The Red Balloon (1956) is a timeless classic for kids of every age, and winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1956. (The only short film ever to be nominated.) Director Albert Lamorisse directs his own son, Pascal, in a tale of resilience, empathy and identity that speaks directly to a child's imagination, and stays with us into adulthood. I watched it when I was 5 and showed it to my daughter today at age 4, hoping it was as relevant now as it was back then. See how it went.

I'm 21 and I saw this film back in 2006 when I was 6 years old in school. I felt really for the boy and the balloon.

I saw this movie in the first grade. This movie is very moving. The analysis this father has is valid and should be a good point of view. For me... This movie stayed with me and I am seeing it again at age 54. I used to be a teacher, however I never had the opportunity to expose young children to this wonderful film. If you have that ageless part of you remaining, share this film with young minds. It will be worth it. Lastly, the simplicity and wonder of this film will always be with me and when I really need to smile, I know The Red Balloon will always be there. God bless you!

Thank you for this uplifting comment! My goal is to do a video on all of Albert Lamorisse's films, as some of them are little-known and deserve more attention. I'd love to get more kids to see The Red Balloon, too.

I experienced The Red Balloon during my college year in a class, and I instantly fell in love with it. However, rewatching it again so many years later, I found it to be darker and bittersweet as you can interpret the ending as happy as the balloons are colorful in contrast to the dulling gray Paris city and take the boy for a ride of his life. Then again, it could also be viewed as the demise of a boy and his balloon as his soul is lifted into heaven by the other balloons.

There is definitely that interpretation, I agree. If you've seen "Stowaway in the Sky" (also by Lamorisse) you can sense the progression of a theme of loss, at least one of innocence, at the end as that film's balloon leaves the boy (also played by Pascal) at the edge of the sea and continues on into the next realm...very moving. A little reminiscent of 400 Blows, which had just come out in 1959.

I saw the film when I was 8 years old, I am now 64 and I still enjoy watching it. When I first watched it in school, the film had a great effect on me. I felt very connected and could relate to what was happening in my life at age 8. The bullying and lack of true friends. I think for me, at the time, an inanimate object such a Red Balloon would have been a friend to spend time with . This film is ageless and should be enjoyed by the young and old and everyone In between. Wonderful review, it made me smile Tthank you for sharing.

I saw this when it first came out! I wanted a balloon like in the film - unfortunately if it's not filled with helium it just trails along the ground so I was a bit disappointed. I enjoyed your review - this really is a special film and it's stayed with me for over 60 years. I had a beautiful book of the film with some wonderful photos of different scenes. Our house was flooded during a terrific storm in 1958 and the book just floated away somewhere - rather like the ending of the film!

I first saw this movie in 1975 at school. The class saw it on a film projector. I saw it again in 1976, 1977. The ending scene when the ballon was symbolically killed in the end made all the kids in the class cry. then rejoice with the final scene with all the ballons carrying the little boy. I forgot about this movie until I saw it on HBO max.

Then I tell them never be a bully because they always do bad thing. I always ask them if the teach had show them it yet. All my kids said, " No."

The boy is played by Pascal Lamorisse, the director's son. He also appears in the film White Mane a the younger brother of the main character, and then again as an older boy in the film Stowaway in the Sky, all by Albert Lamorisse. I'm publishing a White Mane video in a few days, and will be watching all his films soon for review. Cheers.

I watched this movie a number of times in school in the late 60s/early 70s. This was MY take on it: The balloon represents our Lord, Jesus Christ. The boy loved the balloon and wished no harm to it. "I shall never leave you, nor forsake you" comes to mind as the balloon follows Pascal around. The bullies (the Romans) wanted to kill that balloon even though it did nothing against them. Eventually, they got it (IE the crucifixion). First a slow painful experience. Then death (the big stomp). The mass rounding up of all the balloons is the resurrection and the promise of eternity with Jesus for all who choose to believe.

Sadly I can't get anyone to watch this half an hour of pure magic despite 'sharing' it to Facebook...it must be because modern technology has killed the wonder ! Mind you it's really irritating to see it interrupted by adverts because You Tube for some reason just won't let it play through !

Hi, it's hard to find something like this film that is also kid-friendly, in my opinion. The director Albert Lamorisse made White Mane, which has been restored on DVD, and can sometimes be seen on KZread (in poor quality) but that film, as lyrical and mesmerizing as it can be, is also tough to watch sometimes (for kids). The horses fight and bite each other, and there is a little blood. It's in black and white, so not as harsh as it might be, but I haven't shown it to my child yet (she's 6, maybe when she's 8 or so). Also the boy and the horse swim out to sea at the end...you could interpret that as drowning...but it seems meant to be more symbolic. A youngster might be scared by it. (But it will make an impression.) He also made "Circus Angel" which I'm trying to find a good copy of to watch and review. For a very sweet, though less profound, experience for kids which seems somewhat motivated by The Red Balloon, check out "The Blue Umbrella" short by Pixar. My daughter loves it when it's on, although it is a bit forgettable. Also their "La Luna" is one of my daughter's favorite Pixar shorts.
