The REALITY of being the NUMBER 1 PICK in the AFL
The last few number one picks are tracking well. It has made us all forget about the pressure of being selected first overall and the problems that can come when expectation isn't met. The reality through the AFL's history points towards the pick not being as valuable as it seems.

Boo. You shouldn't even have left a comment. This comment section is worse for you even entering it. We should trade your comment while it still has value and sack the content creator...... BOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@@el-violador yeah, I was a bit overhyped. Early second round comment at best.

@@HorizonOfHope ah it's ok. We'll put you in defence and see what happens
I think if you take a player like Swallow with the number 1 pick, you’d be pretty happy. Has been one of the Suns’ better and most consistent mids for the majority of his career.
For such a small KZread channel, your content is elite and well researched. Love listening to these videos, and the recognition will eventually come when afl KZread starts picking up

Appreciate it
You shoud do a video on the biggest underdog wins. So when teams have crazy odds and win
Great content dude! Worth noting as well; by all means Jesse Hogan would've also been a first round pick on that goalkicking list, if the mini expansion draft wasn't a thing that year.
its hard for number 1 pick key forwards. Normally they go into the worst team in the comp, likely with not much help up forward, get smashed by two defenders because theres no one else to kick to and lose by 10 goals. GWS have been really smart with Cadman, he's clearly talanted as all hell but if hogans out is kind of just him up there. Logan Morris has had the best first 8 games ive seen from a key forward, but hes a third tall and is very good on the ground level. Other than his first game he's kicked 2-3 goals a game. I think the reason why he's gone so well (other than his skills and work ethic) is because of the established pillars aorund him taking a bit of the attention. Chucking a pick 1 key forward in on their own could be confidence ruining in the first season
Great video! I would say that Andy Mcgrath hasn't lived up to hype as he is essentially a back pocket at this stage. Especially when compared to Tom Scully who is considered an underperformer, but was still selected in a few 40 man All Australians before final selections. This is coming from a dees fan who would obviously look for reasons to disregard Scully 😂

Yeh I can how Mcgrath is a bit 50/50. Was going nowhere for a bit but since 2023 has been one of the better small defenders in the comp.
There is also that most of the time, you're walking into the worst club in the league. Especially hard for key positions when you're not getting the ball service. If you're rebuilding you also have less experience around you. It's a tough gig being the number one pick
I think Harley Reids impact will reignite the saviour complex that the number 1 pick used to have unfortunately…
Great vid keep up the good work

Thanks
Sometimes the player taken pick 1 isnt the best player but taken for need. McCartin was never worthy of pick 1 but because Petracca had an ACL he was selected. The only reason saints selected McCartain was to replace Reiwoldt. Cadman is in the same boat. He was rated behind Ashcroft, Wardlaw, Sheezel and occasionally Tsatas. Giants took him because they needed a new key forward after Cameron left for Geelong. 2021 was very close between Daicos and JHF but because Collingwood would get Daicos regardless north wanted to make JHF feel wanted and not as a left over player (didn't work out well).

Yeah people do forget about the pick 1 father sons, next year will likely be the same with Levi Ashcroft. Theres no point in ruining the headline of taking a player at pick 1 that goes to another team, because it then becomes their pick 1 story. In reality the pick number doesnt matter much, players like Logan Morris this year are kinda showing it

@@Tosicc567 Yeah it's true that the pick doessn't matter too much. Obviously it still does have an effect tho. With this year id actually argue to opposite with Harley Reid being potentially the most damaging (and possibly best) pick 1 in their debut season

@@harejam9528 Yeah ofc the pick means a lot in terms of tallent, but its all how you treat the player. The eagles have had the perfect approach the Reid, really supporting him and giving him a break at times to build fitness and not rest the entire club on him. I always look at how the good clubs treat their draftees. Some just hit the lottery like brisbane seems to with players like Darcy Wilmot and Logan Morris. Rayner has done an acl but he's pretty much always a best 22 player. Clearly hasnt hit the strides you would like him to though but he shows up at times and blows people away. Check the qualy final against port, he was just unstoppable
Paddy McCartin was a terrible draft pick for us
Being Pick 1 doesnt matter most of the great players of our games history are the lowest picks.
