In MUCH of the world it's under appreciated... Now is a good time to buy XD Spinel's popularity is growing incredibly fast though, and we're seeing the price of certain colours skyrocket accordingly.

I love spinel! I am acquiring quite a few. Lol I have a few pink purple and a couple of colbolt blue. I have yet to get a good red because the price is quite a bit higher for them. My biggest is a nice purple in the 3.5 carat range. I would love to get something in the 5 carat size.

Spinel is a favourite for many gem dealers aswell - excellent crystal. Red is indeed a challenge to get in good quality/ colour. The price is starting to give ruby a run for its money.

Hi I was wondering if you could talk about pricing synthetic stones like hydrothermal emeralds what they are worth thanku love your videos.

Hi Oakley, thanks for the question. I personally don't deal in synthetic stones, but the key factors that affect their prices are described below: The pricing of synthetic stones is like that of any manufactured product: the price is dependent on supply. Hydrothermal emeralds are grown on large seed plates, so they can grow lots and lots of large, often clean and deeply coloured synthetic emeralds. If the businessfolk have enough ambition, they can grow as much as they can scale their business, and they can also flood the market with material, or restrict production to keep prices high. It's totally up to these companies how much material is on the market. With natural stones, miners and prospectors can only mine when they find a deposit, and until the deposit is exhausted. They can mine as hard as they want, but there is no guarantee that they're going to get stones of any large size, or of a nice colour, or acceptable clarity. They can work as hard as they want, but high quality products are not guaranteed to them by any means. So when there is a natural rarity in the supply, the price of natural stones can rise as high as the collectors are willing to pay for the rarest of the rare and the most beautiful among the rare. The prices of synthetics however are dependent only on people running factories and how many consumers want a manufactured green thing. To know the current price, i'd suggest you call or email those manufacturers and go from there. I hope this description helps.

An interesting thought, and I think that would be a series of videos involving some excursions, rather than a one off. This is like an ant-hill that leads to the goblin kingdom, if you'll pardon a bizarre turn of phrase.

Black spinels are cheap and gorgeous. They are opaque but very, very shiny (if faceted).

Black spinel is indeed a great material, and as a straight-black stone, its one of my favourite. Its durable, a true black (not brownish black), and has a phenomenal luster. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Dan, I'm a fan of the 3-5 carat range for most stones, as I feel this is a good size for imposing, but non-clunky rings. They also tend to be a good value: balancing being a good investment range for rarity, without being out of financial reach of someone of moderate means. Sapphires and rubies though... anything close to 1 carat and above is on my radar. There are some really attractive rubies and sapphires starting at 0.80ct and they grab your eye in a way that many other stone types won't. Let beauty lead.

is a synthetic Spinel (Aquamarine Color) valuable? I bought a ring that is suppose to be Aquamarine, but I noticed that using UV light it turns pink color. so it contains Cobalt. do synthetic spinel turn turn to pink as well?

If you check out about 1:10 in the video, you'll see this tool called the chelsea filter. Thats what you'd be looking through in order to see pink originating from cobalt or chromium (and in the case of a suspected aquamarine ring.. would mean the ring is not aqua and probably synthetic spinel etc.) If you're not using the chelsea filter, you won't be seeing the same type of reaction and you would want to go to a different test~ Thx for the question.

Synthetic spinel is super common, so it is only going to have a commercial value based on its beauty and quality of the stone. Natural stones gain additional value through their rarity.

So instead of just lobbing emails , i sent an email to answer some stuff and ask a question. My pictures arent working propperly and im not sure what is going on. I tried twice to send that picture of the green sapphire looking purple in a picture and it has twice been replaced by picture of octagon cut tanzanite.

Spinel are indeed an excellent mineral and gemstone, though i'll caution you about being so faithful that they're never enhanced. Some suspicion is a healthy thing in gemology, because treatments and enhancements always adapt when a gemstone becomes valuable, and spinel price has indeed climbed to heights it hasn't seen before in history. Who knows what will be discovered, so it is best to keep our eyes peeled 😁
