Holy shit, I never thought of what it must be like being a big deal athlete, where one simple failure could mean someone you will never meet looses all their money and offs themselves.

Just as one simple failure could result in massive losses for someone betting for you, so too could one good move or a little success result in massive losses for those betting against you. Bets for or against a certain athlete are something these athletes have literally no control over, and I don't fault them for the grim consequences seen in sports betting. Rather, it's the pushers and promotors of gambling who are to blame for getting people hooked on their (often) poisonous practice, and the tragic results.

@@CiggySnake Yeah, they're obviously not at fault, but it's inconceivable what it must be like to be that middleman.
Sports Betting companies should not be able to advertise like they are doing right now. They are preying on weak people and it's not a good look for a modern, sophisticated society. We are devolving.
With how KZread pushes this channel, betting on this channel blowing up is 100:1
Really interesting video! I don’t have a TV subscription, so I didn’t think about the alcohol advertisement rules. But I always see those dang sports betting ads- everywhere I go! Great insight and enough information to make me think about what damage this is causing.
Great vid Ciggy! Had no idea sports betting was illegal until just a few years ago
great video, love how you include your sources. subscribing now and looking forward to more of your stuff!

Thank you for the kind words, I certainly appreciate it.
whatever service is being advertised by that guy in the gold and green cloak, I want in

Great video. Learned a lot as usual.
Great video, those ads are so awful. Perceptions around regulation (and the technology of PR) have changed so much in the last 20 years or so I don't know if there's any political will to reign these companies in. The quotes you highlighted at 7:06 are practically the same lines Google uses when somebody tries to regulate their data collection business and they're going strong, at least in the U.S. If there's any hope, it'll be states regulating betting companies to take a cut of the revenues, just like back in the day. Better than nothing!

Glad you enjoyed the vid man. With Google I think there is a broader distrust of big tech on a grass roots level, whereas some 80% of people are completely fine with sports betting nowadays (up from 46% a few decades ago). Didn't know that about Google, but a billion doar industry playing the "trust me bro" card and politicians being too stupid to look further in is nothing surprising. Also, states have proven to not care that much about regulating sports books and online casinos much, so long as they can tax them. The medium is still fairly new so perhaps they'll be open to shifting their policies once greater research and understanding of sports betting is developed, but still.
Oh yeah I was thinkin about this video and was wondering if horse races were free from these regulations because it seems it's been popular for what seems like ages, but maybe that was in other countries or somethin.
Great vid!

I'm not a big fan of sports personally, but even I find the incessant sports betting advertisement obnoxious and feel it takes away from the "purity" of the medium.

@@CiggySnake to me the biggest issue is with officiating. I'm a big NFL fan and there were a lot of weird calls that impacted games. How do we know those officials didn't have spread bets and were trying to influence the games. I like the Chiefs but the holding call at the end of the Super Bowl was a good example of what I'm saying. I don't think it impacted who won but it could have and how do we know what the officiating crew didn't have bets on the game?

I don't think regulation is the answer. Look how government regulation has made social media even worse

While regulation is no silver bullet, consumer protections are important for, well, protecting consumers from predatory practices and products. Given the sports betting industry is unwilling to self-regulate, I don't think government intervention and regulation is an unreasonable move in this case. Honest question, but what do you believe would be a good solution outside of gov. regulation to curtail the excesses and issues of sports betting?
