    The average home in Japan wouldn't have one of those. That style is a more recent one. The more common style is the deep, square tub for 1.5 people, usually out of thermoplastic, connected directly to a gas water heater.

    This is why stuff made in Japan is still so good. The capitalist mindset of "cut costs to increase profits above all else" hasn't invaded their manufacturing to the degree that it has elsewhere, and so we still get skilled craftspeople putting hands on these products throughout the manufacturing process, making sure that what they're making is something of actual quality and worth purchasing. You can tell how outside the norm this is by the number of comments here shocked at how involved the process is.

    It goes without saying that here is not a room for those who make complaints of products but those who want to see how enameled cast iron bathtubs are produced with such a precision and most of people are admired its processes as well as quality of products which must be superior in maintaining water temperature. The process itself has been kept originally for more than a century but rationalized by the machinery. While foreign visitors are applauding and delighted to see the process of enameled cast iron bathtubs in traditional way, it’s pity some Japanese people can’t be proud of their own traditions and techniques.

    So much work and material being used has to make this extremely expensive. Why make it of cast iron? I think pressed sheet metal with enamel is perfectly good.

  • @SkigBiggler

    @SkigBiggler

    6 ай бұрын

    I’m not aware of baths made out of sheet metal that’s pressed. There’s acrylic and fibreglass baths, as well as copper baths that are apparently forged into shape. It’s also probably cheaper to use an easily recreated sand cast mold than manufacturing a die that can be used more than once in a forging or pressing process. Cast iron is far easier to cast than steel, and would be more durable than a thinner sheet metal tub. I doubt this factory pumps out millions of tubs a year, but nonetheless I presume there’s a market for solid, durable bathtubs that won’t crack or bend.
