We saw these at the Abilities Expo this year and we have also found it useful for moving me after a seizure or my family has gotten it under me after calling 911 to help the paramedics get me out of the house easier (there is not a lot of room for a stretcher without moving furniture..) if I get sick enough that I cannot be transported to the hospital by my family.

Great idea! however, I have to bring up some thoughts on a bit of the negative side. The issue with liability. Yes, in an emergency, most people won't give it a second thought, but for other situations, Places where you go, the dentist for example, they may refuse to do it and be mandated to supply their own equipment whatever it may be. That mandate is often times because of what their insurance company directs. If something that is not approved by their insurance they will not be covered if something happens. Some people will likely not want to do it because they're afraid of what could happen to them if they dropped you and you got further hurt. Of course that's aside from the concerns that they may hurt you. I'm not knocking the device because it is awesome, but just food for thought on some of the challenges of using it that sometimes just don't make sense.

We have had an Adapts sling for about 3 years. I got it for air travel, in the event of an emergency evacuation. Although we haven't had to use it for an emergency, I always put it in the seat and I love it! While some people are critical and nitpicky, I'll bet they would give anything to have one if they were in an emergency evacuation of a plane, train or bus. In my opinion, a great invention for people with limited mobility!

Each year I volunteer and provide free support to someone in the community with a disability on a cruise holiday. I have been on several cruises where the person that I am supporting has not been able to get into the spa due to no hoist access. Next years cruise is to vanauatu and the person that I am supporting requires a wheelchair. This sling will make spa and beach access possible. I am excited as the person that I am supporting loves to swim.

Just to say for regular use at a facility like a Hospital, a hoist should be used for staff Safety. And in emergency situations in hotels, public spaces the general advice is to use an evacchair if you cannot carry The person in The Wheelchair because you need little to no strength for an evac

  • @adapts3177

The problem with evac chairs is that only one person at a time can use it and then somebody has to bring it back UP the stairs if there are others waiting. Rarely do high rises have even one evac chair at every stair exit or on every floor because of the cost. They are complicated to assemble when minutes matter too. For the price of one stair chair, fifteen people could have their own ADAPTS and no waiting in fumes or smoke. 🤗💛

Absolutely agree. Our intention is to allow people around to be rescuers so we made it intuitive to use. Stair chairs are super expensive and time consuming to assemble. I used to be able to walk, I had a riding accident where I ended up temporarily paralysed as a disc prolapsed into my cord. I did sort of recover, but still had the prolapsed disc. Over the years as I was a carer for my mum, I ended up with more and more prolapsed discs. One being when I my mum had to have a CAT scan after having an X-ray and a mass showed up. They asked me to take her to have the scan, I wheeled her wheelchair up to the scan bed, there were 5 technicians in there, I stood back, they all looked at me, and each other, one then said well cam you get onto the bed! I said she's disabled she couldn't, I said you'll need to lift her up and onto it. I was totally shocked with their reply!!! Sorry we're not allowed to touch the patient and lift them! I said well how is she to get on there!!😠 They f**king stood back watching hurt myself lifting my mum up, all 13 stone of her!!! I slipped another disc doing it! Dentist... I have to have my teeth do e at St Leonards dental hospital London because they have trouble numbing my teeth. For X-Rays it's done in a small room, not big enough to get a wheelchair in! They had to cancel my appointment because I couldn't get in there and couldn't get up because my crutches were in the car, they failed to tell me that the wheelchair couldn't go in there! They wouldn't in either case of my mum or myself lift us like they did you! Why is there one rule for one disabled person another for another disabled person?😠

Seat slings have been a thing since I was a kid, although not in DayGlo yellow. The last time I used one was when sailing with the Jubilee Sailing Trust. You have to sit in them all day because if they evacuate the ship, they use a manual pulley system. It would be no use to me on a plane because of my unbendy knees. Care homes have hoists because they aren't allowed to physically lift people. I reckon you and Shauno should book a JST voyage. Wheelchair users are, on average, less likely to get seasick because of our lower centre of gravity.

Thank you for commenting! Since it was designed initially for use on an aircraft in an emergency where the cabin will likely be filled with smoke, the DayGlo yellow makes it visible so people know to help! @wheelsnoheels_ Gem, have you not heard of the special needs dental service? They cater for people who are unable to transfer to the dentist's chair, have additional needs etc. Locally, one of the centres has a device that can tilt wheelchairs, including powerchairs, so there's no need to transfer. In the UK, nursing homes almost certainly wouldn't be allowed to use this sling, unless it's an emergency, as, due to Health and Safety issues, lifting is not allowed - hence hoists being used. Care workers in your own home are not allowed to lift someone and two workers must be available to use a manual hoist. If it's a ceiling track hoist, only one worker is necessary, unless the person needs two people to roll them to put a sling in place, if it's not an in-situ sling. Patient Transport Services have to use a PAT slide and stretcher for patients who cannot transfer and sit in a transport wheelchair. I think the idea of this is great for emergency use, but it almost certainly wouldn't be able to be used as a daily lifting aid for paid workers. For some reason, if it's family and friends however, Health and Safety legislation doesn't apply! 🤷‍♀

Thanks for your comment, Henry. Because of our rigorous testing we have met FAA standards for flame retardant materials, static and dynamic load testing to 450lbs, thus are able to offer a 10yr warranty against manufacturer's defects. We manufacture in the USA which has higher labor costs than China, for example. This is important to our American consumers to be USA made. Secondly, to start up a business there are soft costs (filing a patent, marketing and advertising, hiring staff for the 7 Abilities Expos we attend, plus the cost of fulfillment and renting booths at expos). We wanted to make it affordable for the disability community but still cover our costs. 💛😊

There are six handles for up to six to help. It is factory tested to 450lbs. After 1,000 rounds of static and dynamic load testing ADAPTS passed with flying colors. But, you are right, it is still a manual lifting sling and designed for when there is an emergent need to get a person to safety fast. So it will depend on the strength of those lifting and the space and distance they need to move to get out of danger. For the average sized person, it is portable and usable when a hoist is not available or is inoperative. Thanks for asking!

Actually our nearest competitors are 2 or 3 times more expensive. There are a lot of other costs associated with bringing a product to market. We spent over a year researching, developing, testing before settling on a design 7 prototypes later. Because it is used on an airplane, we had to meet FAA flammability standards. Legal costs for filing a patent, marketing, and advertising are very expensive. Booking 7 Abilities Expos every year and travel costs to send a 4 member team to do live demos for customers. We are manufactured in a factory in Fort Wayne, Indiana where labor costs are more expensive than countries like China, for example. Made in USA is important to us and our US customers. We employ members from the disability community to inspect, fold, pack, fulfill, and ship our product. It is very important to us to make ADAPTS affordable for the disability community. Our price point was set by people from the community in multiple focus groups. Our vision is to get ADAPTS into the safety kits of the airplanes and are working with legislators and traveling to Washington DC to lobby for that mission. Our founder is a retired flight attendant funding this effort from her savings. Thank you for your comment and we hope that better explains the background. 💛🤗
