The Race to Build Hypersonic Missiles | WSJ U.S. vs. China

The U.S. and China are developing hypersonic missiles, hard-to-detect weapons that can reach at least five times the speed of sound.
WSJ compares the missiles’ design differences as the race to test and deploy them changes the global balance of military power.

Hypersonic Missile development is seriously hampered without an appropriate HS wind tunnel. The US has not yet figured out how to make one while China is building a second Mach 30 windtunnel. The HS windtunnel is in itself a very complex technology generating wind speed at Mach 5 to Mach 30 with the ability to adjust the speed on the flight. You need to keep the HS missile stationary for meaningful measurements, so you can collect data for a range of functions, including aerodynamics, performance of sensors at 2000+ Degrees Centigrade and the effect of plasma on electronic communication. You can not do it effectively while the missile is going at Mach 5+ in flight. The failure of US HS tests is closely related to its lack of a suitable HS windtunnel.

Which means China has a much complete system than the USA China's hypersonic missile like the DF-21D, DF-26. YJ-21 (ship and air launched) has anti-ship capabilities. The US has yet to demonstrate such capabilities. People are used to have America leading, but gradually, in all sectors, China is closing the gap and in some areas have surpassed America.

The Chinese hypersonic missile do not have scram jet technology. The US does not just want to throw something and say hey we did it! We want to do it right. Just letting you know there are many things out there such as space x’s space rockets which hit hyper sonic speeds 🙂. Many other things out there already go at hypersonic speeds. The Russian hypersonic missile is just an old Soviet era rocket that just goes fast! The US wants to develop a hypersonic weapon but we care more about the future and how we can keep using it. Of course we need more funding for the facilities to test and create them.

It is also important to think about how military placement affects the necessity for these missiles. The Unites States has their Navy as well as military placed all over the globe, and are able to quickly mobilize to places like Asia in an instant. China on the other hand would mostly rely on longer range combat if a major war ever broke out, as due to their geographic region, China is navally confined to a very limited area. In addition, China has a poorly developed air force, ESPECIALLY compared to the United States. I'm not saying it isn't necessary for the US to develop these weapons, but the situations of both countries is certainly different

The United States possesses several energy weapons that can easily defeat these incoming missiles, provided they are powered up and ready to deployed prior to an enemy missile launch. The reason the US has resumed development of these weapons, which it abandoned in the late 1950's is simply for offense as the enemies systems are slowly getting better at defense. This is why the only real talk in US circles about defending from these weapons is about devolving command and control, so defensive meassures can be deployed immediately, without asking for permission up the chain of command and not about developing or buying new weapons systems.

China has several HS missile models, DF-17, YJ-21, DF-21D, DF-26 and the latest and most lethal hypersonic glider missle, the DF-27. In 2017 China built a Mach 10 hypersonic missile windtunnel. Just months ago China finished building a Mach 30 windtunnel. Many people many not appreciate that HS windtunnel technology is every bit as complex as the hypersonic missiles! To generate wind velocity at Mach 30 you need sustained and smoothed out EXPLOSIONS !! You can imagine the complexity. But China has successfully overcomed the technology difficulties. The US failed the lastest hs missile test in June 2022 and has been quite since. The key reason why the uS failed several time on HS missile tests is because without a modern HS windtunnel, you can not perform any meaningful tests and collect high quality operational data. If you use a 50 year old wind tunnel, it is not going to give you the best test data you need. If you drop it from a Bomber, how do you track and make measurements of in-flight operational parameters? I believe the US is at least 5 years behind China in HS missile technology. The ability for the US to win the Taiwan war against China is severely restricted.

Race? What race? The DF-17 went into service in 2019. China's hypersonic missiles have been operational for a while now. Russia too has hypersonics. Reportedly, NK too. The fact is America is desperately trying to play catch up. But American msm spin is always something to behold, and increasingly amusing.

No tax means no public healthcare, poor infrastructure, aging military, government shutdowns, wealth inequality and more crime. When was the last time you heard a drug epidemic, gun violence or endless wars abroad from China? They used the time build themselves up and now as the West is pushing them, they are ready to push back. China has matched or surpassed the US in most tech aspects, plus they have a huge work force and stable governance. Yes, they have their own failings but not in the areas you mentioned.

Most people need infrastructure and not weapons. US as a very innovative society is best placed to assist many countries solve some of their problems. But they are not doing any of these. The New Arms Race is both high-power laser weapons and hypersonic missiles. The only way to stop hypersonic missiles flying in the sky is to use high-power laser weapons from space satellites weapons, military planes, naval ships, and on the ground to shoot to destroy them. Laser light travels so many times faster than any hypersonic missile. Hypersonic missiles which are traveling a few times faster than the speed of sound, can be detected, tracked, calculated, and identified by high-tech radars and space satellites with supercomputers due to so much heat generated behind and a lot of heat at the noses of the flying hypersonic missiles and can be shot down by laser weapons.

I have as yet to hear what the advantage of a ultra fast rocket other than "slower missiles are easier to track and shoot down" but the efficacy of anti missile defense is only 30-70%. So sending more of the slower cheeper missiles seems to get the job done (hitting target) without investing in the, so far, dubious advantage of hypersonic. Regarding ICBMs, they are already hypersonic and there are no good defenses against them.
