The Queen Mary Tour - Overview of Ship/Hotel in Long Beach, California

I stayed on The Queen Mary before going on a cruise out of Long Beach, California. This video tour of Queen Mary shows most of the public spaces as well as my stateroom which was a Deluxe Stateroom.
Some of the spaces were closed during the time of the recording so I was not able to film every area. Hopefully this overview video will give you an idea what it's like to be on this magnificent ship.

I was a war baby born in England in 1945 to a Canadian soldier and his English bride. When they brought the soldiers home, Mom and I came over to Canada in August 1946 on the Queen Mary. I still have the immigration landing card at Halifax stamped the Queen Mary. I have visited the Queen Mary several times on visits to LA. It never fails to fascinate me. Too bad the promenade bar was closed as it was the best part of the ship.

In 2011 my wife and I rode our motor cycle out to see the Queen Mary. We took 2 of those guided tours, had a lunch in one of the cafes, then took the tour of the Marine park, like Sea world. By your that time it was 3pm & I hadn't even toured the ship yet, so I asked the wife, do you want to spend the night? She looked at me with big eyes, are you serious? Yep!! So we got a 2 port hole starboard side state room over looking the harbor. The wife took a nap, chronic fatigue syndrome, while I walked all over the ship. She called me when she woke up. I retrieved her & we went to a nice on board restaurant. The hostess asked if we had reservation's, ah no. Oops big mistake on my part, so she asked if I wanted to make one, well YA! OK, 9pm she says. Oh boy, it's only 6pm, so I took the wife to all of the places I'd looked at. We had a great meal @ 9pm. Then back to our room & to bed. This was Saturday, so Sunday morning we hear about this Sunday brunch in the first class dinning salon. I asked at the front desk. It was a little to pricey for me so I said we'd check out, to which the lady says, oh you stayed with us last night, then the brunch is half price, still a little steep but hey you only go around once, so we did it. Great vacation memories!!! I'd like to do it again someday.

I’ve done a couple visits to the QM, one in 1974 then again in 2006 and enjoyed them both. It’s interesting to compare the original with the QM2 which I’ve sailed on, on four occasions. I must admit the QM2 decor wise is much more pleasing on the eye, though there is lots of wood, it’s so much brighter and spacious, the cabins with their modern furnishings give you much more feeling of space, also helped by having balconies which give the rooms so much more natural light. It’s a bit like comparing chalk and cheese when touring both liners, but the grandure of the old Mary has a lovely feel about it, however when sailing across the pond I know which liner I’d prefer to be on, yep, the QM2.

I wonder if the Olympic and Mauretania were scrapped because of the Great Depression. So many were sad to see them go, including President Roosevelt. I know the idea of preserving ships probably wasn't as prominent because they needed more and newer ones out of necessity. But I wonder if they were at all considered to be saved. Was that done at all back in the day when ships were the only way to cross?

What an interesting and well done tour you gave, even if brief! My late father was one of the American troops who rode “the gray ghost” to Europe during the Second World War, and I grew up hearing stories of his experiences while crossing on the Queen. Because of the vast number of soldiers crossing on each trip, the passengers were limited to staying in certain areas, to not upset the balance of the ship (failure to comply could result in time spent in the brig, or she ship’s jail!), so my dad would have enjoyed seeing this (and other) tours on KZread that exhibited the parts of the vessel that he had missed. At any rate, I have enjoyed seeing them on his (and on my own) behalf. Thank you for taking the time to make and post this, and I hope that you enjoyed your cruise! : )

Then to coast to board small boat. He said they didn't know where they were going. Soon though the small boat docked along side Queen Mary. He said he had never seen anything so big. Got chance over NYE 2019. Only stayed one night before heading to Catalina. Was great experience. Clean quiet room, loved the deco. Limited dining over holidays but still had grand time. Looking forward to going again. FYI inspoted to visit this website today while watching episode of Scorpion, they did show on board.

Went on this amazing ship during Christmas time of 2017 and it had a lot of paint work being done. Half of the ship was painted and the back wasn’t! Had a very fun time exploring the ship and idk why people say it’s haunted when I never got that feeling on the Queen Mary.

SS Normandie caught fire in NY while being converted to a Troup ship. She couldn't be saved so she was scrapped. Still today, The Normandie is considered the most beautiful liner ever built.

I'm pretty sure there is a model of the Titanic there too, it had two grand staircases. One is only three decks towards the stern, and the six deck staircase between the first two funnels.

4:26 there’s a wood panel there in some of the rooms that slides up to hide where the porthole is (they might be really dusty because apparently the hotel doesn’t know about em)

Facts about the queen Mary : At 1018 feet long and more than 81,000 tons, the Queen Mary was one of the largest ships ever built at the time, second only to the French liner Normandie. (Titanic, by comparison, was only 883 feet long and about 46,000 tons.) Queen Mary's rudder, at 150 tons, was then the largest ever built. The queen Mary ship was a sister of the RMS Titanic

A little wrong with the relationship between Titanic and Queen Mary. The Titanics only sister ships were Britannic and Olympic. After Cunard combined with the White Star Line, they created new ships, Queen Mary being one of them. If anything, Queen Mary is like a distant relative or neice to the Titanic

I saw the ship as a kid... July 4th. Night time. And it was kind of scary. Lol... this is the 80s. So the ship looked the same but different since it was so long ago. But I never knew it was haunted. Maybe that's why I was scared lol idk. It was just a huuuuuuuge ship. Overwhelming to me

My compliments to your videography and commentary which stayed on point and didn't needlessly meander. Like you, I, too, love history, and it's somewhat disappointing to see the 1930s art deco interior clashing with the generic modernity of a Starbucks shop. Interestingly, some scenes from the film _The Aviator,_ the Howard Hughes biopic directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, were filmed aboard the Queen Mary because it's one of the few places in Los Angeles that still has that classic 1930s vibe to it. Specifically, there was a scene filmed in the Observation Bar, and another filmed in the First Class Main Lounge.

If you get the chance, navigate your way down to the museum in the forward part of the ship after taking the Glory Days tour. The museum is in the former third class lounge, and the difference in ceiling height between classes is quite noticeable.

She is back in city hands now and closed for critical repairs that leasers did not take care of. We stayed on her in the 80s for two nights when Disney was managing her. Booked an original first class stateroom and enjoyed it so much we decided to book another night. The 2nd room we got was some sort of weird remodeled interior space. 95 degrees and no thermostat!! I went back to the desk, and after some friendly persuasion they gave us the Winston Churchill Suite! The Queen is a one of a kind treasure and we need to take better care of her or loose her forever.
