Please do a video on books where the characters Earn their abilities . The warriors who train from age six who aren’t prodigies . The wizards that study as opposed to the sorcerers that just “feel” their spells and who are more powerful then their teachers. The clerics that are pious that pray or sacrifice something about themselves for their spells as opposed to being the one in a thousand years chosen one . Where are those stories about those that earn their place ?
The author actually stated that he wanted to write this story for his son so that he (the son) could have a fantasy protagonist with the same skincolour as him. That is pretty sodding cool imo!

Tau may be one of the most violent, vengeful, and unstable protagonists in fantasy. To paraphrase the Omehi queen "If you can't be a hero, be a weapon."

The Rage of Dragons has only one glaring weakness... the rest of the series isn't finished yet.
Now you have to do a "1st books of fantasy series' ranked" video 😂 Thank you the video Daniel!

After watching Daniel, I have like millions of books to read
Daniel: "As much as I didn't like Wizard's First Rule is how much I liked this book." Me: Crap! Now I need to rearrange my TBR list and buy another book. 😪
SPOILER Amazing book. Something I loved that Winter did was write a few of the passages from the POV of Tau's enemy. It made me feel the fear, admiration, and awe they felt at watching Tau approach them, not as a human, but as something closer to a demon; a result of his indomitable will that kept him going back to Isihogo.
The audiobook narrator actually enhances this book as well, somehow

I’m not a quick reader. 3 days I agree with everything you said.
First time I've seen you gush about a book that isn't WOT😂. Okay another book for the TBR. I trust you.
African influenced fantasy has always been something I was interested in, though I do love the common European settings of most fantasy stories I wish more authors explored more settings. So I'm definitely going to pick this up.

The best part of stumbling upon your channel is that we have almost identical taste in fantasy/sci-fi. It makes finding new books to read incredibly simple. Thank you for all you do!
I finished Lord of Chaos from WOT last night. Watched this video the following morning and bought the digital book on Amazon 8 minutes in. You just made it sound too good!

The end of Lord of Chaos is my favorite scene in WoT. I sure hope the tv shows gets there and does the scene justice.
Danny Goggles back again! No but seriously, great review Daniel.
The Rage of Dragons was my introduction to fantasy books. It’s popped up on my FB feed and bought it by chance. I was blown away! I needed more and started looking for other fantasy books to read. If it wasn’t for Evan Winter, I would have never found this channel.
immediately bought the Kindle version. I am excited to dive right in. Your enthusiasm was infectious
Listened to this book on Audible while driving across the country. Usually need to chew on sunflower seeds to stay awake. I didn’t want to get to my destination. Best book In a long time if not ever and I go through them. Plus the narrator was perfect! I can’t wait for the next one.
Glad you enjoyed it so much. I agreed with most of your points. The only thing I added in my video review was giving people a heads up how much righting/action there is in the story because not everyone enjoys military fantasy.
I've been in a MASSIVE reading slump. This is the best book I've ever read in my entire life and I found it because of this review. I love this book and this world. I love the romance. I love the descriptions. I loved the pacing. I'm feigning for the next book. 20000 stars because I love it. I listened to the audiobook 3 times this week and am getting the physical book today. I. Love. This. Book. Thank you for introducing me to it.
I am in chapter three, and I have have never before wanted to tear a characters throat out with my teeth. I want to do that now. This is incredible writing.
Thank you for the recommendation. I read it in two days as well. Love it. Been a while since I picked up a gripping novel. Tau’s journey is insane and the writing let you feel and understand him.
Awesome. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, I will be checking this out presently.
I've just finished the book minutes ago and I must agree that it's one of the strongest debuts I've ever read. It was literally between 4 and 5 stars for me but, you comparing it to Elantris put things into perspective and I rounded it up to 5 stars. Really worth a read, will definitely be rereading it because I still am a bit confused by all the terms and names~
This might be your best review, it felt really well thought out and you went into enough detail without spoilers. I commend you
Yes! I agree! I loved this book too. Can’t wait for book two!
Great review. I really like your take on books - I'm picking this one up today.
My teacher recommended this for us to do a book review like u did. I was a little confused on how it wuz supposed to look or sound so thank you for helping with tht!
Wow. That just skyrocketed to the top of my TBR list. Well done Daniel and well done Evan Winters!
This book had been sitting on my kindle since it came out, now I’ll have to bump it up my TBR

Thank you for the book suggestion. Bought it on Kindle halfway through your review
I've noticed that I only seem to comment on your videos when I disagree with you, when in fact I like a lot of what you do and agree with so much. So I wanted to find this video so I could say, this review is outstanding and the book itself is spectacular.
Well here's another one added to the list thanks Daniel now my bookshelf continues to grow with TBR
Hell yes. I read this right before you did and immediately hoped you’d read and review it. I found it on Reddit too. I can’t wait for the next book. I sincerely hope people catch on because this book is probably the best book I’ve read this year.
I bought this book immediately after watching this video because you hyped it up so much (even putting aside my read-through of the Witcher books for it). I'm super glad that I did! It was such a fantastic book and I cannot wait for the next one. Thanks Daniel! Keep up the good work!
This book was good, but as debut fantasy novels go it’s nowhere near «The Darkness that comes before» by R. Scott Bakker. I know some (perhaps many) are put of by the headiness of this book, but that is because it seeks not just to entertain, but also invites readers to reflect upon some fundamental themes of the human condition (such as our illusions of free will). Moreover, «The Darkness that comes before» and subsequent books are among the few fantasy books I have read that deal with psychological trauma in way that is not hand-wavy or clearly defensive or immature. These books are actually very align with seminal scholarly works such as «shattered assumptions» by R. Janoff-Bulman (2010) and "Trauma and Human Existence» by Stolorow (2011), which I appreciate as a clinician and trauma- researcher.
Thank you for telling me about this. I finished book one today and started book two today.
I’m intrigued, added to my list 👍🏻
The title and cover make it look like it’s a asoiaf book
It’s been on my TBR.... picking it up, thanks!
Thanks for the recommendation. I needed a book like this❤❤❤
Thanks for this review! New subscriber, long time fantasy reader. I have read and re-read all of my favorites and have a hard time finding a great fantasy book that I want to stick with. FYI - you had me at "as much as I did not like Wizards First Rule."
I already have the self-published edition and the traditionally published one. I think I'm gonna bump this one up my TBR as well
Thanks for the review. I am gonna check it out and see.
Great review. Was definitely a refreshing change. Combat sequences were well done, characterization beyond strong. My only gripe was it felt like there were an awful lot of proper names/titles I had to keep track. But that's on me. I couldn't believe it was a debut novel either.
Wow that is a great review. My to read list has gotten stagnant and I will be picking this up first chance.
This book, along with The Poppy War trilogy, are some of my favorite unique fantasy works. They're amazing and I need more
I read this book around a year ago, when it was $0.99 on the Kindle Store and was truly astounded at the quality of this book. How could it be so cheap? Anyway, best book purchase I think I've ever made, really. Glad you got round to reading it and loved it :)
Thanks for the tip. Just finished it and loved it. Greetings from Marion Ohio.
Putting it on the tbr list. Honestly, wish I knew how to sell a book like you.
You had me at "great book" and "dragons". Anything with those two factors and I'm in love.
I've had this in my to-read and I'm plowing through it this week and LOVE it. Though, if I were to critique it, it's not as unique as people think the writing is, it's very classic YA before that was a HUGE genre. Has a lot of Starship Troopers (and other mid-century YA) in it's DNA. But on top of that, I LOVE the setting and really want to see more. The pacing is amazing, it's so much better paced than so many books I've read lately.
Great to hear! Guess I'll have to get a copy.
I was considering this on kindle earlier as it's only £3.99, and it's new and had a lot of positivity, so I was hugely tempted anyway. Then this turns up on my KZread front page and Daniel loves it and now I'm utterly convinced.
I loved this book! I was so surprised and found myself engrossed. I couldn't put it down the whole last day I was reading it. When I found out this was a debut I was so shocked. Definitely one of my favorites I've read this year.
I initially started watching your channel for the recommendation of The First Law trilogy, unfortunately I didn't like it very much, it was good, but not as good as I expected. So when I saw this review, I was a littel hesitant, but being a Black American it sounded intriguing. So I used your Amazon link and put it on my list to read. So a couple of days ago I finally got to reading it and OMG, Thank You. What a fantastic book, easily the best book I've read in years (and that is not hyperbole). I simply devoured this book and I am so excited to see where this series will go.
I really enjoyed this book! It was great, and I can't wait until the next book comes out! Glad you liked it too
Thank you for your review of the Rage of Dragons. I was thinking similarly with this book with regard to all the hype. I'll be picking it up!

Bought the book! Started reading the Rage of Dragons last night!
I can’t wait to read this!
Definitely adding this one to the TBR :)
I saw it on 2 for one credit on audible and got it because I vaguely remember you giving it a good review. So thanks for that mate.
Just finished....my goodness this was really, really good. I love Wheel of Time and several books by Brandon Sanderson, and Evan Winter delivers an epic story that sucked me in and kept me entertained to the end!
Yooo, those glasses are dope.
Something to consider reading down the line, thanks for the review~
I saw Peter V Brett recommend this series and I loved his Demon Cycle, but his last recommend, Prince of Thorns, didn’t fly with me. Rage of Dragons however, I devoured in 2 days and reread it again in another 3. Such a good book. Really excited for more.
Popped up in my home page again, looked at it again and been feeling like rereading it for months but been on a WoT spree. This book delivers its value over like a movie you will remember picture perfect scenes and understand the FEELS of the main character so much. When the main character falls to his knees YOU will fall with him THATS how good it is.
Of everything I’ve read on your recommendation, this is my favorite. My only issue is a personal issue, rather than something he did wrong, because of the different setting (which I actually really like a lot) I found the names and terms harder to keep track of while I was listening to the audiobook
*is working on debut fantasy novel* Way to intimidate me sir! xD Thank you for giving us a new book to read.
Sounds like a pretty good book... Will definitely give this a try. And it's his first book!?... Dang, that's crazy.
Loved the hell out of this book! Cannot wait for the 2nd book to come out now. Also check out We Are The Dead by Mike Shackle. Another great fantasy book that I have in my top reads this year.
now I'm scared, what if I don't like it lol, I wanted to read this as soon as I read the description looking for 2019 releases. Definitely going to read it before your spoiler chat, so excited! Happy Reading!
Debuts have been pretty on fire for awhile, just looking at things like Katherine Arden's Bear and the Nightingale or R.F. Kuang's Poppy War, utterly solid debuts that show no sign of the debut jitters. Other's that were particulary strong and only got better with their fast following subsequent releases are things like The Books of Babel, Raven's Mark, or The Wounded Kingdom. Beyond that Orbit in particular have been doing a fantastic job of picking up on self pub first novels and converting the series to trad pubs (as with Rage of Dragons) that hold up with the best of the market, I'd be surprised if I don't see this one up for a few awards next year.
Watched your review.. Bought the book.... Awesome.... Thank you
“This book is so good im mad about it,” is now my go-to recommendation pitch, so thank you for that
I love that there is an epic book that doesn't take its epic tag as a go ahead to tell us about things that'll never matter. Just wondering though, if a person was to ever self publish a book would we be able to send it to you for a review, or just your thoughts?
Based on this glowing review, I read the Kindle sample. And basically it’s battle scenes only. Does this continue for the whole book? If so, I don’t think it’s for me. The magic’s really intriguing, though. And so far your recs are really panning out for me. Locke Lamora, yes! Mistborn, ok! Name of the Wind, nah. (I’m staying away from the biggies - Wheel of Time and Stormlight - for now, but you’ve put them on my radar for sure.) Many thanks!
Thanks Daniel I'm going to read it
Okay I paused this at around 4:36 and bought the book in my kindle. HYPEEEEEEEEEED
I've read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy novels and this is the best debut, imho. I have it on Kindle, Hardcover and audible, and it is well worth it. Sanderson and Weber are probably my favorite authors (I mean I've read nearly everything they have written), but Evan has the potential to jump in that discussion pool.
Going to have to put this on my tbr but just started WoT so may take awhile to get to it haha
Interesting, will give it a look.
got the audiobook.
I'll have to check this one out., But was wondering, have you read "Dawn of Wonder: The Wakening" ? I LOVE this book, am anxiously awaiting book 2 to come out, hopefully soon. Would love to see a review of it by you
Okay, I'm convinced
LMAO. "So good I was angry about it" was exactly how I felt.
Holy smokes... this book is really great! Thanks for the recommendation Greene Dan! What are your thoughts on "The Land" series and LitRPG in general?
Gonna pick it up once Book 2 comes out this year :)
Just finished this and halfway through the sequel. After ploughing through Stormlight Archive I needed something fast paced and full of action and I wasn't dissapointed. I love Tau and the gang. Where we fight the World burns!
I have got to read this!
I have it. Glad you enjoyed it.
Dammmnnnnn Daniel, one more on the list now! :)
Hoorah a positive review 👍😎
I'd love to read it but I can't handle needing to wait 1, 2 3+ years for each next book to come out. I forget what happened in the previous books and need to re-read them. Hopefully I'll remember to come back to it in 10 years or so when the series is finished.
I remember this author doing an AMA in r/Fantasy.
