When I moved to America from Africa many years ago my personal weakness did not disappear, i had to work on them,. I am back in Africa and whatever issues I had in America have followed me. The one thing you cannot ran away from is yourself. Personal issue are not going to melt away by moving from America to Africa. Africa provide more opportunities but in the beginning you need to low your expectation and do away with some conveniences and luxury

Even more is the dissemination of mom and pop business in the west, the big box, aka Walmart and Amazon monopoly give a hustler zero chance to compete. American middle class is on decline while Africa is going up. How many people own land and business in US, majority of Americans depend on biweekly income check and have an average of 20 bills to pay every month. I have business in both US and Kenya and plan to open something in TZ soon.

The first thing less regulations i Africa, you need less capital to start, is a virgin land meaning you face less capital. you have less old industries tring to block you, eg if you want to start renewable energy in US you will get resistance from fossil fuel industry. Herbal medicine will get resistance from pharmaceutical industry. Monopoly in US has destroyed mom and pop companies, is easy to start pharmacy store, medical clinic, community bank. In USA you have to compete with amazon, walmart, CVC, Advocate medical group Walgreen, Chase, PJ Morgan and Bank of America. I could go on and on

The USA economical growth is 2% in 2023 and dropping 1.7& in 2004 and the top 11 African countries projected to experience strong economic performance forecast are Niger (11.2%), Senegal (8.2%), Libya (7.9%), Rwanda (7.2%), Cote d’Ivoire (6.8%), Ethiopia (6.7%), Benin (6.4%), Djibouti (6.2%), Tanzania (6.1%), Togo (6%), and Uganda at 6%.

I recall one diasporan youtuber decrying the fact there wasn't the usual fast food chains in the country she had moved to with her husband and young son. I pointed out that the food was fresh and healthier. She responded by saying she didn't want people like me on her channel 😂. I wonder where they are now?

Not leaving America, i love it here and certainly not going to Africa to live, a vacation probably but to live? NO.

I tried to immigrate to NZ years ago and it took me 2 years to get ALL the documentation together and in the end it was a failure when I couldn't secure a job (the credit crash JUST happened), then lived in Dubai for 10 years....admin as a expat is frustrating wherever you go. You gave really sound advice, patience is a MUST!!! Everyone's experience is different,, but patience is a virtue!

Going there as a visitor is completely different from permently living there permanently

Truth be told, there is no UTOPIA, whether in Africa or the USA. You have to have goals before you move and you have to be committed. Many Europeans are leaving Europe because of various reasons such as stress and quality of life. I live in New England and although unemployment is low, many people don't want to commit to a 9-5, especially after experiencing the flexibility of employment during COVID. I know people who believe that life should be much cheaper in Africa. Africans go all over the world to study, they have to learn new languages and put up with racial abuse (China, Russia, etc) but they stick to it because they focus on their goals. Even in the USA, Africans are not welcomed with open hands by people who look like them. Even in black churches, it takes a long time for Africans to be accepted. This is first-hand experience. Maybe Africans who moved to the USA should talk about their experiences in the USA.

I think that’s the biggest point there is no utopia. One thing we as African Americans need to learn we are not from Africa. It’s a big difference in the culture we are use to here in America. I think many blacks think just because Africa is a black continent that means you will get so much love there. People there are the same as people anywhere. Their only concern is helping their circle.

I agree with your assessment. While we enjoy SA, we love living in Kenya. You should go wherever you are led. If you can, spend a month or two in each area and try to get a feel for different neighborhoods and what local living could be like for you and your family. Concerning mental health, we recognize that many transition physically but not mentally. They try to move forward with their focus on what's in the rear view mirror vs the potentials and pitfalls that are visible when focusing forward. We seen some youth that struggled trying to acclimate while dealing with puberty. In most of these cases, the parents thought about "safe and peaceful areas" but not about the social fit for kids. Others come with the ptsd type symptoms and behaviors linked to their personal "black American experience" and shared community trauma. Mental health services could benefit so many in their first couple years after transition. The guilt from missing family events, the passing of family members, the grief of other types of loss (of community, certain relationship experiences), etc. This is just my opinion after having been on the continent for a few years and seeing what we have seen. Any way. Grace & peace.

That's why we should go as a group instead of individually when moving abroad. We should pool our resources together. Look out for each other and support one another. We don't believe in working as one like other groups, so it could certainly be more of a challenge for us as expats, compared to others.

AAs' romanticize the idea of living in Africa, but will have great difficulty adapting to living there because we have no culture or community that fully accepts our presence. Now you feel left out, depressed, questioning whether moving there was the right decision etc. So, they wind up leaving and going back to what they know. My suggestion, SEEK YAH FIRST,.because without a plan and purpose it's gonna fail. He has the plans and purpose for all of our lives. Seek him for the answer.

As an African who has travelled. There is the same treatment by AAs when we come to America. However it is not about accepting you! It is about not being able to assimilate to the local culture. No one has to accept you. Even I as am African when we first went to SA and Botswana we weren't accepted. Until you assimilate and respect the ideals of those places you'll always be left out. That is the reality of being a foreigner. I'm constantly told to go back to Africa and all that even when I'm just here to try and get ahead for my kids etc. This is the reality of being an immigrant. Constant rejection and backlash.

My advice. Get with locals, not in love as a tourist 8n the big cities. Live outside, learn the language, visit and adopt a village family( as one of them..mainly a father and a mother). Form a small biz, gift shop. Poultry farm, hire locals to sell street food for you. Do not spend too much time on amenities/ convenience, only comfort. Stop complaining, do not compare American system. This is a different culture. Be prepare !!!. BLESSED is thy WOMB Mama Africa. KLA BE BE ' most Africans that go to America, patiently spend/ plan 3. 5. 7 yrs without proper legal status, before they succeed. Do not take a microwave, snap my finger attitude to Africa..Be patient !!!

Skills aren't enough on the continent. African countries want to first employ their own citizens before they employ outsiders. It doesn't matter if their skin has melanin. You have to come with the intentions to build businesses where you can employee the community. That's why African countries are allowing the Chinese, Lebanese, Indians and other groups to come in and gain access. That's how economies are stimulated.

I am African and even we get scammed due to poor systems and weak institutions. On this one I cannot gaslight those who have been scammed. In some instances whole gated communities are even brought down 10 yrs after construction like in Kenya under the guise it belonged to a cement factory or the Landmark hotel in Lagos Nigeria that was demolished 20yrs after construction for being apparently on govt land. Mind u necessary approvals and licenses were given for these projects. 😂

I am a Jamaican female who’s been living in the US since 1980s. And I am now looking to return home to Jamaica. I would suggest those African-Americans who want to leave America, give Jamaica a try. You have great role, models in positions of power there. You got black leaders such as a black Prime Minister, black members of Parliament , black business owners, including many of them who are female. I only left as a child because of economic conditions. But if African-Americans have a skill they can use to earn a decent income and want to leave the US as I said, give Jamaica a try. 🇯🇲❤️

That's the funny thing. We don't get it. Not everybody is going to like you. If we spent half the energy focusing on goals and missions instead of worrying about what others think, we'd be much further. You can vote laws in that favor you economically and politically, but you'll never be able to dictate people's feelings. Move on, I know several Africans that can't stand us either.

I lived overseas during my career in the military, Southeast Asia; Philippines and Japan to be exact, and I feel life could be more rewarding if one just takes their time and research and then prepare strategically of what they want and how best to achieve it, being very meticulous with learning and knowing where one will get through with a bit of ease and where one is certain to face to many closed doors and obstacles is the key to unbecoming stressfully disappointed. I am planning on leaving California within the next three years and headed to three places in East Africa I have picked out for a visit, not going on a vacation but on an expedition to explore where I want to spend the rest of my life and face the least of hassles and inadequacies. Once have validated my plans and confirmed all as legitimate the next thing to do is to ensure my funds are securely in place and then I know I'll be ready to leave. Never allow anticipation or others to push you into leaving before your 100% assured that you are most definetly prepared for what may change and what may come.

Yes some find it hard because, moving there is not the same as when they came on vocation. Partying, living in a nice hotel, eating out in nice restaurants and having good time. So visiting is like a honey moon period as compare to living there. You are absolutely right. Ash.about getting on KZread to attack the country. There were too examples the last week. These AA ladies living in Ghana, and the power went off for at least 6 hours. This ladies went on KZread attacking Ghana like hell because they did not have access to internet. This is on two separate ladies. One was saying in the US, before they put off the power, they inform them when it's supposed to be off and when it comes back. So she could not understand, claiming she paid he bill so they can not just take the power that way. The second lady she is an elderly woman and the way she was attacking Ghana was absolutely disgusting. But some Ghanaians came after them on the comments, telling them they can leave, no one forced them to live in Ghana.Some put any little problem on KZread to voice their anger with the country, which is unfortunate.

in some places they do notify you before cutting off the power, whether it's for a planned outage (for maintenance) or disconnection because of an unpaid bill. i think some people don't know their limits until they are in a situation where they are tested. however, they shouldn't blast them in social media for a known problem.

Black Americans just need to comprehend that Africa is not the only place for Black people to migrate to. In Africa you will be treated like any other foreigner who will be required to get all the necessary papers visa, work permit, etc. IMHO....the important thing to look for when leaving USA is a country with financial and political stability in addition a country that shares YOUR values or at least close to them. The HUGE mistake many Black Americans make when it comes to Africa is that they think because of skin color there's a special relationship but there isn't. The continent of Africa with its many countries have different cultures, languages, customs etc....that will leave Black Americans baffled. Furthermore Africa is NOT the motherland. You're not going to be pampered as the "long lost child" coming home. If a Black American wants to move to a country in Africa do so for the same reasons you'd immigrate to any other country. In fact, Black Americans will have more in common with certain European countries or even Asia than Africa. Just sayin'

Exactly true. And remember many many Africans are leaving in droves to get to Europe and America. Africa has been romanticized to black Americans but the reality is far different. And you're right if you don't have money from an outside source trying to sustain yourselves will be next to impossible. And if you do have money most likely you will be seen and treated like an ATM machine. I was working poor in America for 3/4 of my life but always had running water, a place to live, a kitchen, a good but used car and basic amenities. And access to things where I could better myself. When I could afford to travel I did. And I much preferred Europe over Africa because it's much more like what I was raised in. Africa is just too damn complex and complicated and same skin color is just not that relevant.

This. While I empathize with those struggling with discrimination in the US, the reality is we have far more in common with white Americans than we do Africans. We left (or were snatched) centuries ago. Hell, even Africans whose parents emigrated here have already lost most of their African culture. We speak English, eat hamburgers, and leave home at 18. I'm cool with many Africans...still, I'm just the likeable American to them, I'll never be accepted as one of their own.

If an African country had strong retirement programs in place such as Belize, Panama, Mexico, Dominican Republic etc . They would attract a certain STRONG group of expats ... These expats in turn would be a cornerstone for other less fortunate expats . Also direct flights to Africa and ticket prices is another concern ....I just left Barbados which is over 90% melanated people and that might be my choice . I'm also retired military.

something I learned many years ago, if you have to do with import and export and moving to another country, plan on greasing a lot of palms that's how many third world countries work, everyone is on the hustle but the corruption is no different than what we find in many states, they call them taxes and other things but same conclusion .

Who says there are a lot of African Americans leaving Africa? If so, how many? Do you think some are going back and forth to make money and build in Africa? Perhaps that's what some do, go back and forth. I have been back and forth several times. Perhaps that's their business model go back to America and make money and then go back to Africa to build. Many travel back and forth unknown to many KZreadrs.

Well said. Thank you. AA had been going back and forth for generations, before youtube and the internet. More will come and stay as the continent's growth is sustained and expanded. There is a coming mass migration of non-blacks to Africa from Europe, USA, and Asia. We must be present in the continent to position ourselves for the coming global changes, regardless of current obstacles, barriers and setbacks.

BINGO. The problem is we don't realize the stability of America. Some completely abandon it, and have trouble generating resources in a third world country. I also think people stick with expats and don't establish personal roots with Africans. It's cheesy, but we need a battery type model. Keep your American connections, make African connections, and keep the synergy alive.

Could be better if they chose to invest some of that money (if not all of it) in businesses. Buy property in townships/lower or upper middle class residential areas. Yes,I said townships. There are safe townships with decent,respectful and accommodating people.Some people may not be as fluent in English as one would like them to be but you'll never be discriminated against because of that, they will try speak to accommodate you or teach you their native language rather. Isolation has never and will never do anyone any good. That's just my 2 cents.

My advice to African Americans is to be patient and work with the authorities to make their stay comfortable. The idea of l must get it now does not work in Africa. To succeed in Africa you need to co-operate with authorities and the community in which your living with. Things sometimes move slowly in Africa and they need to understand that.concerning the visa, even Africans in the continent are complaining about it but we also know something is being done to do away with visas across the continent and for the diaspora. This things do take time to make everything work.

My advice from personal experience is to have $$$

Whatever the case may be, Africa is the best place to live in 100 times better than U.S.A Europe Canada, and other Western. The African country has no stress or depression. And also there are more business opportunities to do. My advice for black Americans is whenever they visit the continent they should say to themselves these people are my people and l had inheritance in the land of Africa.

I run a ministry called “feed the children ministry of Zambia. My ministry goes into the poorest, Compounds of Zambia, and there are many of them. We give away food (maze flour, rice sugar and even bars of soap as these poor souls can’t afford a bar of soap, instead they use laundry detergent) These people are suffering, most live in small one room block or mud brick homes with no electricity or running water. This is typical in most African countries. Suicide and murders are common. Recently a young woman killed herself drinking a bottle of cockroach killer. I don’t know where you come from, but the Africa I know is full of extreme poverty, load shedding and water shortages, not to mention 30% inflation and 60% unemployment.

There are far more Africans trying to move to America than vice versa. I know Africans that were about to move back permanently, but after a brief trip or two, they abandoned their plans. Power outages, hygiene differences, health care, etc. I do admit life is easier in Africa, and there are fewer stresses.

​@@josephjohnson1057 I am from Zimbabwe and own a few gold mining operations and doing financially okay. I have no desire to relocate to the US except to visit the Country and just learn about the country. It is still the world's most powerful country.... But I am proudly African.

Ashley, I believed it will be a challenge for younger travelers to stayed because of finances. The more successful people's who probably stayed are retirees because they probably have steady incomes such as pensions or sizable 401 retirement saving. Younger people's either have to have a mobile job or try to live on there economy which can be difficult. For me I wouldn't have a probably because I am retired military. But I don't want to retired in Africa but I love to visited. I will be visiting Johannesburg next summer.

Total culture change. I don’t here anyone talking about extreme poverty in Africa. I’ve been here 2+ years, there are weeks of load shedding and water shortages galore. There is horrible sanitation, garbage everywhere.

I am interested in Botswana. I have been hearing great things about it for years now.

Be real with your self and live a normal life once you get to Africa. Work hard like you used to in America 🇺🇸 and you will reap the rewards of living in Africa. If you go there with a get rich quick mentality you won’t be rich.

I would imagine most Americans are not committing themselves 100% for fear that their new nation doesn't work out. As a result, they're maintaining residence and bills in US while living in new nation.

@midrashchannel9940 mentioned below starting Mental Health practices..thats a niche profitable business..as a Black South African we need more Black owned Black oriented mental health practices as our issues are unique. Black mental health issues globally are not the same as any other race. So we need customized practices which understand us as a people. Yes there are pyschologists in South Africa both Black and White but a majority of the standard practice in dealing with issues is just a blanket approach. Which is shouldnt be like that. South Africa being the most developed and most industralized economy on the continent carries alot of issues which are generational (30 years ago we barely just got off institutionalized racism - Apartheid..lots of wounds) especially amongst the Black community..so we need customized Black/Black focused mental health practitioners. Its a lot. Just my two cents

Being discipline is hard unless you have a steady income. I don't have neither just know I only need a roof, food, an electric an water to be comfortable.

1 think I'd advise african Americans is when you move to africa forget and dump most of the ways of America and just prepare yourself for a complete overhaul of your life, choosing to come here is choosing to reconnect with the land and ways of your ancestors, and coming from places like us and uk, understand that your lineage was stripped of your true culture so in as much as what yall do in America is referred to as culture, most of it is traditions influenced by living circumstances experienced in America n etc so it might not translate well in africa, come here being ready to learn

I would agree with you with an exception - we can connect with the land and at least some of our ancestors in the US. Let’s not forget our families have been here for 400+ years and some of us are are already connected. Mind you indigenous Americans have been on this land for thousands of years and have a way with the land and their ancestors too. And if African Americans made that move to Africa it (land/ancestors) wouldn’t necessarily be a foreign thing to us. Now other things like constant electricity and good roads depending on where in Africa you move and one’s own personal needs could be an issue. Also our culture is culture and is valid. It’s no better or worse than anyone else’s. If certain things don’t translate well in Africa then Africa just may not be for that person.

I’m not giving up collard greens, my lingo or the music that I love. That’s not Babylon - that’s home and my people. My culture is no better or worse than anyone else’s and this idea that we are inferior and need to become a different people is flawed. I think it’s great that Ashley is encouraging people to move and embrace Africa but we don’t need to put down other people in the process.

True in S.A. Let us be presize people are leaving west Africa not South Africa. The African Americans are thriving in S.A. ask Ashly. Here we have laws that make it dificult for scammers. The are west Africans and they come to S.A. thinking that thewill do as they like or it will be easier for them to do their dirty things. As I talk we with the South African police we are arresting. The law in S.A. is strict for those west Africans.

A lot of our people dont know how to save, budget, or just make sound financial choices. any of these flaws could mean the end of your dreams.

Because they went to sub-Saharan Africa. Where they are being routinely victimized. I've been in N. Africa 2 years and am kicking back on my sofa watching this. Just got a new apartment with an incredible rooftop deck. The gas man just knocked on my door to read my meter. He said my gas bill for the month was 33 egps that's 69 cents. lol I'm in my no sleep lounge dress that's midi length. It's a basic dress and I have this large curl afro puff on the back of my head. I just opened the door didn't look in the mirror. The guy was like where are you from? You are very beautiful. I couldn't confirm that since I hadn't looked in the mirror before opening my door. I said America, cause nobody seems to ever guess where I am from. I have accepted my racial ambiguity.

I always suggest to our people read 📚 some books 📚 first on the history of the country, a good cookbook about the food, and learn to speak language briefly... Then invest in a business like Real-Estate, Food Market, or Restaurant.... Maybe a ♻️ Recycling Company too.. Then respect the cultures...

It is important for Black people in the USA and diaspora to have an African country as their second home and a place to do business, the same way the Latin Americans have Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and the Asian have China, Japan, and Korea.

Very true and in general migration of people from Western countries of any race into South America, Africa or Asia (aside from oil rich Arab countries and a couple areas of SEA) is very low. It really is an internet thing and when visiting some of these places and realize you're often the only foreigner around you know it's BS for sure.

Many are called but few are chosen.

Black Americans are Westerners & will always be treated as foreigners wherever they go to live outside the USA. You can’t repatriate to a place you’re not from. We built & were used to build the USA. We kept the Union together during the Civil War and were the reason for the bloodiest war in US history. I’ve visited many countries but this is home.

People must understand that Africa is a continent on Planet Earth and a lot of African Americans moving to Africa live in a dream if not a utopia. Africa is a big and diverse continent and you must set your goals and. your expectations. Being Black also doesn´t mean being African it is a very complex thing. I will take my example: my mum is Congolese, I love the people, the culture of this country but I would definitely not live there ever for retirement I prefer my life in Spain and especially in Madrid( best move I have ever made) But in the meantime Africans are also not welcomed in Black America. Once in New York a person told me "You guys have a good education, study in the best European schools and finally adapt easier than us to the American way of life don´t be surprised if we consider you as outsiders"As said We are on planet Earth and racism, competition unfortunately exists everywhere. The most wherever you are is to fix objectives, set goals and put a discipline in order to build the life you want to have. If you move to Africa "because it is the place where Black People is welcomed" you should be disappointed but on the other side if you move to African because you a project or an idea and you want to share your knowledge in order to help the country you choose to live to progress than you are more than welcome in Africa and you will definitely succeed. Africa is for all black people, anytime they fell to come back they are welcome, but come up with a good plan, buy yourself a land humble yourself, start frm bottom with your small amount I recommend u go for farming business, be patient I repeat be PATIENT

I see Jamaicans live comfortably here in Africa. They quickly learn how it works in Africa & form their own tribe. It's extremely rare to hear em express any unhappiness. They fit in very easily & another thing that helps em settle in Africa without hiccups is that they build their own communities...AAs are too individualistic & broken to form community bonds..

@@deew1160 Atleast you acknowledge that. Being African & also lived amongst you in America I can clearly diagnose the major problem in AAs attempts to adjust themselves into the African environment. To recognize that you hardly come together as a community & to work that out is key to a successful settlement in Africa. You got to form your own tribe & practice group Economics. That way you'll be able to conquer any hurdles that play against you on the African continent.

I think it’s poor planning Americans have the advantage because the dollar is stronger. You can actually look for a remote job that’s going to pay you in dollars if not willing to start a business. Personally I think starting a business would be more beneficial especially in South Africa because South Africans are kinda more westernised compared to other Africans so you can copy whatever business idea from America and bring it to the country provided it has a potential for success. For example in South Africa we don’t even have good wigs so if you can find a cheaper way to ship those wigs from America to South Africa your business will do well. I was discussing opportunities with another American brother the problem is the money.

No expectations and no regrets. Hold on to your money. Their goal is to get free access to your back account by making you their walking ATM. I don't play their games. I had sub-Saharan Africans ask me for $600. With some sob story. I ignore that type. But I do help those I can see are trying to change their situation thru honest work and effort. There is a constant hustle going on, with the low end, how you can tell where they are at financially. You just have to be firm and unyielding. I was nice about saying no in the beginning. Now I just tell them it's not gonna happen and start laughing and move on. The professional circles I am in and living environments normally they have more assets than I do. So, they aren't focused on money.

I agree! I was just in Kenya for about a week, and I realized that they see African Americans as cash cows; giving you sad stories about how hard it is there to make a living, and the cost of their kids' school fees not to mention the attempts of extortion from cops, airport employees, etc. You have to be wise, just like you are here in the US or you'll be depleted of funds quickly. I do, however, believe that we can lead a good life there, but be wise, and educate ourselves regarding their laws, etc.

If a diaspora tells themselves they want to live there then we should pay for help or assistance. Don't hustle the help. know that there are no social safety nets and so on. So either you can afford to live till you die there or not. To me it would be about how to run a business there because the opportunity for growth is wide open and no ceiling with gate keepers , if you know what I mean. Crawl before you walk and learn some Swahili .

For you to be successful in any new country. Try and create a small business and get to know the locals. You should be there to improve or add to the economy.

Proper planning before moving there is essential for your happiness and sucess. Especially figureout how you will make your money while there.

Romanticism surrounding foreign countries is a long-term recipe for disappointment. It's better for a person to embed themselves into the country on every level and also form meaningful relationships with locals. Also, working remotely and having dependable income while there is also a bonus.

Have $$$ key component I know that from personal experience Times I struggled in Tanzania 🇹🇿 but not worrying about $$ helped tremendously 👍
