Working with your core is definitely where your power comes from. I will tell you from using a rec yak and a sea yak for a boat demo, you get a lot of speed from the sea yak compared to the rec yak.

The suggestion at 2:10 mirrors the best coaching advice I ever received for the forward stroke. If you take it past the "Oh, this is hard!" (or "this sucks") stage and really work with it, you won't forget it, and after that, paddling without using your core will just feel strange and inefficient.

Try lowering your backband. If you have a rigid seat back, try raising it to a more vertical position. Also stretch your hamstrings before going out.

Good video. However, using your legs is where the core mussles are when paddling forward. Thats how you will get the rotation on the upper body more naturely.
