The proudest I've ever been - naming my Loco 'Sir William McAlpine'

Hello everyone,
Some of you will have seen in the Railway Press that recently my Ruston 48 was rededicated in memory of the man I purchased her from.
We shot this video to give a flavour of the day, and to document this quite important occasion.
If you like what you've seen in the video and are interested in finding out more about the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway, or are interested in becoming part of the society, visit their website at www.mslr.org.uk/
A video featuring,
Lawrie - Presenter and feeling very proud,
Lady McAlpine - VIP guest to the railway,
Kindred - Camerawork and general assistant,
Jayemm - in a rare reversal of roles, Jayemm, having been there when we bought the 48 home, was here to see the completion of the restoration.

This might sound strange, but i'm glad you've not kept it 100% original and made it yours with this. To many people are hung up on "originality" that they forget that these things were regularly changed. It's a lovely name, I'm sure he is smiling down and muttering "It's not an A3, but I love it" You're living every railfans dream. Enjoy yourself.

I think it fits her...perfectly. I think wherever Sir William is he's smiling...perhaps moreso that it's not some fancy, flashy mainline engine, but a simple yeoman of a diesel that bears his name. I never met the man, but from what little I've read of him, he seems the type to be more impressed by that! I love that Lady McAlpine seems to be having an absolute blast on the old engine too. I hope one day I can do something similar for the one surviving steam engine of my favorite (American) railroad: My grandfather loved trains and that same company, and got me interested in trains through it, in many ways. My fervent dream is one day I can climb aboard her cab with his picture in my vest pocket, just to say, "We did it." (Apologies profusely...I did not mean for that to go on as much of a tangent as it did).

  • @lmm

@@lmm its the Missouri Kansas Texas, MKT or "Miss Katy" as her fans call her. the engine is their number 311, an 1870s 4-4-0 that worked until the 50s on the massive branchline in Oklahoma, the Northwest District. Miss Katy never had the biggest steamers (hell, her biggest steam loco was a 2-8-2) or the flashiest trains, but damn was she the best. The engine actually has the distinction of being the only locomotive to have arrived at its museum under its own steam. she was backdated and used as a touring prop to celebrate the railroads history in the 50s, that's why she survived. the Katy Railroad Historical Society (of which I am a member) is slowly cosmetically restoring her to her 30s-50s configuration.

Great video. Not sure if you knew this but a Class 60 numbered as 60008 was named by the man himself in 2006 and there is a Class 90 that is also named after him. 60008 is and has been stored at Toton Traction Depot since 2007 and I think GBRF has bought that one either as a donor for parts or as a standby locomotive. If you wanted that one, it might be best to contact GBRF or DB Cargo as they might sell it to you mate in the future. Its been 12 years in open storage so you might be able to negotiate a good price for it if they are willing to sell it on to you mate.
