From Season 1 Episode 12, Will's "message-in-a-bottle" experiments deplete the supply of fuel for the Jupiter 2. John and Don work on an alternate fuel source, but they cannot stabilize the output. Deciding to build a smaller, 2-man craft, they pull the reactor chamber out and use Will's experiments to construct a "space raft."

About Lost in Space: The Robinson family was supposed to set off on a five-year mission to explore a distant planet, but an act of sabotage by the scheming Dr. Zachary Smith -- who managed to get himself trapped aboard the spaceship -- leaves them adrift in space for three years. The Robinsons, pilot Don West, Dr. Smith and their trusty robot move from planet to planet, always searching for a way to return to Earth.

I remember, running home from school, full speed, as this started at 3pm. Whipping up a big batch of cool-aid, (double dose of sugar!), and cranking the volume, way up.
For a kid watching this, it was a moment of high anxiety.
Dr. Smith: I take it that you're thoroughly familiar with what is necessary to release that bag of wind out there. Robot: Thoroughly familiar with bag of wind right here. Dr. Smith: You mean me? Robot: Affirmative. Dr. Smith: Very funny.

Back in those days (1960's, not "1997") little kids talking like that to an adult could expect to be beaten up. However on this show Will is part of the crew, Dr Smith is a scumbag stowaway, so Will outranks him.
Will and Dr. Smith thought they landed on a different planet just like The Skipper and Gilligan thought they washed up onto a different island after their raft was chopped up by a shark. Only similaritie for each of them, same planet, same island.
