The Racer at Kings Island, celebrating its 50th anniversary season, recently gave its 108th millionth ride - the most in park history! That’s an average of more than 2.1 million rides per year given since the twin-track wooden roller coaster welcomed its first riders in 1972.
Fifty years ago when Kings Island opened, The Racer was the star attraction and the most talked about ride in America. The design of the ride was truly inspirational, a twin-tracked, out-and-back racing coaster, unlike no other than had been built. Kings Island had in The Racer a ride with high capacity, graceful aesthetics, and one of the best rides in the country. With its red, white and blue color scheme, The Racer was visually stunning!
Prior to The Racer, the demand for roller coasters, and more specifically wooden roller coasters, had been in decline since the Great Depression. Literally hundreds of roller coaster built from 1890-1930 met the fate of the wrecking ball. By 1965, only about 200 of the 2,000 roller coasters built through the 1920s remained in operation. Then along came The Racer. The ride’s instant popularity sparked a roller coaster renaissance that has yet to slow down a half-century later.
In addition to acting as the catalyst for other potential high-capacity racing coasters including Racer 75 (formerly Rebel Yell) at Kings Dominion and Gemini at Cedar Point, The Racer has also been the site of several world-record riding attempts and is notable for its appearance in the “Cincinnati Kids” episode of The Brady Bunch, filmed at the park in 1973. In 1982, one side of The Racer was transformed into the world’s first full-length, backwards traveling roller coaster, offering a unique ride experience that lasted for 26 seasons.
The Racer was the first roller coaster structurally build on the ground with prefabricated sections lifted into position and bolted. It was billed as the most spectacular, longest, fastest and highest leading up to its opening, and the largest that John Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company had built. He considered The Racer to be the finest roller coaster he ever built. And, he built a lot of them!

This ride is still awesome! It's probably the most underrated ride in the park, I don't think enough people talk about how great the airtime is on this! I especially love the blue side and I try to ride it every time I visit the park.

You're so right! I actually prefer Racer over Orion for this specific reason; amazing ejector and floater airtime! Orion has the speed but it isn't as fun as this
I've ridden this ride nearly 800 times now and I love it so much. It's so beautiful and is such an overall great vibe :)
I've ridden coasters all over the country and Racer is STILL my #1! Nothing beats the immense joy I feel every time! 💜

That the right word to use when you ride this delightful coaster. Joy! I used to feel that same pure delightful joy when I would ride Colossus. I love how it still races too! Good job on Kings Island for taking good care of this icon. I wish Magic Mountian had done the same for the original Colossus. I miss it but I do love Twisted Colossus. But still I wish I could go back in time. The Racer gave that feeling like I was riding Colossus.
The coaster that saved coasters... The retracking and nice paint have given it new life and I love riding this even to today
I love this rides airtime and that it is family friendly but still packs a thrill!

Honestly, this coaster is amazing and one of my favorites. Such an underrated gem that packs some of the best airtime in the world into a simple out-and-back layout. Kudos to Kings Island for keeping this ride running so well!

At 12 years old I overcame my fear of roller coasters on this ride! After that I rode every single coaster in the park at that time.
I went to King’s island today. I started off by going on The Beast, Diamondback, and then Orion. I then went on the racer and I didn’t think it would be that good but dang, it was awesome.

As a kid, my friend and I would go to Kings Island all the time with the summer pass and ride the racers over and over because the lines were small and moved fast. We would always sit in the back and try to stand/crouch the whole ride, by either pushing our feet up when they locked the bar, or just sliding out from under it and almost Standing. We would do it right as it crested the first hill. They stopped it before the top once to admonish us over the speakers to sit down. Same thing with The Beast too that same day, but we knew to take our hands down and sit down for the tunnels. surprised we didn't get kicked out of the park some days. Good times.

The wooden coasters are the best coasters at kings island since kings island is the wooden roller coaster capital of the world and this is coming from someone who has ridden every coaster at the park even the great pumpkin coaster

My brother and I rode this roller coaster in 2001 when we were in Ohio on vacation. The red car was running backwards.

It’s nice to see this coaster get some TLC. Now all it needs is larger headrests to support my 6/7 body. I love this ride though and I admit that it’s nice that my height gives me an unobstructed view regardless of where I sit :).

Same. Ki is my home park. Always will have a soft spot for Racer bc it was my first coaster outside kiddyland

Did you know the only reason Red Racer doesn’t run backwards anymore is one because it was bad for the track. Number two Philadelphia Toboggan Company or PTC threatened to not give Kings Island anymore parts for the Racer if they kept running it backwards.

This is my second favorite ride at kings island but yeah I agree lol
I went on it like a week ago and it was actually pretty fun but I got scared because it was my first time on a roller coaster with hills then I rode misstic timbers and then I rode flight to fear

Even though I hated this ride the last time I rode it, I don’t see this ride needing the RMC treatment. KI just needs to keep it smooth. Leave the RMC for where Vortex used to be.

It can't happen because it wasn't designed to go backwards and the manufacturer of the ride threatened to stop supplying parts to ki if they continued to run it backwards

It's a great fun coaster, however I recommend Non-wheel seats since the return leg can get a little Jackhammer-y

I was there when the fireworks happened, worst idea to ride it as my last ride. We get to the front and were about to go on and they ask "is it ok if these kids ride before you then we'll get you on?" and were like sure. NOPE they shut down the ride for the next HOUR OR TWO and we leave. Worst ending ever.

They shut it down around 9:30 and reopen it around 10:30 for the people still waiting because of how close it goes to the firework launch site and the drones just in case something were to happen they don't want people to get hurt

I just rode this delighful coaster last weekend. It reminded me of Colossus only not as tall. I loved how it made that same zipping roar as the train flew over the tracks. All the sudden it’s 1982 again. Makes me miss the original Colossus
Got to ride the blue side and red side this year. Both are amazing! Can’t believe it’s been 50 years! ❤️

@@boyjimini11 over the years before the 50th anniversary stuff happened, the blue side was smoother, and the red side was bumpier. But they fixed the issues for the 50th anniversary
