggest comeback in Austrian footballing history. (As you can imagine by this I have been a lifelong fan of the club :D). I think the downfall and rise of the club could make for a really great video and sincerely would be happy if you could make such a video. Thank you!

    @@MrRafting The problem with City and Arsenal is that they have a tough UCL fixtures, with Arsenal facing out-of-the-form Bayern Munich. As you may know, Bundesliga are currently 2nd, but their point gap between them and Premier League for this season's coefficient (not the regular one, which is based on the last 5 seasons of performance) is close. In addition, West Ham United had to play against Bayer Leverkusen, who were a big favourites to win the Europa League due to the invincibility records in both domestic and this competition. Bayer Leverkusen were unstoppable, but sometimes they didn't play so well like against Qarabag on the Round of 16, when they were 0-2 down in both legs, with Leverkusen scoring the two injury time winning goals during the 2nd leg at home, which means there is a chance West Ham United might upset them. In order for Premier League to have 5 clubs on 24/25 UCL, Arsenal and West Ham United must beat their oppositions, while Atletico Madrid must do the same thing against Borussia Dortmund in the other QF. The 1st place for Premier League is very unlikely for this season if Fiorentina get better results in the Conference League, which means Serie A and their 5 UCL spots will be safe enough, despite the fact there are no Serie A clubs remaining in this Champions League, and Milan and Roma were play against each other in Europa League QF.

    Alfie, I am still hoping you would make a video about Thai football situation as well. It seems like ever since they got the new Japanese manager, they have an absurdly high optimism because of their good Asian Cup results and an earlier draw away to Korea (1-1), they started to thinking like "we are going to the World Cup". Yet the problem of Thai football lies entirely on the grassroot, and their new optimism appeared to be just a facade to cover it. The Thai League, one of the richest football leagues in Asia, have seen overspending of a massive amount of money to buy foreign superstars (as some called it, the Mexican way) by many Thai clubs (which are also pretty rich and wealthy by standard), which, in turn, greatly impacted and stifled Thai domestic talents and created a situation where Thailand has been an underachiever for many decades. If people think that Chinese football is that bad, then they haven't seen what's going on with Thailand yet.

    There are only 2 positive surprises that I would compare to Brest this season : Leverkusen being unbeaten so far and certainly capable to continue like that until the end of the season, and Heidenheim which is maintaining quite comfortably for their first season in Bundesliga after a remarkable rise.

    Some precisions about the stadium. It is grade 2 now so it could host Europa League games but not Champions League. The city has to make accomodations of a few things to be able to host Champions League games. But the DOF said that they believe it could be done for next year and they are mostly positive about it.

    It’s rather common for French overachieving clubs to plummet quite deeply in the next season, I genuinely don’t think that it’s going to be different this time around.

    Can Alfie make a video about Paraguay's ongoing downfall? From once a team that frightened even some of the world's mightiest with our discipline football to now a team that can't even beat Venezuela and struggle against Bolivia, Nicaragua and even some small CONCACAF nations, our situation is so horribly bad now.

    When the French Ligue 1 has become like the corrupted Premier League,where Paris Saint Germain which is one of my favourites ever,have made the league boring over the past five years due to them spending recklessly,Stade Brestois 29 have defined the odds to be powerfully be in the second place in the division and I knew them ever since I was a child,good friends!!!They were relegated several times before being promoted recently and I hope this one of the smallest respective teams in their history develop well and in future,recruit even well and slowly start winning trophies in future,good friends!!!LONG LIVE,STADE BRESTOIS 29!!!🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️🏋‍♂️

    They have to be called Presst because of their clever pressing. They exactly know when to attack high or deep and at the same time they are always aggressive and robust.

  • @pritapp788
    @pritapp788Ай бұрын

    It would be great for them to stabilise their position among France's top teams. The most likely scenario however is a lot less exciting: it entails Brest following the same path as Auxerre and Montpellier, 2 other French teams that qualified for the CL unexpectedly then expectedly got smashed and saw their league form unravel too. No resources to commit to such a competition. In fact Auxerre ended up relegated a year after qualifying for CL and have since only been back to the top flight for one single season.

    Still waiting for a video about Iran's football crisis and how a country with 80 million people and insane football passion failed to produce a far more superior football team, how the Iranian dictatorship stifled their progression, the tragedy of our football league, and our upcoming demise of this golden generation squad when many of our key players like Azmoun, Taremi and Jahanbakhsh are increasingly older and we have no plan to find replacements for these players. If anything we are truly the tragic underachievers given countries with smaller population like South Korea and Australia have made more fames in the World Cup than us.

    Brest enjoyed nine top-flight seasons between 1981 - when they won the Ligue 2 title, their only significant piece of silverware - and 1991 before financial difficulties hit. The club, which had secured a best-ever eighth-placed L1 finish in 1986/87, was declared bankrupt, and needed to restart the long climb back out of the doldrums. They were back in Ligue 2 by 2004 - helped by an emerging young talent named Franck Ribéry - and Ligue 1 in 2010. the club has spent most of its time in Ligue 2 following relegation in 2013. However, they returned to the top flight as second-tier runners-up in 2018/19, and - following a 14th-placed finish in their first season back in Ligue 1 - appear set to establish themselves as one of France's top 20 clubs.
