Pro #1: Construction Is Exciting
Construction is not like your typical 9-5 job that you do the same monotonous thing every single day. As a construction project engineer, you will always be on the go, learning, solving problems, and just consistently active throughout the day. In construction you are always progressing and trying to hit an aggressive schedule and budget. And through this you can also be very creative in the construction industry. Especially as an engineer, you want to be creative, and there is no one right way to build a construction project. You have complete control over how to make money, be more efficient, and execute the project. Also, no project is forever, you will constantly have fresh starts, new challenges and new opportunities.
Pro #2: You Can Make An Impact As An Entry Level Engineer
Being a construction engineer is not like most entry level jobs. Your impact as an engineer is felt from Day 1. Everything you do has a direct impact on the job, and there's not a lot of activities that don't bring value to the project. To me this is so important especially for those who really want to make a difference and are go-getters because it doesn't matter where you are on the totem pole, you are valuable in construction.
Pro #3: You Gain Real Life, Applicable Knowledge
This is especially true if you work in the building industry. You can learn how to do things around your house! You can learn means and methods, cost analysis and can ask any contractor that you hire intelligent and thought provoking questions and call them out if they're slacking off. Everyone at some point needs to have something done around the house so it's nice when you career can supplement that knowledge.
Pro #4: There's Some Good Money In Construction
Having a career in construction pays a pretty good salary especially considering you can become a construction engineer with just a bachelors. Probably on the low end, construction engineer salaries start at ~$50k and in Hawaii I've seen them as high as $90K and that was 5 years ago. It depends on the company and the type of construction that you do; what I find is that the highest paying companies don't have the best culture, so you kind of have to find the balance and culture fit for you. And to move up in the industry, its all effort; you can learn everything you need to learn to be successful in construction on the job.
Pro #5: The People You Will Meet
The construction industry is far reaching. I've met people in the industry that I would have never thought I would get to interact with. Within the project circle, you have construction workers, subcontractors, designers, engineers, developers and suppliers. But you may also deal with bankers, real estate developers, and even politicians. When you get on high profile projects you can meet some pretty important people. And because the industry is so well connected, even if you leave the industry, you could have opened a career opportunity for yourself that you didn't even know existed.
Pro #6: You Get To Build Something That Will Last
There truly is no better feeling than seeing a project completed that you put so much effort into. Every construction project has a story, and the result is so tangible and will be a reminder of your work for years to come.

Kienan, I have been a carpenter and laborer my entire life. I was living on Oahu, Hawaii doing building take-off for a luxury home builder. When covid started in 2020 I decided to move to Florida to pursue a Master of science in Construction Management . I plan on moving back to HI after school. I know there are bigger cities with more opportunities than Honolulu, but I love the islands and built better friendships while living in Hawaii than I have anywhere else. I’d love to to be able to ask some industry related questions specific to Hawaii.
Thanks for sharing. Great video👏🏾

Legos for adults is really the truth. The effort you put in is what you get out of it. Everyone in construction loves a hard worker who's passionate. You get to work with trades people who work with their hands so they're down to earth. The richest people in the world own real estate so you're an asset around wealthy people who value rental properties. We need more honest trustworthy builders (you have to manage money and construction, which is an orchestra).. who are passionate and focused on doing their best.

What would a project engineer do for a mechanical contracting company? Is it the same as a regular construction project engineer?
👏 I should’ve went to school for construction instead of psychology 😅
I work 9 years in hospitality and due to the pandemic lost my job. Took a 1.5 year break to be with my kids and now I'm finally chasing my dream of getting into construction here in NYC. I just got hire for my first job as a Project Coordinator/ Administrator. They pay is not great in all honesty, but it's a foot in the door. I'm planning on getting some good experience then move on to another firm. Ideally I'd like to be a construction manager or sir project manager hopefully within the next 2 - 4 years. Any additional gems of advice?

Did you go back to school for a degree?
Good video man, where did you go to college for CM? I am currently looking for where to transfer to go into a CM program, any tips on choosing?
@KienenKoga

I went to the University of Washington but my degree was in civil engineering. I would go to a program in a city where you would want to work; being a local university student can give you a leg up in other applicants plus you can attend career fairs, etc and meet face to face with the companies

I'm just curious, what are the main differences between a construction and project manager? Also, your videos are awesome!! :D
@KienenKoga
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bibi! So a construction manager would be more of a manager of the contractor while the project manager is part of the contractor team. The construction manager will be hired by the owner to make sure the contractor is doing what theyre supposed to if the owner isn’t as experienced or needs help with managing the process of the project

Is there a path someone can take without a degree? An entry level position to start and work your way up?
I’m thinking of studying construction management or a business type of degree in college next year I’m looking for the job that makes me a lot of money which career do u recommend me more because I’m a sociable person and could deal with people on site.
bro where do I sign up? I'm ready to start a new career in construction right now. I'm 30 - ain't gettin' any younger
Keinen,Can you tell the entry level roles a fresher could get in the construction management department
What skill sets would you recommend a project manager know?
Hi, Is it better to major in Civil Engineering or Construction Management?
haha I was just as gitty during the last part
Would there be any advantages having your PE as a project and/or construction engineer?
@KienenKoga
3 жыл бұрын
Great question, actually in the midst of applying for my PE now. From a financial perspective no, doesn’t do anything. Its more of another tool in the toolbelt type thing. Maybe you’ll get a little more respect, or if you stop construction you have another avenue you can go with you license. But in terms of direct benefit and helping you do you job better? Not really
So do you get paid more with having a bachelors degree in construction management engineering?
Can I beald my own business When I retire from my previous job ?
I really loved the video.. I am doing my bachelor's degree in civil engineering in India can I get a job in United States... Cuz I heard that construction companies in US prefers degree holders from US universities... Would you please clear my doubt...
@KienenKoga
3 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to say it's impossible, but it is tough. It's likely more about the communication than the degree itself; a big part of our jobs is communication so if there's a language barrier it becomes tough to be successful. But I wouldn't say it's impossible.
This intro has me dying 😂😂😂😂

Ok will I be able to pay my student loans with this job how much debt will I be in can you talk about that

hopefully! I don't suggest you go past debt that you can't pay off in a year's worth of salary.
Construction salaries are pretty darn good, this is a lie in my country. :(
Does master in Construction management after Graduation what is the Salary of an Construction Project engineer after Master degree.
@KienenKoga
3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, a master's degree probably doesn't pay you that much more in construction. It may only reap a financial benefit if you get a promotion over someone else because of your credentials but you won't see that until maybe 10-15 years down the line.

@mellopez7057

Most times when you complete a project, there’s something lined up or theres a spot in estimating or something to go after pursuits which a lot more low key. But if times get too rough and theres no work out there, you could get laid off and thats the risk of the industry and it’s cyclical nature
