I do like PRS guitars.. However, I feel that the Gibson Les-Paul has a superior action and tonal quality. Mary, You are a superb artist. I feel if you really gave the 1957 reissue Gibson Les-Paul a chance, it would unlock your inner soul.

@@markjarrett6587 Ya know Mark, I do both, I have a wonderful Les Paul Custom and a 15 year-old SG '61 reissue, and they both play wonderfully and sound great. But someone asked me, if I was to endorse any guitar-builder, who would it be and I had to admit it would be PRS. I don't think anyone outside of maybe the really expensive boutiques are making better playing and sounding guitars. They look nice, too.

MarcoPinn I’m not sure if an open ended question without an answer in a thumbnail is considered clickbait. Clickbait is getting someone to view based on a false thumbnail. For example have you ever seen an animal attack video where a thumbnail has blood everywhere and two animals are photoshopped to look like they’re fighting - and the video has 15M views? Then the video is a pretty standard animal posturing fight? Weird example, I know. But if she left the answer out of the thumbnail she would definitely still be reviewing and talking about the PRS SS...

The first guitar I remember picking up in a music store as an adult was, oddly enough, a PRS Artist model, way back in 1990. I was a novice guitarist, but my father had played for years, and I was in the process of switching from keyboards to guitars in my band. My father actually offered to buy the PRS for me, but I deferred, unable to justify the expense (at the time ~$1500) when I was, after all, but a novice. He ended up buying me an amp, instead, and I borrowed a guitar from him. A year later, I bought myself a brand new Rickenbacker 330 that is still my main guitar, today, 29 years later. But that PRS has always stuck in my mind. It was so comfortable, that I felt like the guitar could actually play itself. 30 years later, I still do not actually own a PRS, but I hope that someday I will. Whenever I happen to be in a music shop, I cannot resist trying out a PRS, if they have one. Stars know I've spent enough money on music gear over the past three decades that I should have bought one by now! PRS Guitars makes without a doubt, some of the finest electric guitars that have ever been made, and my favorites are not the outrageously expensive models, but the more plebian, the CE22 is actually my favorite of them all. They will always be a good investment, and always be desirable. They really are that good.

I love 7.25” radius fingerboards on Fenders. Especially as a primarily rhythm player they’re just so amazingly comfortable. 😍 It frustrates me how few Fender guitars are made now with this fingerboard radius option. I find it especially sad that the American Original range, which is meant to be the vintage inspired range which replaced the American Vintage a few years ago, dropped the 7.25” radius in favour of 9.5”. Even most Custom Shop “reissues” are now 9.5”. Come on Fender, leave at least some options for us who prefer the vintage radius without having to go to the eye-watering cost of a Custom Shop special order! 😡

The problem with companies like PRS is their price. If the silver sky is their affordable model and its still £2300, thats ridiculous. Id rather get a player and customise it, and still come out with change. I dont think PRS will dethrone fender any time soon.

You're comparing apples and oranges though. The Silver Sky is not their "affordable model" for those you need to look at SE or S2 models. The Silver Sky is of a similar quality to a Fender CS. When you compare it to those, suddenly it's actually not such a bad comparison.

Playing a 7.25 radius neck drastically improved my bending consistency and stability but I also noticed that having such a rounded radius requires a precision fret level as well as a very good fret finish, or you'll end up choking out note bends. I've only ever played a Silversky once, unplugged, but it's easy to tell that they made sure to get that 100% right. I currently own two strats, a vintage competition mustang, a jazzmaster, and Jaguar - all with the 7.25 neck. It's become something of a staple in my playing now. I don't have any trouble with other radius' (radii?) but it's definitely become a very specific preference when looking for a guitar though certainly not a deal breaker.

I've owned two strats - one American Standard and another old custom shop (can't remember the year on either). I've never played a strat that I felt like I really bonded with. I always wanted to, but I just assumed that for years that style of guitar just wasn't my thing. I've had my Silver Sky since they came out and I've FINALLY filled that void in my life. It's exactly what I was looking for and more. A REMARKABLE instrument

Hey all - I've been playing 50 years and have played lots of guitars and generally consider myself a strat guy. Although I was worried about the vintage neck radius (I have always played flatter necks) I finally pulled the trigger on a Silver Sky and it arrived this past Saturday. I have been playing it non-stop! My concerns about the radius were overblown. Is it somewhat rounder? Yes, of course. But the whole experience - the radius, the neck profile and overall playability make the radius a non-issue for me. And of course the sound! I would recommend that any of you who are curious to give it a try. Even if you have to order it online without playing it first, which is pretty common I think with the demand for this, it's worth it. I think you will be pleasantly surprised! I love this thing!

I own a Silver Sky (Horizon), my pickup selector switch also cracked. Weird, something is wrong there...in almost 40 years of playing I've never had that happen. My only other peeve, is the volume knob numbers wear EXTREMELY fast, you cannot make out 3-7 on the knob. Minor, but WTF? My 35 year old Mexican Fender strat has original selector switch and knob with no issues. Other than that, I love this guitar and the tone is amazing.

I have 5 PRS guitars, one being a 2018 Silver Sky. To anyone who's interested in a 7.25" radius guitar, please don't be put off by all the neck radius discussions. Like the wider neck of a classical guitar versus a steel string guitar, it's certainly a different feel, but what you get for the difference can be so inspiring and bring out different qualities in your playing. I love my Silver Sky. Maybe even because it's such a different radius. I'm super impressed by Mary Spender's discussion here. I found her (you) through a Warren Huart Produce Like a Pro video. I'm with you. But I invite you to play both guitars, in the same price range. For me, the PRS SS is just so ductile and flowing... plus the tone is great... I loe Fender strats, but I have the impression Fender ask you to use so much more money to get to this level of guitar.

Thanks for your 'honest' review Mary! I had a JM Strat and sold it after a year. (I also have 6 LP's and 4 Teles) I ended up building a 'parts caster' with a thicker V neck and a very custom, exact spec David Gilmour loaded pickguard. I think I also want a Silver Sky for those '63 Strat tones! $2300 USD is a little hard to swallow though. Thanks again!! --gary

I also put in the David Gilmore picguard on my 1981 Squier Stratocaster. Its neck is incredible and wear on the frets is amazingly small. Love that guitar.

True story! A friend of mine very kindly let me try his as he has lots of PRS guitars but I've always liked the balance and feel of a strat body. He did say it was controversial, but to me all that matters is how the guitar plays and sounds and I really liked it! Great video!

Just some evidence that EVERY company that makes anything has a level of quality issues. PRS is widely acknowledged as being one of the best guitar makers as far as quality is concerned, but even they don’t have a perfect record, because nobody does. You keep making things and sooner or later you’ll have a QC “escape” or something will break on your product that probably shouldn’t. This doesn’t mean that when we are the one who experiences the issue we should just accept it of course.

@@davidburke2132 I had an issue with the low E tuner on my new PRS, it had been broken either at the factory or the music store, I only noticed months later when I went to change strings - right in the middle of Covid lockdown. No chance to take it into the store or return to PRS for repair, but they asked if I was happy to do the repair myself if they sent the parts, a week later I got a package from PRS parts dept with the bits I needed. No brand of mass produced guitars is perfect, what sets them apart is their attitude to fixing problems and customer service. I do not regret my choice of PRS based on the service I have had, I can't fault it. I also have to say I have had great service from PMT Music for a couple of warranty repairs - if you saw the state of my Shure headphones, you'd laugh (various diy repairs which finally failed), but they got them sorted with no fuss - I honestly expected Shure to refuse on the basis of "WTF have you done to these, you monster"!

Good review, good cadence in speaking (not too fast or slow). Your music is nice and your a beautiful young lady. I wish you all the success with your music career. I agree about the tuning pegs. I was told Paul wanted very light ones as he didnt want to add weight to the headstock. They are a good size but they don't look nice. Please note that PRS has modified the pickups since their release at least 3 times. The original ones were brighter. I due prefer the latest pickups as the original were a little too bright for my taste.

Found this really helpful. I have had lots of S type guitars, and the main problem I've always found was in my head as come resale time people don't know what the brand is and it didn't say Fender on the head-stock. However, when it says PRS that is regarded as Custom Shop quality, but in my experience PRS are better. Saving up for the next limited edition color - this is all that that is stopping me!

My switch tip broke too it's common for these. You're right about the tuners as well. As it's a premium priced guitar it should come with a hard case, my Fender American Elite had an SKB style case as standard and it was considerably cheaper. Don't like the fret wire on the SS too narrow for me so gonna refret it with bigger wire. Nice review, thank you

I added to the horde over the past couple of months. I bought a swamp ash G&L Fullerton Deluxe S-500, an American Performer Strat, and an HSS Player Strat. PRS Silver Sky was on the wish list, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it, because I realize that I'm only interested because it's so popular. I have a roasted maple neck PRS SE24, and I love it. I've had other PRS guitars, but when I'm playing them, I just long for a Stratocaster. I'll be in the market again eventually. I'll give the Silver Sky another look then.

Best thing with the best strats is that they are like microphones, very invisible and giving more room to your playing and every strat player sounds different so I really hope someone else likes this PRS too. And don't worry Mary, even 1700e Fender Strats have problems.
