Like there was something else going on… BESIDES the actual face mask… Which - if you look at the NFL’s statement it released on its website at the time - seems all the more realistic.
Check out this excerpt from the memo: “A study conducted by the University of New Hampshire for the NFL states that the added weight of the masks negatively affects the structure of the helmet, can cause neck fatigue that could lead to a more head-down posture during contact and can provide a false sense of security during tackling.”
Today we present, The REAL REASON that the NFL Banned Customized Face Masks.

I wore one through all of highschool, I played OL/DL. It did add a lot more weight. It was actually a lot heavier then a helmet with a “regular” face mask. But it did help a lot from people shoving fingers in the helmet to jab at eyes nose and mouth. Or punching inside the mask when coming out of yoir stance. But I did see a TE go to stiff arm our outside linebacker with the same face mask as me and he broke his finger and ended up having to amputate the tip end of his pinky due to it being broke and messing with ligaments. I think pros definitely out way the cons but that’s coming from 18 year old kid. I’m sure the NFLs scientist have a lot more qualified and more intelligent reasoning for the ban than I could understand lol.

The extremely tight facemasks seemed like the perfect remedy to actual facemask penalties...because you can't get fingers in between the bars. Lots fewer infractions, player's safety is better....so yep, $$$ is the motivation, not safety.

At the time these masks were popular we contacted the small company that was originally making them out of their barn. They exploded in popularity when Tuck and others started wearing the mask. They opened a manufacturing warehouse and were on back order for months. The owner of this company said Riddle got involved because they were the exclusive NFL helmet provider at the time. Because it wasn’t their face masks they said it made the helmets unsafe. It was all about money in the end that banned them from my understanding.

The extra weight issue is real. In auto racing they are constantly searching for materials that are lighter yet provide the same, or better protection for helmets. Once the head starts moving, the lighter the helmet, the less momentum. The less momentum, the less it force on the neck at the full extention.

Maybe I'm missing something, but here's my thing: Ostensibly, the harsh penalties for facemasking an opponent during a tackle are for the players' safety, because the facemask grab will torque their neck and cause injuries. If you make a facemask with gaps smaller than fingers, then it makes it much much harder to facemask someone. Instead of making a rule to penalize it even if it's accidental, why not just make it almost impossible to do?

Highschool i had an old helmet of that style. And i mean old. And ya i was a dt and looked mean. But it also popped the nerve in the back of my neck when i got drilled by rbs. Now i am sure the nfl masks were lighter and easier. Feels like short term research. But there was science behind it. But the helmet parts have improved so much, wish it would come back love the look

Thinking on it a bit - the NFL is just about turning this into a flag football league in the name of safety but won't allow these changes which make both the fans and the players happy... All the while throwing out (or perhaps up) the bizarre alternative uniforms onto the field pleasing no one but Riddel...
