    Another awesome interview and frankly as a muslim revert I find that there's no comparison between Christianity and Islam when it comes to being sound in both history and theology. Still to each his own. In a way I'm glad I wasn't born muslim and had the chance to scrutinize Islam before I wholeheartedly accepted it. Alhamdulillah I haven't looked back since. Plus the quran continues to put everything into perspective.

    How did you scrutinize Islam? Do you believe in the entire standard Islamic narrative: Mecca, Muhammad from Mecca, Revelation, Medina, the Quran? I find there to be a somewhat of a disconnect between the Quran, which talks about places and people around the dead sea, but generally everything about historical stories, places, and events is kind of vague, and Mecca and Muhammad are barely mentioned, and the Hadiths, according to which Mecca and Muhammad and Medina are introduced, and basically the story is shifted thousand kilometers south, and suddenly everything revolves around that alleged storyline.

    @@tombuddy100 well you see the quran for me is revelation for human beings to follow through till you pass away and that's what resonates with me. The quran gives questions and then asks you to think about what is being said. When I said historically sound I meant that the narrative of the quran and the Hadith has more consistency than compared with the bible and the writings of the patristics. Basing the basic Islamic teachings it actually tells me that there is a god. Unfortunately I don't think that any other teachings which claim to be from the creator of mankind except maybe Judaism but I find that Islam is the most consistent when compared with Islam. When you say a huge disconnect what is it that you based that disconnect off? When I started learning about Islam I did mistakes myself. Especially when it came to the historical and theological parts. Maybe you can explain more about the points you said are disconnected. I'll be glad to help but I'm no expert. In the case I have no knowledge about what you ask then you should continue your journey by seeking knowledge with those who have that correct knowledge.

    "if we know more about the Quran..." you can't put the Quran under the same textual criticism as the Bible's manuscripts - it is primarily preserved through memorization. Manuscripts are a secondary method and wouldn't affect the primary method. If the manuscripts had errors, that would be corrected through the original preservation method which is memorization, just like when someone recites the Quran in prayer and makes a mistake, you'll find someone who'd correct them if they mispronounced a single letter.

    if you cant do that ( the same criticism ) , then why mohamed asked to have it in 7 dialects and afterwords distroyed by uthman to only quraish , if the second method wouldnt affect the first one. and if it was not nesecarry ( to have it written ) then why send 5 copys to the big citys. Where is one of those copys , one of those soooooooo important books to demonstrate the people how allah could preserve them ??? all you can come up with is some fragments ( are you kidding ). Just ask yourself !!!!!!! if allah is all knowing then why would mohamed ask for the different dialects to jabriel and why didnt allah said the first time to jabriel when he brought down de recitaitions that there will be different dialects ( some mayor important point if you ask me ) ??? Also your book says different times that mohamed is just a messenger !!! then why would mohamed go up and discus with the all knowing allah on how many times they have to pray , and he went up several times from50 prays to 45 to 40 to 35 and so on untill 5. didnt allah know that ??????????? And also the writing has nothing to do with the dialect, in the time of mohamed there where only 16 letters and no dots and vows ( those came way after the dead of mohamed ), dont you think that is strange that allah didnt know that. i have read somewere that there are more then 100 non arabic words in the quran , isnt that strange that allah wouldnt know that. but you didnt tell me where we can find the oldest complete quran????

    Thank you, Paul. A good, honest, nuanced, educative, and fascinating dialogue. Reasonable discourse par excellence. Interesting that our hero Thomas Aquinas says, in the Summa Contra Gentiles, that Christians should not barely "quote scripture" at Muslims (since Muslims don't accept the authority of Christian scripture) but rather engage in reasonable, rational discourse. "In addressing Muslims, therefore, one must 'have recourse to the natural reason, to which all men are forced to give their assent' or 'moral and philosophical reasons which the Muslims can accept'. Since Muslims do not accept the Christian Scriptures, one should not quote them uselessly" (Joseph Ellul, "Thomas Aquinas and Muslim-Christian Dialogue", in ANGELICUM 80, 2003.)

    Radiocarbon dating relies on reference samples. Trees are often used as sample references as the tree rings from very, very old trees can give us accurate radiocarbon atmospheric levels for hundreds of years. Other references are also used, and because oceans can trap carbon there are differences between references in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Okay so the upshot is that the accuracy of dating depends on these reference samples and these references are constantly updated and there are often recalibrations. In general the error can be on the order of 20 years. So not only the animal was killed later but that then the skin was used for writing later again. Hope this helps in understanding how radiocarbon dating dates samples and gives a date range which represents the variation in the reference samples carbon levels.

    Dear father David Thomas, I found it very perplexing to my deep intelligence, that you seem to be very erudite and educated, and know much about Islam, and obviously possessing superior knowledge about Christianity, yet you would choose Christianity over Islam. I wish you spoke Arabic, and what I come to know about the Qur'an and its contents is dazzling, psychologically, factually, and every other humanistic discipline that we know of, even some of the verses which are negatively quoted by the detractors or those who are so staunch polemics of that religion, I found them to be so useful to a refined human existence.

    Mr. Williams or Bother Paul (I am not sure what do you prefer), I have been following your channel for a few months and I am thoroughly impressed by your study as well as interviewing skills. I would like to make a few points in particular, 1) Mr. Thomas is a well respected academic but is also the reason why there's what some might call a growing rift between believing Christians and Muslims. How can they come closer and form stronger ties when eminent scholars don't even believe in Prophecy of Muhammad? I mean he politely put Muhammad in the same club as Nelson Mandela with no disrespect to Mr. Mandela. 2) To Muslims, Muhammad (PBUH) is not just a prophet but has a more elevated status as a Messenger and one who is taken as a friend by Allah besides Ibrahim (Abraham). 3) In Quran, Jesus (Isa ibn Mariam) also has an elevated status. He's not same as Jacob, David or Solomon. He's the promised Messiah to the Israelite, born to Mariam (who is announced as the chosen one as well as the most blessed of all women) and Quran notes that Jesus is given the knowledge of the scripture (Quran), Torah and Bible. He's also the most important eschatological figure as symbolized by Quran and noted by Nabi Muhammad. One of the signs of Qiyamah is that son of Mary will return. Most Christians aren't aware that Muslims believe in this or that they are "also" waiting for the Messiah to return. 4) You have noted many times that most Muslims have never read the Bible and most Christians have never read Quran. I cannot speak for Christians but I can tell you that most Muslims I know have never read (understood) the Quran either. They choose to continue to recite it in Arabic without ever getting their hands on a translation that they can understand or comprehend (majority of Muslims today are not Arabic speaking). They also do not understand what Christian Trinity is and what it stands for. 5) I also find that most of my Christian friends have no research of their own, they are taught Jesus is God from the cradle and is what is reinforced at their local church. There's false information everywhere. Add to that those are brainwashed in Muslim camps and the situation gets far worse. 6) Eminent scholar Imran Hosein has done a lot of work educating Muslim masses about Christian doctrine. He is also the most prominent scholar of Islamic eschatology (to my knowledge). He has spoken numerous times about return of Isa and what this means for Muslims at the end of time (prepare to be surprised, his belief isn't the popular Muslim belief). His channel is: kzread.info. Perhaps you can invite him for a one on one, I am certain it would make for an enlightening discussion amongst the two of you. Keep up your fantastic work educating the masses and may God be on your side in your quest for knowledge and the truth. I wish the same for everyone who has the thirst.

    And as you said the Quran is a recitation, and was transmitted as a recitation. A fragment no matter how old it is still a piece of paper , or lethear on which text is written by an unknown scribe,. Unless we know for sure who wrote it.

  • @faraz2498
    @faraz24983 жыл бұрын

    This is the problem of western scholars examining the preservation of the Quran. They fail to consider the context of 7th century Arabia and the oral culture and method of transmission. The Quran's primary means of preservation is verbal transmission with isnad (chain of narration) and as such it is muttawatir, ie. the chains of corroborating narrations are too numerous for it to be anything but authentic. So the manuscript is secondary. In fact the Quran is first a recital and then it is Kitab, book. Of course it is wonderful to find manuscripts from this era, and strengthens the case for the authenticity of the Quran from the western paradigm. But from a Muslim perspective we have our own science of authentication and more importantly (from a faith perspective) a promise within the Quran itself that it will be preserved.

    Right from the days of prophet Muhammad sws there were always thousands and thousands of Muslims who kept Quraan by heart at all times and passed on to the descendants till date. We can test the texts of Quraan now in different parts of the world. If they are all similar even after more than 14 centuries we can conclude that it is intact without a shadow of doubt.

    The authenticity and fidelity of the Quran comes from the memorized version, not by the written text. The Prophet (pbuh) was made to memorize the entire Quran by Archangel Jibrael over a period of 23 years (around 609 AD to 632 AD), and the Prophet in turn had lot of his companions memorize the Quran too. The Quran was written in bit and pieces on parchments, leather, wood, leaves, cloth etc. even when the Prophet was alive. Fearing that the loss of many reciters of the Quran in the battlefield would jeopardize the existence of the Quran, the first Caliph Abu Bakr (pbuh) has ordered compiling of the Quran soon after death of the Prophet (pbuh). The compiling continued during time of the second Caliph Omar (pbuh) and finally the standardized written version of the Quran was completed by the third Caliph Osman (pbuh). Throughout the Islamic history the Muslim relied more on the memorized version (which is always accurate and authentic) than the written version. When there is a discrepancy, the memorized version over-rides after it is verified by more than one reciters.
