The Reality Of Living This Far North

Join us for a glimpse of the day to day challenges we have to face living in the north of Sweden with an Arctic climate. From extreme low temperatures down to -40 Celsius and ridiculous amounts of snow blocking the road to our cabin. Life up here is definitely interesting!

In The Service I operated in some very difficult areas around the world that all required different skills etc. For my last tour I was an instructor on The Joint School of Combat Survival. In my spare time I enjoyed Alpine Climbing. I lived in Norway for a number of years and visit regularly. In England I was a Mountain Rescue Team Member. So I have been very fortunate to have experienced, worked and enjoyed a wide range of weather conditions. Desert, Jungle, Temperate and Arctic can all be utterly brutal. IMO, however, anyone can live and enjoy any environment, people have been doing so for millennia. It requires some knowledge of course and the right clothing and shelter. But I think the main requirement is attitude and a willing to adapt to Mother Nature. You 2 are doing just that 😊

I agree, you can live virtually anywhere (probably wouldn't be much fun on the tip of Everest) if you have the right mind for it. Embracing the elements, not fighting them. I honestly love it here, every month has its own character

Great video thanks for sharing. Reminds me of the winters we had when I was a little boy growing up on an old farm in the countryside outside Sundsvall. Here is Uppsala we don’t get winters like yours anymore. I miss them. Nice to see you can enjoy everything they offer. From the beauty to the rough and savage as you say.

As good as it looks, I couldn't hack these temperatures due to my health. This past week, i was scraping ice off the windscreen with minus 7 degrees and my fingers just froze. The worse part was that once i warmed up, my chest felt raw with lots of coughing. I would like to but it would kill me. Enjoy the beauty of it because you have good health.

Yes, that kind of weather can take us out quick when we get older, if we aren't careful. I do love the snow but I fear falling on the ice these days, instead of enjoying it like I used to.

Have you considered a covered walkway between your buildings so that you don't need to shovel as much? Wouldn't be a huge project but would be useful in the winter. You could even make zip off walls to limit the snow drifting.

Well, it's not dark there, but it certainly is cold..., most people can't even beginn to imagine what -23 feels like. I think my maximum experience of Cold was a -18 here in Switzerland, but I don't go looking for it. That was a lot damper cold, than the dry cold you have in Sweden. I'm sure dry cold would suit me better and therefore would, or at least I should get up north one day to see if my senses experience your cold the same way as you do. Just realised, wether it's chopping wood, or shovelling snow, you have your year-round workouts and can save on Gym subscriptions. Is that Barn in the field behind the trees, also yours, and empty, or have you neighbours? As per usual, a fantastic video, thanks.

I live in Stockholm and we have the sea all around us. Stockholm is located on 7 islands. And ive been to gällivare and kalix. My entire family is from there. The coldest ive been is in stockholm, there have been colder tempatures in the north. Really cold. But it stays outside your clothes. In Stockholm the cold is moist, damper. It just seeps into under your clothes and freezes your whole body. I had a conversation with a few coworkers who fly in to work in the tunnel constructions under Stockholm. He said going out in his underwear in -20 to pick up the mail in the dry north, was easier than having proper clothes in -2 windy/damp Stockholm
