Resleave it and rebuild it to spec. Video the rebuild in detail and market the workshop and suppliers who do the work, then auction / raffle the engine to cover your costs. Plenty of young fellas would like the insight / knowledge

That's why we love this channel because Tyler runs to the controversy not away from it..shoulda bought a Toyota
Rebuild it. It's always handy to have a spare TD42 that you know is good. Besides, I'm sure you're considering geting another Patrol to build like Timmy's rig in Tassie. W/a good TD42 motor already at hand, you can look for one that has a blown engine or a very high mileage to save on the purchase price. Plus it's more content for your channel. Win-Win 👍

Good point. Someone else mentioned diesel swapping the GU which is also a good idea
Got to feel better you’ve got answers now, nothing worse than wondering if it’s something you’ve done and when is it going to happen again. Thanks for sharing the learnings too, I’m sure lots of us got to see parts of an engine we haven’t before, your explanations and capture makes it easier to put it into perspective and understand things better. Thanks mate, great video.

Thanks mate!
cool video I'm guessing that crate motor will give you many years of joy with no problems. The new crate motor is definitely the way to go, hope Nissan keep producing them....
Sold a lot of TD 42 engine parts 90% of the dead engines were from over boosting and trying to get too much hp out of these old engines. Stick to max 15 psi. 10 psi boost and they will last even with std pistons. Want more power go for a Cummings 4.5 lt where you can get 700 nm torque out of the box and the engine is built to last in trucks and busses
I’m keen to see a rebuild on the td42
Having stripped and cleaned 100s of these engines thier biggest issue is the steam holes that run horizontal between the bores and diagonally to the deck, these holes block up then crack the counter bore under the sleeves about two inches down the bore, you will see hot spots on the sleeve, fix is bore out the counter bore and fit thicker sleeves, and drill the gunk out of the steam holes, need about a 100mm long 3mm drill bit
There's a few getting around with Ford Barra engines in them. Then you got to get them engineered. The Aussie built Ford straight 6 is almost unbreakable. And parts are available in every part of the world should say Australia
The grease monkey goes alright But has got a head for radio
Great vid TT. Being an engineer, I really enjoyed this one. Engine forensics is always fascinating.
Definitely an unfortunate situation having to swap engines a few times but I don’t think it’s Burdos tune at all, engine sitting for years then sparked back to life not knowing it’s history if its been dusted or what ever, that a big chance that sometimes doesn’t pull off, great video mate, cheers

Looks like it probably did a head gasket at some point with new gasket and new head bolts. Would explain the potential water in those cylinders as well. And since tds are called the kettle makes a lot of sense
Built TD42, stroker or Stock length stroke with the works. Either sell it off find or something to put it in As for the oil burner factory turbo motor my guess is it's sat with an intake open on one cylinder and exhaust valve on the other or something similiar like Nick mentioned The poor silvertop probably had bugger all ring tension left so the boost and fuel probably just went straight through to the sump 😂
TB out .. rebuilt TD in.. GU will love ya for it 🤙🏼🥴

I'm glad you solved the problem. It would've done my head in not knowing what it was. Happy motoring mate 👍 🐕🤠
If you're not going to rebuild it, you could keep many of the parts as spares. Not that you'll most likely need them in the near future, considering you've just fitted a new crate motor. But knowing you, you might buy another project Patrol - to chop into a dedicated rock crawling, terrain taming, bog bashing rig. So it could serve as parts for it. 😁
@HammerRocks

Haha. Yeah, my thougths exactly. I bet he's already planning to build a chopped Patrol like Tim's in Tassie. 😁
My bet is it had two oversized injectors in 3 and 4. Overfuelled and run hot on those two pots. When the oil burning reached where it did, the owner parked it. It's not from dusting or water, the firing order means fuel/air is fed to all cylinders more or less evenly, never all the mix to 3 and 4 only.
May aswell bore it out with oversize piston and rings if the bore is fucked then Stroker crank and blueprint it. Be good months worth of content and valuable spare or ready for another car.
i had a parado that was burning oil by the time i had done 5000klm i was told to switch to full synthetic and i never had to add oil between oil changes of 25000klms annually

rebuild and show us how it’s done. i loved this video and learnt a lot even tho i am an apprentice mechanic we don’t rebuild engines so learnt a lot and want to rebuild my prado engine one day as got a few clicks in her
Ud engine in my 1990 truck did over 800.k carting steel products oil change every 10k not pampered. Great engines
I can just imagine Burto saying 'mate if you want more inches stroke it' Yes you should stroke that engine, how cool would that sound 😄 I think you just got unlucky, I've been there with used engines more than once. Not a mechanic but I'd hazard a guess that it had been over heated at some point with the two inner cylinders having the problem and the fact the cooling system was immaculately clean. I'd also guess the knocking noise was piston slap.
Brand new blocks are 2700 from Deisel Central, could possibly get 12k for them rebuilt
damn you got some good friends,, i do it all myself.. with no camera.. just gets in the way..
When they said they couldn't find anything wrong I instantly thought dusted Especially 3/4 piston direct inline with the inlet

Yup agree..same happened to me with a different engine when the filter element inverted on Simpson tk. Also wonder if poor service and blocked squirters too.
Rebuild the TB42 bro and nice work 👍
Thanks for the share 🤙
I have a tray for my engine stand. Even when you drain everything out of it they still dribble shit when you turn them over.
very interesting - great video
My son has had two engines a few gear boxes, in the middle now of changing his diffs to the GU, eventually will be fixed. Now you have diagnosed the problem and taken apart rebuild it and sell it. Keep up the good work.
Push the sleeves out and look for horizontal cracks about two inches down the bore
Does the other bloke have a youtube channel like how he explains every thing. The bloke that disassemble most of the engine.
Check the valves for burnt on crud on those cylinders
That comment at 17:50 Surely thats not right. Surely there is a reliable threshold of power with an na that has a turbo on it. Anyone have an idea?
Stroker TD!
Berto tuned it 6 years ago thats why it crapped out and was left for 5 years lol
The guys from skid factory just recently rebuild a td42 tyler,i'd say put the old engine in a comp truck, more content for viewers
The TD42 is Nissan’s version of a 1HZ turbo. Change my mind
God damn I love the aussie accent! If I wasnt assuie myself id have fuck all idea what the fella with the mohawk was saying at some moments. Great content, hilarious duo
That thing on top won’t help. Heat soak 100% and next to useless. Cook it up however you want I’ve done it and fmic is essential for turbo and engine reliability long term
I would say that had a rusty ball when sitting then when started driving that’s why that ball ended up stuffed that Mounkten would’ve been open to the air or moisture
I build my own stroker engines, I don’t trust any one else to do it properly! Both my engines are running like a freight train, they don’t burn any oil!
Just bash the liners in and out yourself, my TD munched an intake valve seat and 3 of the liners were so worn the bore gauge didn't register on the setting I had it on, lol
Its coz it wasnt a 3.2 mega donk from a ranger... thts your problem.
Put a TB48 please hahaha
You should rebuild the motor the way you drive to much right boot 👢 cheers legends ☺️
Sorry to call the guys on this BUT liner projection/protrusion can change over time (wear out) it’s called a dropped liner. Rare that it happens but it can happen.
Rebuild it to be bullet proof and push the max power out of it
It’s better to set individual cylinders at top dead centre compression, valve clearance.
i had a hq holden that the con rod snapped in half and then it punched a hole in the side of the block
Talk to Curry Bros at Taree.. TD gurus and good blokes!
I think just sell everything together don’t part it out because someone will want a half decent turbo motor to rebuild for their needs, you don’t a spare unless you dust it or drown it.
Stroker be a good project grind the cam
I kinda wanna see if the first motor ripped apart!
3&4 indicates dirt dust ingestion, poor air filtration, nicicile liners don’t wear like that unless there’s abrasion. Use heavy duty liners from Engines Australia, they are thicker. What air filter are you running?

G'Day..Hmmmm..wonders cheap linners and has hard spots,in the finish, reckon the dirt theory may be,,but hard spots in cast linners,,Not so much engines but have seen this in hydralic cylinders, and not barrell but piston,,chewed them up real quick,, but looking inside beatufull.(NOT)the only way to tell is too measure,,
The explanation about sucking dirt/ grit into pots 3 and 4 makes sense if it had been ru without an air filter. To back your claim I had a guy running a td42 without an air filter and thought driving through water was a good idea. No it wasn't pots 3 and 4 sucked a bucket load of water bent the Conrad's in both pots and how it didn't throw a leg out of bed I don't know. Pots 1,2,5,6 all OK, like yours.
Demi has shown some interest in the mechanical side of things. What about getting her to rebuild it under some instruction from those in the know. Auction it, sell it or keep it as a spare. Got lots of options and content.
@Karakaboardriders

That’s a cool idea but have her do the bulk of the work could be a little side story to trip storys
When are you coming to newcastle ?
my two bob's worth.. buy an engine rebuild kit and rebuild it yourself.. obviously you'll need to get the head and re-sleeve done by the experts but the rest you can do in your garage.. the experience and knowledge gain will be invaluable.. then you can sell, or competition give away ?, the engine..
Your channel is basically a lesson on buying Nissan's
If you have a 12 Mil pump, chuck it away it's gotta be the tune to much fuel explain why a brand new td42t did the same 🤔🤔

Put a 265 hemi in it

They grab pistons like going out of fashion You guys are wizards 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🥱
Im not far from you. Happy to take the old engine off your hands.
Hey l am no expert but you guys appear to know what you's are on about, but l do know that old Nissans make good scrap metal and sadly, this includes Safari/Patrols. But in saying that, any engine that has been sitting a long time will be suffering from bore corrosion,,,,,, especially if a valve is open or even partially open.
Dont think I've heard so much guessing in one clip 😂😂😂😂 Heres the plot, with the centre 2 cylinders the dust has so much energy it doesn't turn in the manifold enough to get to 1&2 then 5&6 as much as 3&4 which is more line of sight, then as you can see with the excessive carbon build up the reduced ring land dia above the piston which is designed that way so carbon build up doesn't polish the bore, this has gotten to the point where its exceeded the ability to keep away from cylinder walls and has been amplified by dust into 3&4 then the bore scuffing is the result, in motors designed for 1M plus kms they have flame rings at top liners to constantly clean top ring land, bad tune up only magnifies the issue with excessive carbon from the soot of overfuelling and excessive injection duration, i bet if you had looked closely at induction piping you would see evidence of dust ingress, if there is a leak point ( including poor maintenance practice of not changing airfilters) then you know where new one is headed, if your operating in dusty areas then 2 things, regularly pull of intake to turbo and look for dust evidence, this will be either staining and or abrading of leading edges of compressor wheel, be sure to silastic over the top of every joint between turbo and air filter ( on the outside not between as it seal's just as well but much easier to take apart, a little rubber grease on air filter sealing surfaces works wonders too, if your really serious about getting good life out of new motor then at least for a couple of oil changes cough up for some oil sample kits and dont "guess" any more make sure you know its all going good, JMHO as working on 2000+ hp diesels in mining this is absolutely mandatory for 35 - 40,000 hrs of engine life, Thats not even taking into account correct engine oils and intervals where overfueling and soot contamination are contributing factors etc etc etc.
You've come a long way since teaching but you'll learn
I reckon it got some ginger whiskers sucked into it😂😂
i would love to see a show where a stock td42 goes up against a modified td42 , people forget patrols and cruisers are not performance vehicles never meant to be modifed to the extent they are ! its all just a boys pissing contest ! i am only referring to engine mods .
Rebuild to higher spec 🤔👍
Its all about luck with engines, TDs in general 😂
rebuild and sell to get back some money on the crate motor.
Warped intake manifold?
Rebuild it then give it away

They are not problematic naturally. Problem is. People don't just leave them. How they are. Only reason why the land cruiser have gained such a rep for being reliable is because everyone who bought them just left them na and were happy. Everyone nowadays wants big power outta these things. Same thing with the 1hz's. You turbo them and start chasing power they start having issues. You leave a Toyota motor out in a paddock open to the elements for 5 years and the same thing will happen. It's just user error.

Just luck of the draw with second hand motors unfortunately!
This is exactly the reason I bought a Jeep. Got it used with low kms, the reliable naturally aspirated 3.6, minimal mods to get big tires on it, can drive it for 200k then sell it and buy another one. I would only buy an old patrol or landcruiser if I was a mechanic by trade because labour is too expensive for me.
Motors are electric, what you have there is an engine 😎
