@@SirHilaryManfat That was an incredible fight scene. Add to that the leadup in the hall with the hammer and bat duo, the epic prison yard fight manufactured to look like one continual shot and that great car chase/fight and this is a must see movie.

As well as 'Ong-Bak' (2003).

I'm surprised it didn't get mentioned since Emily mentioned Dredd a few times... This movie came out before Dredd, so when Dredd came out one of the things it was criticized for was ripping off The Raid. But the reality is that Dredd had actually been written back in 2006, and was filmed in 2010 a year before the Raid. But due to delays in Post Production and the studio pushing back it's release, it ended up coming out 7 Months after the Raid. I still see people claiming Dredd ripped off this movie despite it being an impossibility.

This is a masterpiece of action cinema. The sequel is even better.

The sequel isn't better. It's good, but the first movie is far better. The second one is a bit dragged on and the fights are tacky (hammer girl and baseball bat guy I'm looking at you)

The energy, dynamism and brutality make this one of the best action films since 'Die Hard' (the comparisons notwithstanding). The second is also well worth checking out.

Fun Fact to mention Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park worked on the music for the film.

The Raid movies absolutely hate tendons.

This is one of my FAVOURITE ACTION MOVIES. It's just so raw, unfiltered. People get bloody and sweaty and exhausted. And each action is clearly shown instead of cutting away or having too much shaky cam. It's fantastic.

One of my favorite action movies. Emily’s reaction were fantastic.

This was SUCH A GOOD MOVIE! So much suspense and action. Not one part ever felt like it was dragging.

Just love Mad Dog The actor plays another character in raid2 the search for more violence. Also in John Wick3

PLEASE eventually do a film called Merantau. It's the same director and leading star (Iko Uwais). Even the actor who played Mad Dog is in it. It was Iko Uwais first film, and it sadly gets forgotten about when bringing up his filmography.

Just like all alt-music can be classified as pre-Nirvana vs post-Nirvana, all action movies are measured against The Raid.

"Too angry to die" Sounds like a straight to streaming action movie that Scott Adkins would do. 😁

I am SO EXCITED y'all FINALLY watched this fantastic film!!! It's brutally raw and so tight in every aspect. I do agree y'all should watch the sequel. I do warn you, however, it's a LOT bloodier than the 1st one. It's still an enjoyable film with an intriguing storyline. A few fun facts: Rama and Mad Dog are in The Force Awakens in a wasted cameo. In that back injury scene, the stuntman actually severely injured his head and (I think) back when the wire he was hooked was pulled too hard. The stuntman on the floor who got stabbed in the chest 5 times ACTUALLY got stabbed and cracked his ribcage. I also TOTALLY agree with your ratings, although mine would be an 11. This is tied with Die Hard as my favorite action movie of all time.

When this hit the states in springtime of 2012, done deal. One of the most influential action films ever. Following the buzz and it's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. This was the next new phenomenon and we wanted more. Very few theaters had it. But the DVD, On demand markets made sure it was available for major viewing. In those days of the 2010s, Guerilla filmmaking at it's finest. Iko Uwais and others physical dynamos involved with this are still the future of action.

When that first trailer dropped, I was on board and counting the days till I could see it. And it did not disappoint.

What Matt says about the movie starting, getting to action real fast, then ramping everything up further and further, small breather in the middle and then its on again.... the same formular perfectly worked in Mad Max Fury Road too

I love that The Raid features extensive use of Silat, in all its underapreciated glory. For some Muay Thai centered movies - Ong Bak, The Protector, both with the amazing Tony Jaa.

I remember at the beginning of this channel. Emily asking for a name for Matthew and Matthew sarcastically saying "great, open that up to the internet."

I honestly believe that the "stunts" in this weren't stunts. I'm sure that they hired extras without telling them that a martial artist will be kicking the crap out of them. This feels just too real.

The way a lot of the stunts use the environment and gravity just feels so good. A couple of times the pain is just watching a guy land really hard in the wrong place.

That scene where he kills the guy with the bottom of the door is so brutal😂. The Raid 2 is also an awesome movie, they somehow upped the action in it to the point where it's actually an endurance to watch it (the Karambit fight is amazing).

You know how, in civilian self-defence classes, they tell you to kick people in the groin (it works on women too) or poke them in the eyes? Somehow I don't think that's going to be enough to stop Mad Dog...or Rama, come to think of it.

Ohhhh yeah. The sequel is also just incredible.

Once again, Emily is a treat. I loved all of her exclamations through the fight scenes. I knew she would have this type of fit once you got to this movie.

Like y'all, something I really appreciated was the ending. I picked up on the brother recognizing him in the footage, but I thought he was going to be undercover which would not have been as good as what actually happened. 👍

my official suggestion for a movie to watch based on this reaction: THE NIGHt COMES FOR US. Its a Netflix original featuring Joe Taslim directing and starring, he's in this, Iko Uwais who is the lead in The Raid 1 and 2 is supporting. the fights are AMAZING and Brutal as you gonna see in a movie... the violence and gore rivailing the splatter genre. also it features JULIE ESTELLE as The Operator, and when you have watched THE RAID 2 you know she's gonna kick some serious ass.

I love action movies but I'm not someone who usually cares about 'good kills', and that's often more of a slasher/horror thing anyway. ...but that back break when the guy falls on the wall, Mad Dog taking the slow broken light tube throat cut and the god damned 'neck first into a jagged broken door' are probably my top three most brutally visceral deaths in any movie I've ever seen.

I must have the lung compacity of a whale because I don't think I took a breath for over an hour during my first watch of this movie.. plus to think it was directed by a guy from Wales..

The sequel is even better and dare I say, it's a masterpiece.

you must follow this one with the Raid 2 .... Raid 2 is just a masterpiece in everything. Gareth Evans is just a Masterclass in directing action even before John Wick came to light. Safe to say that Raid 1 and Raid 2 were the new fathers of the new Action Movies Definition.

Still better than “Love Actually” 🤣. I love this film so much. Great direction, cinematography and editing. All the fights look like they hurt and they are glorious. Please say you guys are watching Raid 2 soon.

Martial arts movies are like dance movies, but more acceptable to men. There is a real beauty in seeing people with skill at moving their bodies, and a director/choreographer who can showcase that skill. Yes, it's 'fake' in that the actors are doing preset movements and are trying to reduce the full impact, but these sequences of moves take huge stamina and flexibility - years and years of hard work to get to that level. Quick cuts and extreme close-ups would be an insult to action this good.
