The director of Lego Island, Wes Jenkins, emailed me once after I shot him an email thanking him for Lego Island. After reading online how much trouble he had to convince Lego to even do a game and make it the way it is, which you can see when you play the later Lego Island trash, I just had to thank the man. He was extremely nice and courteous. He sadly passed away a few years later. Wonderful game. Art, in a way.

Strangely enough, there's a Finnish version of Lego Island 2 on the PS1 that certain databases claim to exist, but has never been found. It appears in several databases with the serial "SLES-03302", which matches closely with the serials for the other languages, but a copy has never been spotted.

The Dutch version, while basically impossible to track down, is also a very weird case. There are some pieces of information online listing Dutch voices for Lego Eiland 1. But there's no way of checking. The thing with dutch games or media in general back then was that a lot of different versions were available for some reason. The dubbed version, original, subtitled of all kinds of media. With the boxes often barely (if at all) showing what version you were dealing with, sometimes even the wrong version in the wrong box. It happened with games, videotapes, dvd's you name it. This might be the case with Lego Eiland 1 as well. But since any version of this media is already a pain to track down, or even get working for the ones that own it, I'm afraid we might never find out. I would almost want to contact the Dutch voices if they have any memory of ever doing the game. Maybe someday.

I have no clue if it was the case for this game, but back in those days you often had a separate "flemish (belgian dutch)" and "dutch (netherlands) version for dubbed media. They're essentially both dutch, but with voice actors from Belgium and the Netherlands respectively. In more recent years it's usually a co-operative thing with a 50/50 voice actor split.

On one hand I love how almost everything is fully localized in German at usually very high quality with professional voice work, but on the other hand it's very likely the reason why most Germans don't speak English all that well. Usually you see games and movies translated to at least French, German, Italian and Spanish so I wonder if it's a similar situation in those countries. I've been to France often enough to know that English isn't their greatest strength either.

7:21 Perhaps this is the source of looping music in video games? Congrats on finally getting a copy dude! This reminds me a lot of a similar journey I went through when I was in high school in Japan. I was trying to track down all of the Japanese versions of Bungie's pre-Halo games, and it culminated in me visiting the actual office of the localisation company, called Attain, who translated Bungie's early titles. I couldn't believe my eyes when they handed me new-old-stock copies of some of those games, it was a magical moment for me. Btw you're totally right about HardOff, I used to go to the one in Akiba once every two weeks or so and spent about 2 - 3 hours combing through every last bin of CDs and carts looking for games that weren't about pachinko or horse racing. Totally worth the back pain.
Finding Lego Island in a Hentai Game Store is like finding a laptop at a McDonald's.

I think it's a matter of the market being just too small. I remember it being major news at the time that Lufia II got a Dutch translation, that was basically unheard of for a game of that size. It happened *rarely*, especially in games that weren't explicitly aimed at the childrens' market. Ubisoft did do *some* localisation in the early 2000s. the Sands of Time games had a Dutch UI, and Beyond Good and Evil had a full Dutch voice cast that was... acceptable, given the standards at the time.

@@Thornskade Mine (the french edition) came with a mini-figure of the infomaniac in it. One of my most cherished minis honestly. You can google it to see how it looks, but it's pretty much how he is in game!

@@MarneusAndMilkyBlood I dug out my box of the game and it doesn't say anything about a mini figure being included. I can't remember if I have it or not, my old LEGOs are scattered across several different toy boxes.

@@Thornskade That's super weird! Maybe it was just a french edition thing! The box I had (and still have somewhere at my parents) had a little thing about the free mini in the box but now I can't find pictures of that editon on the internet!
5:55 idk why but it's always exciting to me to see a Toyota bB (or it's american counterpart) just randomly in a video as someone who owns a Scion xB, even if the video is on a completely different subject
''unfortunatley i cant even show it to you properly'' but he can play that music
This is a fantastic video, I love learning about these old Lego games from before the TT games golden era
" but it did find **insert item** which I did end up buying "
7:28 Actually in the West we used to have places that played their own OSTs too all day, but it was phased out as decades went by, most big places just play top 20 songs nowadays. I miss the old Price Chopper and Biway soundtrack 😶
Bravo man, i can but imagine the feeling when you got the game in your own hands.
That was more facinating than I would have expected, quite the journey and lots of neat side-finds along the way. Makes me wonder if I should try running my old copy of Lego Island 2 on my modern system just for giggles
Loved the vid, personally not really interested in lego island but your videos really make it interesting, so much so that I've watched them many times over.
I love how the Infomaniac's speech at the beginning is exactly the same, even starting with the English "Hello!" (and, of course, pronouncing "konnichiwa" correctly).
Dude, i just randomly happened upon your channel via this video and the content was very entertaining but if we're being honest it was totally the your outro that got my sub, DK64 one of my fav games ever!
Classic Windows PC gaming in Japan has always interested me, since I am super into that era of PC games. Lots of interesting stuff that isnt "that" kind of Japanese PC games, like tons of Falcom games and Japan-exclusive PC ports of console games (usually also exclusive to Japan). Korean PC game collecting is also interesting for that reason. I was always curious how big the community is for Japanese gamers interested in the much larger classic PC gaming market from the 90s and 2000s that Europe and the United States had, like kind of how so many people are interested in classic Japan exclusive console games that never left it. Also the fact that Japan has locations with their own area-BGM just doesnt even seem surprising to me.

I wonder what happened to cause Japan's PC games industry to be entirely associated with games that they couldn't get on to consoles because of the.. catgirls...
6:13 Matt: talking about all the challenges sorting through mountains of smut in adult stores to try find a copy of Lego Island Also Matt: "speaking of hard" Everyone: (⊙‿⊙) Always love your videos KC!

I’m so happy I was up until 3 am on a school night and found your channel
Brooo Someone bought me Lego Island when I was 5 years old and my computer couldn't run it so I gave it away to my friend Never got to play it :(

Maybe this installer, that errors when your computer isn’t old enough is their solution to the steering problem.
Damn impressive work! It would've been great if this also could've been done for Lego Rock Raiders! I know they found alot of copies all around, except a few like korean/japanese i believe!
That box and disc design is absolutely perfect!
Man i love this channel its like heaven of retro stuff
Weird new dream: I want to go to Hard-Off
Man that’s some dedication right there. Congrats!

I see a fellow [DELETED CHANNEL] fan.
Hi Matt, I still own my italian version, in case you're interested. I had completely forgotten about it, thank you for bringing up some good memories!
imagine watching this with your kids and then suddenly
Make a video about modding a Lego Island or other game into an "ultimate game" with your skills
We need more videos of people finding lost media and preserving it like you just did and what Nick Robinson does.
entertaining AF! nice 1 man!
Extremely interesting video man I loved it!
I always wondered if lego island had international versions. Happy to see this preserved!
11:00 when Matt said:"you know who" Siri on my mom's phone will awake for some reason.
Daanngggg haven't seen or played this game in years!!! Brought back a lot of memories.
I revisit this video every so often just to hear Matt say "I didn't Nick Robinson it." Always cracks me up :D
