The Quixsum Fractional Adding Machine

The Quixsum Fractional Adding Machine is an adding machine for lengths in feet, inches, and fractions of an inch. It was made in 1924. It is very rare as only about 600 were ever made.
Stephen Freeborn has a nice video of it too:

Please consider acquiring a set of hollow ground screw driver tools for use with slotted screw heads. I really appreciate your videos: informative, detailed, and instructive in regards to user operations and mechanics of the internal mechanism. Thank you. There are good references in Garage Journal: hollow-ground-screwdrivers

I’ve always loved the look of this thing but they’re so expensive! Thanks-

Things you don't need with the metric system. But I love it!

It’s a big device. What’s crazy it that with our crazy imperial system it’s actually helpful too.

Also, good job on the serial numbering. I had no idea so few were made.

That is one of the most beautiful wheel type machines I've seen Jaap - I bet you were pleased to add that one to the collection. I would say I'll keep my eye open for one, but I doubt I'll ever find one. Great to see it all the same.

Yes, I was very pleased to win this auction. It was not cheap - 321 Euro plus postage - but probably a reasonable price given its rarity. It is a very classy machine. Made by an architect for architects and similar professionals.

That thing is awesome. Should’ve called it the Carpenter’s Friend, would’ve increased sales.

Very interesting! But it shows to what lengths Americans will go instead of using the decimal metric system 😅

When you want to have such a machine for the metric system, then it would be very much like the adder unit of the Schickard calculator from 1623, which was based on decimal numbers and also had a tens-carry-mechanism.
