So glad she was free and you took her. She's certainly given me such viewing pleasure these last years

She was free but she's worth the time! Love Lena 🙏♥️
Laughed out loud when you put words in Lena’s mouth telling you, “You suck!” And btw, your videos can’t ever be too long.
The perfect ride, where the two minds meet as one, is exhilarating. The fun is when we're slightly out of sync and how we address it. You show step by step how to adjust the situation but never let frustration warp it. This understanding is so important for any rider and you model it beautifully.

Boy, she really wants to ‘fly’ today !!!
Thank you for showing us both when the horses are doing things perfectly and also when they are not. Today I learned a lot about how to patiently ask what we want and to change plans if needed.

Chilly. Beautiful. Feeding time is their favorite .
Super fun to come along on your morning feeding time! its cool to see how they all hurry with you to the feeding station but give you a respectful berth while you change the bags out.
I would love to have mornings like yours. They're all so good about waiting due to your training. It's a real pleasure to watch someone who has patience and is persistent rather than angry with their horse for having a different idea even when she almost dumped you in the mud. It's another gorgeous day today. Enjoy your day!

Nice to see the gentle consistency of working with Lena. Horses have their own thoughts of where and what they want, and your patience is I’m sure valuable to learning.

Thank you very much! I really was so happy to be able to show what mentally stable horses look like when feeding them. They stay close, wait for me to step back, accept and sometimes welcome a hug or a pat or a rub before I leave and then go eat. I'm so proud of my herd :)
My older “wildy” has begun to rip holes in his hay bags! He makes them 6 inches in diameter, perfect circle for his big ole nose. I don’t think he cares how much they cost 😂

My percheron mare does the same thing. I think the small holes make her frustrated when she cannot get her big old muzzle inside or get a huge clump of hay all at once. I have tried using some bailing twine to weave the holes shut in the hay net. Only thing, I worry my mare may bite it & manage somehow to swallow a piece of twine. Anyone have any other ways to repair the holes?
It's good to see all your horses are respectful of your space. 👍😊 Lena has a lot of energy and is keen to please.🥰
Such energy from the lovely girl!💝
I was surprised to hear that Lena still has some issues. You have such an interesting and diverse collection of horses! Thank you for taking in horses that no one else wants and helping them to reach their full horsey potential. People like you make the world a better place.

I doubt this will ever leave her to be honest. She had it for a good ten years before me. I believe it takes as many years to take something out as it took to put it in.
Thank you for sharing that. I think as humans we all tend to get frustrated easily when our horses have different ideas than us when we go to do training or riding. It was obvious Len was feeling very frustrated but I feel you patience, calmness, and consistency helped the situation.
I love how polite all your horses are, they obviously want the fresh food but because you’ve taught them well to be patient they wait until you say it’s ok :)
We love Zeus... and strong willed Lena 😋
Lena is such a great horse. While she certainly tried to get her will, she didn't endanger you while trying it. At least that what it looked like from chest-view :D It's a great example why you need patience with horses as well and can't just ride them as a hobby when you can only allocate a fixed amount of time with no room for change. As you've put it, she got thoughts of her own, she isn't a machine. If I want to ride something that does exactly what I want and only that I'd ride a motorbike.

That's funny, I had the same thought immediately : "I hope that the person who gave Lena away got a motorcycle instead !" 😅. The thing is that horse riding means 2 living beings together : human + horse, and no, they very often do not agree ! That might be unnerving for some people, scary for others ... and somehow it is understandable. But in that case they are better off with an engine that has no mind of its own !
They are so well behaved for feeding! I love 💕 it!!!
I love Lena 🐎❤. She is such a great and beautiful horse. Thank you for saving her 🥕
She is a good horsey👏 she really wants to canter when asked for trot. She must be very comfy to ride, solid and safe! As to the horsey feeding, thank you 👍 they are so patient. None of them rushed onto the hay, as a result of a full tommy 24h7! Incidently, I watched the video of a passionate old guy having a few BLM mustangs roaming on his property and following him free, wherever he goes, ! The ones he cannot touch, he bumps his head onto theirs at feeding time (is this safe? exposure to bites) to make first contacts because they are afraid of hands.. Hands meaning capture or worst, and bad memories for them.. Mustangs and BC wildies are so intelligent and sensitive creatures that all depends on their first contacts with man and getting their trust to bond with them (with a special thought for Samson whom I never forget whenever I watch Mustangs videos) 🐴🐎 Good to see Zeus😍 is he slimmer?
@StableHorseTraining
Жыл бұрын
It's highly unusual for a horse to bite somebody despite it happening all the time in the classical world of horses where horses hate their owners... I would expect it would work pretty good actually. I always touch heads with Mr. Wilde, he seems to love it... weirdo maybe. I would probably touch with the back of my hand though rather than an open palm reach. They know the difference. Yes, Zeus is on a strict diet, so he's in better shape than before I think. Still a tiny bit plump though.

I think we’ve all ridden a horse with its own “opinions” but like you said don’t lose your patience and end on a good note. Excellent video 🐴
It seems the horses all have at least one thing in common, they like their snacks in the forest. Especially those berry bushes. You certainly have a beautiful place, beautiful skies and beautiful horses. You are blessed. Plus you appreciate it, which makes it even more special.

That was fun to see how your feeding time goes . Because of you , I love my feed bags . The Lena ride was a wonderful lesson time for me. You stayed calm and kept that patient Love with Sweet Lena . Your continually confirming how the same Horse , can behave different sometimes . You help people to not get upset if their Horse is more difficult once in awhile . This is true with Willow . I’m having difficulty leading Her . She is wonderful in every way. But spooky. Which I know is not Her fault . Your help with Bear was fantastic. He is leading great now. Good to know that Lena is safe at your place, safe with a patient and understanding person ! Maybe it would be helpful to do "up" transitions only when you are directed away from "home" and exclusively walk as soon as you are on trails that go back towards "home" ? At least for a while, until she accepts to walk back calm and slow, and not to speed up in any way (not even the walk itself). Second step : accepting your control on gait and speed, allowing for trot even towards "home". Might this be helpful ?

Yes, that it is a good idea to do for sure. I personally find it ends up being that I just delay the inevitable though. Might as well just meet it head on and work hard. I don't suspect I would see the problem if I did it that way and in turn I wouldn't be dealing with the problem at hand.
I love Lena. She was so energetic today!! You know, the way your horses nibble its a wonder you have a forest left at all. 😆 What a wonderful video, explaining your thought process when your training on riding doesn't quite go to plan. Its exceptional to remind everyone that we don't have to force horses into boxes, that we can adjust to what they need rather than what we want. And she got there eventually! She looks like quite a comfy ride. Good job catching yourself! Question: why do you think she was better later in the day? Was she more plugged into you at that time? Had she learned and remembered? Was she less anxious about returning to her friends? I'm never quite sure how much horses retain so Im not sure how much its reasonable to expect them to remember. Thanks for the video!!

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it I think she was better because we made a trip back up to the top to relax a little. A release of tension can sometimes lead to small breakthroughs of problems presented. Sometimes taking a short break can do wonders for a horse's mind so they can get a bit of things their way. At least that's my impression.
I really enjoyed this video. You did a great job preventing her from escalating! Her mind was with you when it was crucial. The chest view camera has a realist view of what a rider can see. It was easy for me to imagine myself on my own horse. I actually got butterflies in my stomach when she wanted to go the other way. Your timing was impressive. There are a lot of great lessons here. Ending calm and positive, not losing your patience..How rewarding and such a thrill to see both of you calm and happy after your ride. Do you get nervous when she wants to argue about where to go?
Happy to see Zeus again! I specially like the morning feeding time when the horses are all chatty. Mr Wilde with his little nicker, that goes straight to the heart! And “chapeau” for how patiently they waited until the hay bag was changed. I wonder if it is more challenging to ride on your trails with all the other horse friends being close, than to be outside when they only have you?

I enjoyed this video. Thx for taking us along. Lena has a special place in my heart, so it was good to see you work with her.
Hi it's Augie from Florida you are amazing. When it's gets cold here it cools down here have a great Canada cool day. Kisses to all the sweet horses and you family + zoos
She's definitely stong minded about what she wants to do, it almost like she was board with going in circles.
I was a little envious of all that fun. 😀
I have same philosophy I don't lunge either unless I think my mare will be too crazy. like 9 out of 10 times I just get on and I love the energy
This video is so helpful. Lena reminds me of the 'free lease' I have at the moment. My good friend was looking for a leaser for her horse and I ended up bonding with the companion horse that's with her horse. I'm still a beginner but rode lots of trails in my teens. I finally got a lessons on this horse. The instructor said she has lots of buttons. Retired rodeo horse. It's a constant battle. This is helpful to know to stay calm and just take time and be patient. I noticed right away how pushy ryley was on the ground. Our relationship has hugely improved. Riding her...she just wants to GO. I can see how Lena's previous owners didn't want to put up with her pushing HER way on a ride. Ps...I know cameras cost money. I suspect Lena had a good crow hop near the end of your last loop on the trail. A well positioned trail camera would of caught that. I would have been in the dirt 😆.
Beautiful Forrest!! That looks like a fun ride on Lena
I bet you're glad to be riding the fab trails that you built and to such good effect. Great lesson all round and thank you so much for the morning feed sequence, lovely. I think you'd enjoy communicating with my horse who is really very similar. 😊

I love these videos, I want to learn as much as I can because I want to have a horse of my own in the future. I feel like I have learnt a lot from you, thank you 😊
I learned SO much about how to reframe horses when they have other plans/motivations when on a ride! I rarely get to ride as I don't have any horses of my own. I love riding, but am always on someone else's horse. As a result, I don't know what habits their horses have. This video was real helpful to me to see not only what "lead-through" horses can be like, but how to help reset and restart with more focus for the horse. It's obviously a long term work in progress, but also every step taken to refocus ads up. It's crucial to have clear communication between both the horse and rider. On that note, I kinda know what to with my legs when riding, to "ask" the horse. I had a good friend with horses ride with me and educate me on the lower body language a bit. This may be a topic for another video, but can you please explain the movements of your torso and legs to communicate with the horse? The chest cam is super for upper perspective, but I feel I am missing half of the story in your rider to horse communication. Can you explain or show exactly what you're doing (i.e. tapping your heels, leaning in a certain direction, squeezing thighs, etc.)? Thanks for these fantastic educational videos and sharing time with your horses and your knowledge!

By the way, I know videos are not the same as real life experiences, but I now feel like I have a foundational guide for the next time I ride/engage with horses. I'm unsure of why you hope that I would give her a chance to run, she was quite unsafe at a trot and the limitation I placed on her was for my personal safety. Perhaps you misunderstood why she wanted to go fast, in such a case I'd encourage you to watch again and realize that while she had a lot of energy (naturally all horses should), it primarily came from her worry and anxiety. So... to equate the idea of having a chance to really run would mean I would have to put even more worry in her or not try to contain it and in turn put myself in danger.

No worries, just wasn't sure if I wasn't clear on why she had such energy. I think it's important to be able to discern the difference and when it becomes unsafe. There are times when she is connected well and goes along nicely too, today wasn't that day :)

My question for you is she seems to have a lot of energy. Any particular reason you didn’t allow her to burn off some of that energy? Or are horses like dogs in the sense that when you address the mind, it burns more energy then physical movement?
@StableHorseTraining
Жыл бұрын
It's a good question. I have some questions back then that will help you sort out the answer as to why I did what I did. First is, what is energy? As in, when a being has "energy" why is it there? Second is, how do you believe I could have worked off that particular energy (you have to find the answer to the first question to answer the second). Third is, if I was able to "burn off" that energy, to what benefit would it be for the training and education of Lena while being ridden? Could there have been a better/different method than what I was doing?
A wonderful lesson on patience and determination. But I don't think Lena thought you stubborn, I think she thought you a pest ... 😁
