Life at sea can be both exciting and dangerous. The open sea can offer a sense of freedom, adventure, and excitement that many of us crave. However, the reality of life at sea without doctors can be quite different from what we see in movies and books. In this video, we will explore the dangers of life at sea and how it can affect the health and wellbeing of sailors on a merchant navy ship.
One of the biggest challenges of life at sea is the lack of medical facilities and personnel. Unlike on land, there are no hospitals or clinics readily available in case of a medical emergency. If a sailor falls sick or gets injured, they have to rely on their own knowledge and resources to provide basic medical care. In such situations, even minor injuries or illnesses can quickly escalate into life-threatening situations.
If you are considering a career at sea or are simply interested in knowing more about life at sea, this video is a must-watch. We will provide you with valuable insights into the realities of life at sea without doctors and help you understand the challenges that sailors face every day

The best advantage of KSN channel videos is it's not only informative and educative for the marine people but also because of its simple language and exhaustive coverage gives a virtual tour with easy to understand language. I never feel like in the class taking lectures rather watching a documentary movie with a cup of tea. And most important - while we watch this seating with our family, they are struggling for life in the rough sea Thank you KCN

Great information and in good in depth knowledge. On cruise ships I occasionally see passengers leaving by pilot or Coast guard boats after illnesses. Never nice to see but good to know you have some training just in case.
I remember that the Ships Captains Medical Guide was mainly illustrated with black and white photographs. The only section with colour photographs was that which concerned venereal diseases . Do not open it at these pages and place it on the mess table whilst your shipmates are eating, it may cause indigestion and nausea, personally I found it to be a great ice breaker for a junior deckhand newly arrived. The looks of shock and horror on their faces was a joy to see, rapidly followed by a dash to the heads and the sound of vomiting. Not seasickness, we were still alongside.

@@KaranvirSinghNayyar The Ships Captains Medical Guide carries in the pages at the back a list of funeral services for all the world's major religions in the sad event that someone dies and it is impractical to reach shore for a normal funeral. On a happier note it also gives advice on how to deliver a baby.

Thank you so much for this post. I found this episode really interesting. A long long time ago, I was trying to obtain a position with the US Sealift command (a civilian branch of the US navy). Because I was already a Registered Nurse, I qualify as M.S.O. (medical service officer) with the US Coast Guard. Unfortunately, at the time the US merchant fleet was downsizing. Now positions were non-existent. Guess part of the reason for a small US merchant fleet is the regulation. Not sure, but I believe any US flag merchant ship is required to have an MSO with more than 12 crew. Please keep your post coming. It was my dream to be a merchant seaman. Living vicariously thru your post.

My uncle was a Navy Flight surgeon who rarely went to sea. Now, I understand what he did. He was the guy who communicated with the ship. Larger ships like aircraft carriers and distroyers have doctors on board. Shore personnel like my uncle have to serve on a ship early on so that they know what's going on there.

Hi K, Absolutely great to hear and see what the medical training entails onboard. Very similar to aviation, however we are also trained in full CPR and the use of defibrillator in case of heart attack patients. We also have a doctor available 24/7 based in the USA who can be contacted by us anywhere in the world and at any point in flight by radio. Obviously everyone hopes that the training will never be needed but it's good to know it's there and can be used in civilian life too. You did a great job with the video and explanations, well done and keep the vids coming, it's great to watch you.

Hey Karan, I m so happy to gain more and more knowledge from you. But i have following questions 1. What if any crew had already got a medical degree before joining the ship? Will he be able to prescribe the medicine? 2. Is it allowed to take homoeopathic or ayurvedic medicines on board or does that need a prescription?
