Actually, S1, 2 and 3 were all 160hp (UK / Euro spec) and the S3 was not turbocharged, but was the later 2174cc engine (along with the last 46 S2's that got the 2.2 litre motor, named S2.2), The Turbo was turbocharged, originally to 210hp S1 & 2 shared the same rear suspension based on Chapmans minimum component theory, where the fixed length driveshaft formed the upper link, S3 onwards changed to plunging driveshafts with CV joints, and got unequal length upper and lower links, along with the softer engine & gearbox mounts that setup allowed. Just sayin.

She is a beauty, well restored and maintained. Seriously exotic. Great videography 👍 That is the car of my dreams in the sense that I want that aesthetic, an S2 or S3- but in a restomod form that is a reliable daily driver. Like dropping a Toyota V6 or EcoBoost type Turbo 4 in it. Hey, a man can dream.

Looks to me as though they've done something with the suspension though. I don't think they were as low as that or had so much negative camber originally.

I own an 1980 esprit S2.2 and although it isn't quick compared to today's standards, it isn't a slough either. The UK cars had twin dellorto' carbs and better sportier camshafts compared to the US versions. Also the S2.2 (only 88 were made with its 2.2l engine) although also only having 160hp, had a much torquier engine. With the dellorto carbs it really reacts swift to the pedal. It is easy to get more hp out of the engine with some old school tuning . Having in and outletports ported, having a free flowing exhaust, combine that with other carb jetting and a more free flowing airfilter and you really feel the car live up. Nothing like what I see with the car in the video.

I may go for a s3 NA soon. I think that may be the best model for me. I'm in Sweden and the roads near me in the forest are tight and windy plus l drive swiftly but nothing crazy so maybe the turbo is not necessary. Plus on the motorway l never really drive more than 150 kmh anyway.

PS, interesting that this car, which looks very very nice, and appears to have all the correct livery of the limited 'Commemorative Edition' JPS S2, doesn't bare the official lorels badge with number (104 made I think), so it's a sort of copy / homage to that limited edition car.

Nice review! These cars really need a turbo Honda K20 with about 450hp, a Porsche 6 speed gearbox, bigger/better wheels and tires, upgraded HVAC system and brakes. Then it would perform as well as it looks.

Do you have the skill to do this work . I would Not butcher my 1977 Esprit S1 in Calypso Red with White full leather interior. But I would consider buying and Esprit in need of work. And You can do a Honda K20 with a Porsche transaxle. Of course you would be compensated for your skills.

Clavey...Chapman was not a smoker. At the Ketteringham hall design center, he had the window sills built at angles so the employees couldn't put cigarettes on them. Saying he was a smoker and hence wanted lighters and ashtrays in the Esprit is just ridiculous. Sorry. Otherwise, great video

the S1 and S2 Esprit's with Dellorto carbs have 160 hp. The Stromberg equipped cars only had 140 hp. It makes a big difference when you drive one.

Re positioning of pedals, different story on the Elite Type 75a and Type 83, being offset to the right hand side by a significant margin with the clutch pedal a great deal heavier than that on a Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS

The constraint that lotus had was the lack of gearboxes that could handle that lotus could generate from their engines. 0-60 isn’t a good measure of the performance drive it back to back on a twisty road with with peers of its age and it makes them feel stodgy, sloppy and slow….
