they were young: and competition was still fairly competitive, supposedly.... but they apparently paid-it-no-mind, haha

i think the vocalist creates a lot of the deep atmospherics; such a delicious voice and then i think the fact that they don't try to be technical wizzards but instead let the songs breathe and be quite minimal in many ways is what makes their songs so great/

The mysterious lyric was written by Richard Butler, after his girlfriend of the time moved to Italy. "Instead of saying 'my bird's gone to Italy and I miss her,' I tried to put over the feeling of being sad and low with images," he explained, a device which works perfectly. Against the band's slowly, darkly percolating rhythm, Butler's performance is a masterpiece of understatement, whispered intimacy rendered all the more effective by the instructions he was given by producer Steve Lillywhite: "he told me, 'go down the pub, have a couple of beers, and when you come back, I want you to sing like it's three in the morning, and you're talking on the telephone to someone.'" --AllMusic

I started listening to bands like the Psychedelic's and The English Beat way back in the late 70's because I just couldn't stand another 20 minute guitar solo, I just couldn't do it...Punk came out at the right moment. Yes I dug it too, everyone was waiting for this sound. Thank God it came when it did...

Came here from my Ex ty Steve .. his introducing me to the greatest music in my life ... and this song is in cold case S5 E 10 by Duran Duran Till the mornin after , and God Bless the Psychedelic Furs for saving my mind !

This is devilishly catchy

I just found this song, while searçhing you tube for some new music I would like, and I hit paydirt!! Sounds so good. Whats weird is none of these guys had any musical training, they just did it. Sometimes that is the best way to do it.

A song like no other. A truly great one.

Nice horn section really adds to this. But it is the riff here. A Fantastic riff.

Fun fact, Robert Smith of the cure loved these guys so much that his song " cattepillar girl", he says was inspired by Richard butler.

Binge-reading Bret Easton Ellis & wanted an ambient 80s soundtrack; this came on old Spotify playlist shuffle & I was thrilled to rediscover a gem outside of my typical/done-2-death 80s stuff. Clutch addition to that ambient 80s vibe; feels like something his characters would be playing while being rich, morally bankrupt brats! AKA a glamorous & well-funded drug den. High end drugs & everything else, of course 😉

The greatest compliment I could ever give... This could be a Roxy Music track. Superb album, sadly, a standard not to be repeated

I went to the closest record store & actually found the cassette in a bargain bin.

Love them. I remember a concert of theirs years ago in Boston at the Orpheum, and they were great.

Their best album. Velvet U, Roxy Music with their own touch. Souvenirs...
