I think I've mentioned it before but Frank Miller always found it funny that the Batman editors picked the wrong one of his two Bat books to copy. Another thing I wanted to point out is Frank Miller was an anti-establishment anti Reagan kind of person. He's not really making fun of the left as you said. He's more so just making fun of the establishment and the way things were going in the '80s. He's making fun of the people trying to be sympathetic towards horrible people. I still find it strange that you say the left when I think he was more making fun of the right at the time.

This fight in this story is perfect because it's supposed to be _sad_ that Superman and Batman are fighting after literal decades of being friends. It's supposed to be a commentary on how far the government has fallen in America, not a set up for Great Value Injustice. That BvS movie, man. I remember when Crisis on Infinite Earths was coming out with all those cameos, and there was a scene where Kevin Conroy says a line from this book, and one of the highest viewed clips was titles "Kevin Conroy makes a reference to BvS" or something like that. *pinches bridge of nose*

We're looking at a trimmed down version of a groundbreaking book with 1980s values with a 2022 mentality. Some things didn't translate well. Some things are out of order, too. I'll add that Batman didn't kill Joker. He broke his neck and Joker found the strength to kill himself and frame Batman. There were lots of moments where it seemed like one thing and was actually something else. Batman appearing to use a rifle but it was actually a grappling gun. Mostly accurate adaptation but missing some of the nuance that makes the book great.

The guy is also the one who solidified the Selina Vs Talia wars still raging today) almost 10 before this book bruce was depicted as an older man...who had married to Selina Kyle and had a daughter Helena Wayne. Sure batman's last 2 years of life were massively tragic but he got 20 years of blissful happiness before this.

I first watched this when I was around 9-10. The VA isn't too bad but I do agree on the character designs as it seems like everyone pumps iron five times a week. Joker was in a mental hospital, comatose for maybe 10 years, so you would expect him to be even slimmer, almost like Alfred is in the movie. Bruce is supposed to be well past his prime so while he as a character would no doubt keep working out thanks to habit-you would think he would be around half his muscle build just thanks to his advanced age. Hell, even Gordan, whose 70 and at that point where he should be teaching his grandkids the good swear words, looks like he could take Conor McGregor and kick his ass.. Then here is the mutants and yeah, they are just there as villains as none of them have any agency, or real intelligence as they go from the Mutant Leader, to that Nazi chick to batman without much thought. Even Frank seemed to realize this and makes a comment about it in story. What makes this even more confusing is why would an entire generation go down such a route in the , Kelly is much younger yet she knows of the stories, so wouldn't these young adults, who most likely saw the Bat on the news or in person, kicking ass and saving Gotham and it's think twice about crime? Wouldn't it make more sense for them to try their hands at vigilante work and then fail miserably, becoming part of the problem and perhaps the reason why the rule of law is so weak in Gotham? I get it, he needs help and is preparing the city for when he dies-but wouldn't he seek out aide he can trust? Wouldn't Dick make an appearance as we know this is a timeline where Jason died and stayed dead-but what about the OG boy wonder. Wouldn't he have something to say about his mentor/father figure going back to crime fighting at his age, wouldn't he want to help the stubborn mule of a man once accepting he can't stop him? GA seems to think this, hence why he helps. That being said, I still like these two movies. I never minded Batman killing Joker as partly, in the beginning I thought Joker somehow snapped his neck so that everyone would blame Batman, after all-he was still talking and lucid long after Batman let go, and after that-I saw it as Joker doing what he always wanted, which was to get Batman to snap. His fight with Superman was great, and was more then just 'let's make them fight' there are stakes, the two have reason to throw hands. Superman is flawed but it feels like it was a weakness he always had he's catchphrase at one point was 'Truth, Justice and the American way' so him siding with the US government, even on matters where supes shouldn't be involved such as helping them invade the DC version of Cuba feels like something that COULD happen.

BvS Batman finds out about kryptonite, the White Portuguese, unencrypted Luthor's files and finds stuff about WW and the other meta humans, how Superman fights and how the fight will go in order to finish next to the spear, and then finds out where Martha is held hostage and the best approach to it. Lex Luthor manipulating him just makes Lex way more dangerous on how smart he is, not Batman being dumb. And it is not that Batman doesn't realize Superman is a good guy. He doesn't want to see him at all like one. He has to convince himself that this alien is a potential threat and since it is the last of his species it could be a permanent good thing to kill him since there won't be no more, unlike common criminals.

Whatever criticisms are leveled against this comic, I will always say that the build up and return of Batman in the first issue of the comic is fucking perfect. The movie only scratches the surface of how epic his return is. In the comic, we can hear Bruce’s internal monologue. Bruce heard the voice of Batman, telling him that the time has come. And Batman’s voice drowns out Bruce’s. I’m gonna inject a little bit of that here: *Bruce stands up after seeing the rising crime on the news “The tine has come. You know it in your soul. For I AM your soul. “ We don’t even see Batman for like 5 more pages after that. We see him stopping 3 crimes off screen. Then, when in pursuit of a bank robber, we get an entire page dedicated to one perfect image of Batman, soaring through the sky in pursuit of the criminals. Here’s Batman’s thoughts: “This should be agony. I should be a mass of aching muscle - broken, spent, unable to move. And were I an older man, I surely would. But I am a man of thirty - of twenty again. The rain on my chest is a baptism. I am born again.” So epic. Also I can’t forget my favorite quote in the entire comic: “THESE ARE THR WEAPONS OF COWARDS!” *Batman says as he breaks a shotgun over his knee.

People give Miller a lot more credit than he deserves when it comes to Batman because of TDKR's popularity, Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams were washing off the stink the Adam West's Batman back in the 70s in bringing the character back to his darker roots.

I happened to have loved the style and I loved the comic (in graphic novel form) when I found it a few years after it came out in a mall bookstore accidentally. I'd been away from buying any kind of comic book kind of thing for over 15 years and just came across it while walking through the store on the way into another area of the mall. Later when I saw the DVD come out I snapped it up since I loved the comic so much. I like the block kind of style since that's what the original comic style was and thought the movie remained true to the original art. It also captured the darker attitude Miller put into the story so well. I never did like the 'campy' Batman all that much that was more prevalent when I was a kid. I was fine with the voice acting and thought their voices were more in line with the darker tone of the movie rather than the voices from the various cartoons that came before had done.
