The real meaning behind O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Фильм және анимация

In order to understand the real meaning and the symbolism in O Brother, Where Art Thou? you need to fully understand the poem it's inspired by: The Odyssey. Here I compare the Coen Brothers' film to Homer's work, and you'll notice that both are tales of transformation.
In the poem, Odysseus and his men were war criminals who are punished by the Gods by being transformed into animals. In this film, Delmar, Pete, and Ulysses are convincts whose punishment is experiencing what was like to be black in the racist deep south.

I’d also like to point out George Nelson shooting the cattle could also be a reference to sun god Helios and his cattle . In the odyssey his men eat Helios cattle and in anger Helios demands revenge from Zeus and in return he kills the remaining men with a thunder bolt. In oh brother where art thou George is on his way to the electric chair and a cow can be seen in the group

11:10 they way Big Dan Teague knows who they are is made pretty obvious in the movie. First he notices them tripping and marching out of step but doesn’t say anything, then when they walk past Big Dan sniffs and catches a strong scent….it’s Everett’s Dapper Dan Pomade, mentioned by other characters to be very pungent spelling and shown as the method the Devil / Sheriff and his hound use to track the boys down over and over again. Everett’s obsession with Dapper Dan and his hair are a pretty obvious reference to his vanity getting them in trouble over and over again….and all the cans floating in the water after the dam is opened and the valley floods aren’t out there without reason either.

“all of the singing” i think is more of a modern adaptation of how epic poetry was treated in the times of homer. these poems weren’t just read, they were chanted, sung, performed, and included accompanying music.

The Coen brothers primary writing / directing style is irony. Although Oh Brother is frequently paralleled to The Odyssey it's also filled with almost countless ironies - a standard of the Coens.

Considering the Coen brothers admitted they never actually read The Odyssey, they included more of the obvious references but weren't aware of the allusions mentioned. I think the narrator has done a good job of finding references to Homer's epic, but they were not intentional on the Coens' part. And yes, the last segment about color, racism, and lack of black representation has nothing to do with this film. The references to "colored folks" and KKK was to illustrate the irony that during the depression era 20's, segregation was not a priority to most people--they had more serious woes to deal with. Those who were preoccupied with "inclusion and dilution of culture and heritage" (like homer stokes) were cartoonish. Even the KKK can be heard chanting "eenie, meenie, miney mo." Look at how the townsfolk favored Pappy based on their favorite band and could care less who supported ethnic purity. Even Pappy says "don't look like they mind integration."

Just watched this video essay straight after watching the film and loved it. Thank you for helping breakdown the similarities between this and The Odyssey. One small thing: Tommy in the film is actually based on the real blues player Tommy Johnson, who had the same 'devil at the crossroads' folklore as Robert Johnson (no relation, just coincidence). The two often get jumbled up for obvious reasons!

Amazing analysis! I watched the movie when I was 14 or 15 ... but somehow I stumbled upon the siren scene here on KZread and only then I realised the Odyssey theme behind the movie. Now I have a lot more appreciation for the movie, this takes it to a deeper level with more symbolism. Have to rewatch it sometime. Only thing bothering me with this video: Why did you call the Odyssey a poem and not an epic?

You don't have a clue of what's this movie is about. But that lying devil you got do. This movie is soo deep in the spirit. It is about the salvation of three men who belong to God. Soo afflicted and bound up with chains binds and ties. And the one thing GOD requires for them to do to get them out of their affliction is to cry out and ask GOD to forgive them for their sin. And to save them. It is about how God miraculously saved three afflicted men whose lives is so messed up that there is no one to help them now. Lost wife and children. No money, no job prospect. Breaking out of jail and no hope of getting their life back together......

There are a lot of cases where “woke pandering” ruined a film. This is not one of those cases. Nearly everything the Coen brothers do in this movie is done on purpose. If that analogy can be drawn, then it was likely meant to be there. Please have a more open mind when talking about these topics.
