I lived in Vegas for 7 years and everyone in my circle of friends had a gambling problem. I've never really found it to be super enticing, but I did enjoy playing poker every once in a while. If you can lose a couple of bucks and just consider it entertainment, that works if it's not taking food off your table. Once you start chasing losses to get back to even is when you really get hosed. I had a friend who threw $100 into the Playboy machine at the Hard Rock and hit it for $16k. By the time he left a few hours later he had given it all back plus a few grand out of pocket.

Thanks for this comment, because this really shows how well they distort our sense of value in money if you volunteer to be in their clutches. It's the same thing with things like credit cards, time shares, heck even insurance convinces us they all offer a service in our benefit when the insurance actually obscures our sense of value in healthcare or repairs and lowers our chances of looking at the true cost of who is scamming who

One more thing about the design. You must always go through gambling machines, tables, and restaurants in order to exit, or get to costumer service, or the exchange. Pulling on your impulse to play.

I figured the carpets are a busy pattern to hide stains from spilled drinks. I don't find them ugly...just interesting and colorful. And we are in the casinos because we love to gamble and we know what we're there for!

Same! I don't think they're ugly at All..almost psychedelic and mesmerizing. A blank/solid color carpet...that would make me look up. Something about the carpet hypnotizing me maybe engages the escapist part of the brain. Helps lock the brain into another world, kinda like the no clocks and windows thing

I think the game with the best odds (if played correctly) is Video Poker. Find the right machine (9/6 payouts), and memorize/play the correct hands (learn the best hands to hold), and you will do best in the long run over slots or game tables.

Speaking of law of large numbers, 50-50 does not guarantee you a win. Suppose you bet on heads in a coin toss, tossing 20 times does not mean you will get 10 heads even on a fair coin. Tossing perhaps 10,000 times or more gets you close to a 50/50 probability or a 50% chance of winning. But roulette is NOT 50/50. It is 18/38 or 9/19 because you only have 18 out of 38 slots of winning whether you choose red or black.

Video Poker is also a great game to play with a very low house edge depending on the paybacks

I can't believe that you didn't know that slots were the biggest earners for casinos, it stands to reason, everything in the casino requires a service which has to be paid for, except slots. They are just boxes with lights and sounds and require only the player to operate, therefore no other service required.

NO clocks? Takes me about ten minutes to lose my money. I dont need a clock. There are more grumpy people leaving vegas than coming. Go to the airport sometime. You will see. Weak souls cant resist the lights and the enticements. It is a good place to watch a fight or go to a concert but it is not a money making adventure, that is for sure.
