In the news earlier this week, the City of San Francisco plans to celebrate Linda Ronstadt's 78th birthday by dedicating a special day in her name. "The city supervisors formalized the declaration on Tuesday, July 9, making Monday, July 15, officially 'Linda Ronstadt Day.'" (San Francisco Chronicle, July 8, 2024) The group of musicians Linda Ronstadt brought together for her eponymous third album included several future members of The Eagles -- Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner, and Don Henley. It was during the recording sessions for that album that they discovered how well they gelled together. For a treat from that record, check out "Rock Me on the Water", with Glenn Frey on guitar and Don Henley on drums, as they cover the Jackson Browne classic.

Don Henley suggested to Linda that she record Desperado because it was a good song but didn’t get good airplay and he thought she could make s hit out of it. She did and it was! Mick Jagger changed his song Tumbling Dice for her to sing and she recorded it and rocked his tune. He voice is the most powerful and beautiful at the same time! She will be 78 soon!!

Glenn Frey and Don Henley both credit Linda's cover of this song as being the catalyst that shot the Eagles to stardom. It appeared on the Eagles first album in 1973 and on Linda's fourth album, also in 1973. Her version got the most airplay and people got curious about the writers and their band.

The two Eagles’ names are pronounced as DON HEN LEE and GLEN FRY. Thank you. This is my favorite song that she sang. I saw her live onstage in the seventies at Pine Knob, an outdoor theater in Michigan. She could sing in tune with NO Instrumental help. What an incredible voice. It’s so sad that she can’t sing anymore.

As far as I know, the main song writers in the Eagles were Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Timothy B. Schmidt wrote at least one and Joe Walsh wrote a few. The Eagles had working relationships with Jackson Browne and JD Souther, who both helped them write. In the original incarnation of the Eagles, I think Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner did some writing, as well.

I would listen to Linda Ronstadt sing the dictionary. She is so talented. Even though this was an Eagles song, it wasn’t charting until Linda sang it, and it’s been a hit for the Eagles ever since. She has recorded in English and Spanish, in pop, rock, soul and marachi genres. She also actually founded the Eagles in a way because she gathered them as her backing band for a tour, introducing Don Henley and Glen Frey to each other and then encouraged them to go out and form their own band because they were so good together. As for the Eagles, they all were songwriters, though Henley and Frey wrote more than others.

The main songwriters in the Eagles were Don Henley, who happened to major in English and Glenn Frey, pronounced Fry. Their songwriting was off the chart. Listen to Hotel California's lyrics. Very hard to figure out exactly what was going on or what they're talking about, but it become abundantly clear that the entire song was about the California music industry. that attracted talented musicians back in the 70's mainly. Listen to it from that point of view and it becomes abundantly clear. Don slipped in a nod out to Steely Dan with the lyrics they stabbed it with their steely knives but they just cant kill the beast. Notice Don wrote steely, not the normal steel knives. Brilliant. Listen to the lyrics of One of These Nights. Incredible lyrics.

Linda was pretty much responsible for creating the Eagles. After the breakup of The Stone Pony's, she was putting together a new backup band for her up coming solo album. She hired Glen Fry and Don Henley and they worked for her for a couple of years. They told Linda they were thinking of forming their own band and she said she would help them. Through her then boyfriend, JD Souther, she got them together with Randy Meisner, then Bernie Leadon. They became the founding members of the Eagles. Listen to the YT video of Glen and Don tell about it when they inducted Linda into the RRHOF. She had another band member, her guitar player Andrew Gold, who wanted to try recording solo. She helped him with that, and he ended up writing 2 hits, Thank You For Being A Friend(Yes that one from the Golden Girls) and Lonely Boy.
