My dad was dying of brain cancer and was admitted to the hospital for the last time. He was a HUGE Saints fan. I found out we picked Reggie and I told him holding his hand. He had tubes everywhere but he gave me a smile. That was the last time that I saw him alive. When the Saints won the Super Bowl, I wept. I wish he had made it to see that moment.

For a while the league was about having a single 300 rushes, 1200 yard "Feature Back" that got you 10 touchdowns as a mark of success, just like having a WR1 with 70+ receptions and 1000 yards. It just became the norm in the 90's. It started to change with the Greatest Show On Turf with Faulk first showing you could do both 1k in the air and on the ground from RB, opening up the game for tandem WR, but wear and tear was a huge factor in his effectiveness - so a lot of teams started experimenting to try and find ways to exploit the idea of a receiver out of the backfield in the aggregate. Like the Eagles with Deuce and Buckhalter / Westbrook, or Alstott & Dunn etc. Other players like LTD and Priest Holmes just emphasised the opportunity - and both San Diego and Kansas tried recruiting to offer flexibility with varying degrees of success. Bush was drafted as part of that growing trend of still having a mainstay 1000 yard back (McAllister in his case), but also having a 500 yard rush change of pace back who could also be a 500 yard receiver. But it was still very much a situational substitution (obvious example being like with Dayne & Barber, Lendale White,l). In contrast todays RB's seem much more rounded. They may still have general idea of Thunder / Flash split, but a lot of the time either player in the lineup can play every down.

Yeah, I’m very confused why people act like Reggie was even half as good in the pros as he was in college. Bush never had a 600 yd rushing year his entire career in New Orleans. And with the exception of his rookie year, he never broke 1000 total yards his entire career with New Orleans. It’s not like he sucked. He was a serviceable RB for a pass first team. And if he’d have been drafted in the third or fourth round, I think his stats would have lined up with his pick. He was the number 2 overall pick. And the dude put up average stats at best. He had that one amazing kickoff return though that really blew me away at the time.

Houston drafting Mario Williams over Reggie bush was the best decision they made. Mario was a beast while Reggie didn’t live up to expectations. If Reggie was drafted to the giants or eagles or someone like that his career would have been much better but it is what it is. Point being Houston skipping Reggie for Mario was the right choice

I remember when it was announced we were getting Reggie, me and friends went to celebrate by eating pancakes at the only restaurant open bc New Orleans was still so destroyed by the hurricane. You know, he really shows how much the position changed in just 15-20 years & he was maybe just a hair before his time. Because the narrative early was "he can't run up the gut" but Sean Payton was smart to use him more as a slot playmaker. To his credit he dedicated his whole career to improving as a between the tackles runner & by the time he got to Detroit became an every down back. Had he been drafted today he would've been able to catch passes and run wide nearly full time. I don't think teams would even ask him to change. He didn't play long in New Orleans but is still very respected. He rebuilt the high school football stadium & city track n field which allowed students like me to still run track as seniors in high school. Respect.

And then the factory that the draft also had three quarterbacks that all had first round grades, it’s just amazing how different todays NFL.

Yeah, I remember that draft. The Texans had a QB, so they weren’t going to go for Cutler, Leinart or Young. Bush was the expected pick, but people also weren’t entirely sold on his ability to be a primary back. He was looked at as a guy that could catch the ball, but you couldn’t hand him the ball 20 times a game. In hindsight, the Mario Williams pick was probably the right choice.

Two things are really amazing about Reggie Bush’s career; 1 that he was considered the consensus #1 pick as a small RB in a draft that had a lot of talent. 2 that he wasn’t more effective on the saints with Sean, Payton and Drew Brees playing mostly indoors on the turf. He really should’ve been LT or Marshall Faulk 2.0 or a pre cursor to Christian McCaffrey
