The Pros and Cons of Outdoor Tortoise Keeping

Keeping tortoises outside can be a wonderful enriching opportunity for them - but it's not for everyone. NO JUDGEMENT if you are a strictly indoor keeper! There are lots of reasons to get them outdoors, but there are also lots of reasons not to. I go over how I make the decision for my tortoises and all of the things to watch out for. I have several outdoor enclosures and tortoises who are strictly indoors, outdoors part time and fully outdoors. Outdoor keeping is not for everyone, I still struggle with the amount of control over the environment that you lose. But the interesting behaviors and overall enrichment for the tortoises outweighs the negatives for me. Where do you keep your tortoises?

Very rational, level headed explanation. I don't keep chelonians, but this discussion can become quite debatable in lizard circles, particularly the Lacertidae subcommunity.

Great video!! And I appreciate you sharing that website... That's a great resource. We have a sulcata tortoise who lives in our back yard (plus we just built him a house), and we live in the Tampa Bay area. I'm constantly watching the weather... and it's honestly exhausting 😅 His new house helps, but those darn mosquitoes and fire ants are the worst issue. Yet we can't use any type of chemical to treat the yard. So if you have any helpful tips on that, that would be an awesome video!!

I use mosquito bits in any standing water, but even as dry as it’s been they’ve been awful this year. I also treat fire ants with Amdro or Advion, but not in the tortoise enclosures.
I put mine outside when it is warmer & mist them often. I also soak them once a week. In the winter, they come in. It gets way too cold.
