the REASON why the summer events were bad (SSO Training Chat)

⭐🐴 Oh boy! A polarizing video with strongly worded title and hot takes. What could possibly go wrong?
But in all seriousness, I think the SSO community needs to take a step back and look at everything that's going on with the game. Taking a minute to gather some perspective can help us understand what is going on, what the game makers are deciding and can ultimately make us a better and supportive community to keep this game going for years to come.

i feel like what would really help them would be to instead release monthly updates instead of weekly ones. i am willing to accept that as long as they are able to release worthy updates instead of underwhelming ones each week. many people would get mad, but I feel it would ease a lot of the pressure to get an update out each week and they would be actually able to sit back and really think on their next move and how they can make the game better

I think that's a good suggestion. People may be upset regardless, but I don't know of any other game that releases weekly content updates.

I think the main reason Camp Western was so much lower tier in my books is two fold. One, it was too quick after the last event. Two, Spring did *so* well and was so fun it made me optimistic for how the events were going to run. I fully agree that events shouldn't take up all of their manpower, but transparency and saying "Hey! We're focusing on something big so Camp Western will be a lot like last year so we can deliver better things!" Would've for sure gone a long way.

i heavily agree on the "players look back on events with rose tinted glasses" point, not only were a lot of people young at the time, those were the first events they ever did (some people even joined during an ongoing event). so of course they'll remember it being better than it was, the game was new and fun to them. a personal gripe of mine is when these same players talk about how 99% of quests//events now are fetch quests, when (with the exception of halloween maybe?) all the older events were made up almost solely by fetch quests, and running from A. to B. getting stuff from npcs. i agree festivals can be improved upon a lot, but the old ones arent a perfect example of what they should look like.

So much, all of this!! Fetch quests are kinda the core of the game, but so many new mechanics have been rolled out too (the rune puzzles in hollow woods, the matching puzzle in the fort library, the slidey bar timing thing - though they're really overusing this one, it's still fun) It's like they don't actually remember what the game was like sometimes.

Old SSO player here (since ~2012, cant believe its been that long since GH! i thought it was 2014 but nope lmao) i wanted to shed some light on why i personally miss ‘old star stable.’ Kind of a long post - just want to get my thoughts together. --- For some clarity, i DO NOT hate or even dislike ‘new SSO.’ if i saw what the horses look like now in 2014 i think i would legitimately start crying. They are all that i would have dreamed about in old SSO and more- i thought the horses looked ugly at the time. Also, the environments - HUGE upgrade. Absolutely massive. I ADORE those - even new Hollow Woods. --- I’ve also played the seasonal SSO games. To me, they don’t quiite hit the mark. The stamina system is atrocious, the horses are even uglier (not to mention the lack of diversity)- but i enjoyed seeing the sparks of what would later become the SSO that I love. It was cool seeing Firgrove especially - a closed-off town prepared for danger? What a cool concept! --- What i miss about ‘old SSO’ is a little more abstract than straight up quality of updates or things to do: quality has been on a linear upward trend the newer sso has become, and ‘things to do’ in SSO have remained mostly the same (until new mechanics such as druid training, herbs, magic trees etc were added, which are strictly NEW.) 1. I miss its old visual design. I miss the old website, the old launcher straight from the website. I miss the old comic book style portraits, the old music design and leitmotifs. They were so much more niche but to this day theyre still the ‘Star Stable’ visual and audio language that i remember, No matter how much they rebrand. 2. I miss the old sense of true danger and mystery. When i was a kid, I’d stay awake at night thinking about the halloween update. It was SCARY, but it still drew me in. The lore was mysterious - Garnok felt like a weight hanging above everything rather than some vague, mysterious badguy. The Golden Hills were so entrancing when they were released because of the mysterious entities - the Galloper, the ghosts, that SCARECROW RACE!! you know, the one in the Star Rider games?? that got DELETED in new SSO??? Nowadays, because of the expansion of SSO to a wider audience, the ‘spookiness’ of the world has been dialed waaay down. It feels wrong - that was a CORE part of old SSO’s identity. 3. I miss the old way that SSO treated new regions. Like a dangerous new frontier rather than a new pretty expansion. Goldenhills was TERRIFYING when it came out to baby me. The Harvest Counties were a new frontier filled with possibility and danger. Hidden Dinosar was straight up FIGHTING the player - it was an openly HOSTILE environment and yet it was so enchanting! Even places as new as South Hoof were as beautiful as they were mysterious. Dundull fully captured that vibe for me as well - but since then, it feels like SSO doesn’t trust the player to be interested without upfront flashiness instead of an extended, alluring sense of danger and discovery (in this way, Redwoods almost fell flat for me. it is GORGEOUS but ultimately not very mysterious anymore.) 4. What i truly miss the most about SSO is the sense of exploration and discovery. The sense of hacking through the dangerous wilderness with your trusty steed by your side. I was OBSESSED with collecting stars - that was how i spent a huge chunk of my free time, but now they’ve faded into the background. Little easter eggs were so fun to discover and look at guides online for - other people loved it too! That was why we as kids were so imaginative when we played SSO - there was so much mystery to get that imagination chugging. Such as: -The Forgotten fields :why were they forgotten? People made so many movies and shows about it- please go watch some of them!! In the field itself though… the little rivers, the stone circles, the elder tree… they were all so inspiring! -Firgrove ; so many little special nooks and crannies- The apocalypse pole bending course, anyone? - Everwind Fields - Who’s been to the UFO? Show of hands? That was my favorite easter egg :D - The Goldenhills beach - The spikes, the labyrinth, the boats! People wild roled there ALL THE TIME - i SPECIFICALLY looked for goldenhills wild roles. -Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur again - The GATE??? The balloons?? The OLD FJORDS??? - Harvest Counties - The swamp was FULL of easter eggs that were difficult to path to.. the little abandoned or barely populated villages… the gorge… the little secret cave… -Honorable mention to Moorland-Fort Pinta because OH MY GOD. the MINES!!! They gave me nightmares, they were the perfect example of what im talking about. The fort pinta beach was FULL of mysterious little mini-areas that I loved to explore. I’d say I’m a pretty imaginative adult, but lately SSO has dialed back on that sense of mystery and discovery (I think Hollow Woods was a MASSIVE step in the right direction, though!!). I’m confident that the team sees this too and is working to bring it back, but for now it’s still a huge nostalgia point for me - and many other old players, i imagine! I think the Western event was trying to channel some old Goldenhills vibes with the wolves, does anyone else see it? Either way, looking forward to what the team has in store❤

I'm glad you have so many fond memories of SSO new and old! I do still have a feeling the game was just much scarier for you as a kid because you were a kid. Some of the things you mentioned that are still in the game, I played through as an adult. The Golden Leaves quests are still the same (not the specifically Halloween ones which were much scarier, even seeing playthrough as an adult, but the ones to unlock Golden Hills). I can see how scary Scarecrow Hill and Pi would be as a kid! But playing through it as an adult, I definitely wasn't scared, and I think it just highlights how experiencing the game as a kid would feel more impactful and why as we grow up the game doesn't FEEL the same, even if it is. Like if you experienced this new quest and Devils Gap as a kid, I think you would have felt the same fear mixed with awe you expressed about Dino Valley! Both were still extremely mysterious and hostile and I feel like they really hit that vibe you were talking about! The other thing about #4, I TOTALLY feel you! I love collecting. I've completed all of the stars, memories, photos, spiders, everything! I have nothing left to collect through exploration and that does make me sad, but it's also the nature of secret collection mechanics in games - you're going to eventually collect them all. That's why I loved the renegade chests and the horses so much I think! I loved exploring and looking! It would be cool if SSO added a daily collectible for us to find that could appear anywhere maybe. And like finding the item could be sold for like 200 shillings or something. Thank you for sharing your experiences 💜

As an intermittent subscription player, I mostly play during festivals, Mainly Fall, Winter and Rainbow. I collect the fantasy designed horses and that is also why those three festivals appeal to me most. Whilst cloud kingdom had some issues, it was still so much fun to play, and I loved that it was linked with Rainbow festival and the digging for gold, chasing clouds and the violinist we raced. The tack was extra cool too, Im from the 80s so rainbows are my fave, im sad how shrinked down it is this year, however the superb magic horses have made up for some of the sadness. I also play the main quest, and it often jumps to areas of the map im locked out of, I have to google how to access them, which is usually some obscure side quest. (so its not really obvious) I feel like completing parts of the main quest should open these areas automatically once they are reached. Atm i'm stuck without access to Epona, with a quest inside it from the main story its jumped to, that I cant go to/reach the green marker. Every google answer is really confusing due to updates, and characters aren't activated even though all side quests in the suggested area are completed. They need to fix this part of the main story/map area issue I think. Festivals aside, im loving the new horse additions and updates and prefer the new SSO than the old one. Excited for stable customization and future surprises they have in store for us

I do agree, I liked running around Cloud Kingdom, even if it was repetitive, it was still enjoyable. And I also liked getting more familiar with Katja. I do hope we see an updated Rainbow Festival or Cloud Kingdom 2.0, but maybe after they focus on some of the other aspects that could be touched, like you mentioned. I do wish it was clearer which side quests unlocked Main Quest content. There are also some quests I think are out of order that should be reconsidered. As for unlocking Epona, I am still trying to do that on my side account - the method changed since I did it on my main. From what I remember, you need to finish the quest with the German Tourist Family in Fort Pinta (theres 3 or 4 parts where you have to find Gretchen, and then you need to solve their dilemma surrounding their summer home, which are Valedale + Firgrove quests) I hope that helps set you in the right direction!

Honestly, I am a new player ( since February ). Except for the short time between the equestrian festival and camp western. There have been constant "festivals" ( and bazaars ) almost purely focussed on making us buy horses. Sso could do with less festivals. (that are actually filled with fun). The rest of the time a focus on quality of life updates and new actual game content would be so mich better.

Welcome!! I totally agree. The short time between the events is actually a little abnormal. Usually we have Spring (April), Rainbow (June), Summer (August), Birthday (September), Fall (October), and Winter (December) Even writing in out like that, it's a LOT! It really does leave little room for much else. The Bazaars are a little extra. They used to happen once a year, but this year we've gotten like 3 or 4 which is wild. But since they mostly offer discounted horses, I can't complain. I think it's an effort to show the community their goals are not the same as they were in 2017ish (no new features/quests, just horses and max shilling clothes/tack to sell) I started playing in 2021 so my view of the game is the after math of that controversy, and I can confirm SSO has made more positive impact than the older player base gives them credit for. Anyway, that last bit is to say I hope you're having fun! I really do love this game so much 💜

i have been playing since 2013, and i completely agree with everything you've said! whenever i say i actually am enjoying aspects of the current game right now, i always face backlash in comments such as 'you're not an old player then', when i definitely am and that has nothing to do with it. as you've said, people need to differentiate nostalgia and the old game being good. it was buggy, there wasn't much to do when quests weren't coming out, we were just younger and had more excitement surrounding the game. the old sso wasn't ever bad, it just also had some of the issues people speak about now! the only grievance i hold is some of the unfinished storylines that had me excited when i was younger, like the GED quests in epona :')

I'm happy to know there are original players who still enjoy the game! I also totally agree!! I want a quest where we oust GED from Epona and clean up the oil field by the racetrack. Also North Link and the 5th hatch door. What are GED hiding? 👀

After playing the new quest today the theory with SSO letting the story coming to an end for this generation of soulriders makes so much sense. I personally have been playing since late 2014, so it's been nearly 10 years. I would love to see some worldbuilding quests, exploring new areas and events without the team having to focus on finding new storylines for the main quest. I mean - there will always be a new generation of Soulriders. We literally CAN'T be the last one, because this kind of circle isn't meant to be broken. This is the way it has always been and how it always will be. Also love your idea of meshing the events. I'm so down for the gay cowboy summer event. Maybe throw in a new gay couple so Maya and Alex are not so lonely anymore 🙈

TOTALLY!! I would love an end to this story to just make the game feel a little more complete. Then the world building comes after. I also love how you put it - there will always be a new generation of Soul Riders. This cycle is technically titled "the last", but it doesn't have to be really. I have a theory about that, too, ready and scripted for a video, I just haven't recorded it yet. Maybe this weekend! Edit to add: GIVE US MARIO + YDRIS!

Mmm, yeah no. I don't know: You lost me at, "Play the old SSO games if you miss the nostalgic SSO so much." The point of old SSO, was the amount of EFFORT that was put into it, the videos, the events, the updates; etc -- everything was to a precise detail, & maybe yeah we were kids, but looking at my old pc, I have videos wishing I could take back certain things, because I took them for granted. Old SSO cared about players, where as now, they are struggling to release an update without bugs, without an event being taken out of the game, without certain graphics being updated & buggy; there is a lot now that you would NEVER see in old SSO: We miss when SSO was excited for players to interact.

  • @UrsulasRevenge

I don't understand how you can see how the game has evolved and say no effort was put into it. It's a completely different game now, for better or worse I'm sure we will disagree, but it's unfair to say no effort was made. These are just my thoughts. Also, you can't deny old SSO was buggy, too. That's why the old events were removed - they were buggy and at times not fun to play (according to actual player insight and data mentioned later in the video, though I doubt you'll care to continue watching and that's fine) I'm not going to change your mind, and that's okay. You're absolutely entitled to how you feel, as I am. I think you've shared an excellent example of how older players might gloss over the unrefined details of the old game when boasting about how much better it was than the current game.

That's the thing - and another point from the video. I don't think it's the majority, it's just the loudest part of the fandom. Being loud doesn't make the majority. Outside of SSO, there are a lot of not so great fandoms, some that just go really hard and in a bad way. It feels like the whole fandom is bad because of how vocal the not great few are. In actuality, it's just a small section giving the whole group a bad reputation. Just because so many of the comments are like yours, doesn't mean it's how everyone feels. As a society, we're conditioned to negativity. We will always speak up when we don't like something, and very rarely do we praise what we do like. I'm not trying to argue with you, you're literally solidifying the points I made in the video.
