The pros and cons of being an art therapist

Ойын-сауық

Art Therapy is great. You can work with anyone-- don't let the naysayers get you down. But also, consider the drawbacks to having a masters degree in art therapy.

Ever since I`ve heard that Art Therapy as a profession exists, it immediately struck a chord in me. My gut instinct told me that it`s something that I want (will) become. In my country (Croatia) art therapy doesn`t exist. So I came all the way in Milwaukee to get my Master`s in science in art therapy with a focus in counseling. So, here I am, just finished my 1st year out of three, preparing for the next semester to start. I`ve had my first internship in a hospital setting, treating mixed population. As to the population I prefer to work with, it`s people who suffer from war-related PTSD, or schizophrenia, or inmates and adolescents. Not only did I came to the US completely alone, abandoning my friends and family, to travel to a different continent to study art therapy in my non-native language, but I`m also a male, which is a minority in the art therapy field. Since I`m on a student visa, I can`t work anywhere outside of my college. But all things considered, this is the best and only place that I want to be in, getting knowledge from one of the best professors in the field, preparing to become something I believe is my calling. Let`s see where our roads will take us.

If the school is open to it and has an open position, absolutely. Art therapist work in almost all environments, especially ones that psychologists, social workers or other therapists have worked in before.

After you have the masters degree in art therapy. Are there possible alternative careers if the career outlook is crap? Would you be able to go out into the mental health field as some sort of therapist ?In the state of Pennsylvania I can't be a licensed art therapist .I can only practice art therapy as a related field or under the professional counselor license . Which means I have no idea the educational route I would take. At first I thought I would major in psychology and take art electives and that would suffice but the master degree programs don't encompass art classes only psych related classes. I recently came back from the U.K and my stepmother said art therapists for Autistic children are in high demand. I'm currently a teachers aide at a special needs school so I'm familiar with the population.

The program I went to also had classes to make sure we could get our LPC. I was just thinking about this today. I highly recommend social work. If you ever decide to move, it has way better chance of being accepted in another state. A part of keeping your license is taking classes so you can take classes in art therapy. Many states don't have license protection for art therapist so you can call yourself one or say that you do art as a part of your practice. Other art therapists might harass you about calling yourself an art therapist but most aren't nice anyway and unless it's a law against it, it's not a serious problem.

angel sorrentino The American Art Therapy Association has info on their webpage. People usually start out with getting an undergraduate degree in either psychology, art or art therapy before moving on to a master's in art therapy. There are classes that are required for an accredited art therapy master's program. For example I have my undergraduate degree in Psychology so I had to take a lot of art classes in order to get into the art therapy master's program. After graduation, there's different requirements per state and they might change before you get there so just make sure that your school keeps you informed about what's expected of you after you graduate from a master's program.
