    Yeah, jazz gets a bad rap from classical musicians for being some sort of lawless musical void, but that is for sure not the case. Our theory is based on classical theory- we just took it in a different direction. But the fundamentals are the same. You learn the basics and then learn how to elevate your playing beyond the rules you were taught.

    I wish they'd done their research better and actually talked to music directors of both classical and chinese orchestras. Speaking from a chinese instrument player's POV, there are so many things that I feel did an injustice to represent chinese instrumental music. (Choice of musical piece, wrong instrumental choice, etc. etc.) Ethnic instruments already don't get enough representation as it is, even in their own respective ethnic groups. Imagine what it could have been if they did it right. What a wasted opportunity.

    Conflict in music is mostly internal, between yourself and well yourself. Occasionally you get yourself vs some crusty old jerk, but that rarely makes drama, everyone bows to the esteemed geezer. I guess some conflict occurs when several are vying for lead of the section or concertmaster, but hopefully that abates once the tryout is over and you can work together. Yea most of the conflict is internal.

    The music department where I went to highschool had SO MUCH CONFLICT AND DRAMA. (rant) First chair violinist had a gf for two years but had a huge crush on 1st chair viola (???) music director caught two kids trying to 'do it' on a charter bus ride, fighting over cubby spots/music stands, band and orchestra shared the same room and sometimes band practice would run into orchestra's, these two kids that had been together since Freshman year split in Senior year and she left orchestra right before a concert....oh lawd...

  • @snowyminnesota6028

    @snowyminnesota6028

    Not to say that conflict in music isn't real. But it mostly happens between people who have self-esteem/reality-check issues. Or actual artistic differences. As for "crusty old jerk": Just wondering if I qualify based on the "old" adjective. I'm definitely "old," as in "OK Boomer" old. Finally, after years of study, work, family-raising, widowhood, and grandparenthood, and still making music, I've reached this formerly unimaginable number of years. I actually pat myself on the back for it, and now finally understand why my elders, now mostly dead, used to just smile and nod at my earnest and youthful nonsenses. Music, however, is eternal. There are Greats a lot older than me who are still greats; and Greats a lot younger than me, too. My Bach hero is Nathan Milstein. My Prokofiev hero is Gil Shaham. My overall favorite violinist ever is Hilary Hahn. (Of course your heroes on those fronts may differ: we could talk about that.) Age has NOTHING to do with it. Quit with the ageism, whether it's the dismissive and pejorative "crusty old jerk," or "esteemed geezer," equally pejorative but grudgingly accepting of superior achievement, while implying that younger people do it better and the aforementioned geezer only gets whatever privilege is going on account of seniority. I do have a story about a fantastic violist, a member of the orchestra I'm privileged to play in, who taught and played up until she was 99, and just barely missed playing at the age of 100. She would certainly fall into what you call the esteemed geezer category, which I'm also approaching. I know for sure that after she was about 90 she wasn't contributing much, but she was nevertheless deservedly honored. I enlarged music for her, so that it could easily be read, for every concert she played in. You yourself might be old someday and maybe still playing, IF you're lucky. If you're still honored enough based on your contribution to the art that your orchestra saves a seat for you. Good luck with that. Good luck also with maturing to become a person that children and young adults can look to for encouragement in their own artistic lives. Because the cycle of music-making should not end with you. What will you give to ensure the survival of all that you've been given? How much love, how much joy will you pass on? I know I've made a bigger deal out of your comment than you ever meant to provoke, casually tossed off as it was. But your "crusty old jerk" and "esteemed geezer" phrases definitely deserve to be called out. Think again, young padawan. And, with gratitude, mine the wisdom of your elders in the art to which you aspire. Signed, Could Be Your Grandma.

    @@johncrowerdoe5527 Meh. That would be a pretty shallow (Music Appreciation 101, Chapter 1) view of the situation. From the perspective of an orchestral violinist who has accompanied many great soloists, I can tell you that what in fact happens is that the orchestra does everything possible to support the soloist and let her/him shine. The "competition" model is a remnant of the baroque concerto grosso form, where the orchestra was much, much smaller.

  • @johncrowerdoe5527

    @Zukai Hayakawa just my 2 cents worth: There are left-handed dizis (take for instance those used by Phang Thean Siong from SCO as an example) which are held this way (by 'right' I presume you meant the audience's right and not the performer's right). As for embouchure, I guess everyone's anatomy is different anyway so I wouldn't nit-pick on that. Esp since you mentioned his mouth not looking open - in traditional Dizi teaching, I believe the size of the aperture is said to be '米粒般大小' (lit. Size of a grain of rice). In many modern Dizi musicians you can barely see the aperture as well. Not that I would really know since I don't play the Dizi - just an impression based on what I've seen in the CO scene.
