I would never expect the process to be so labor-intensive...

It's cool to see what real Japanese bathtubs look like, the ones in anime always look like they're big enough for 4 people.

This is a particular kind of bath tub. Most bath tubs are made of resin or steel and are wider and less deep. Also cheaper😂

Yeah, I didn't get the part about casting the iron either. Why not use and mold a sheet of steel, which then is enameled? Mind you, my background is not in metallurgy or anything adjacent, so I might be wrong.
@markrainford1219

@@babayaga6376 They do manufacture pressed steel baths. Cast iron is the ultimate quality though. Like comparing a Le Creuset pan with a spun steel one. Glad I don't have to carry them upstairs anymore.

The average home in Japan wouldn't have one of those. That style is a more recent one. The more common style is the deep, square tub for 1.5 people, usually out of thermoplastic, connected directly to a gas water heater.
The amount of machinery and equipment needed is absolutely staggering.
Short and deep. It was nice for the few years I lived in Okinawa. 😊

Made in Japan ! 👌👍🎯🏆🥇💪 ❤️❤️❤️🇯🇵❤️❤️❤️ 👋👋👋
Neat to see the craftsmanship that goes into the process.....and the music was actually entertaining.
👀👀 didn't thought a bathtub is casted and involve so many heavy machineries 👀👀
Very interesting to see how countries differ in tub making. Each country has definite needs and desires of usefulness. Yet the similarities are very close to the same . Insulation and smooth clean design with safety in mind.
this is so complicated; that bathtub must be very expensive
É uma obra de arte! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is why stuff made in Japan is still so good. The capitalist mindset of "cut costs to increase profits above all else" hasn't invaded their manufacturing to the degree that it has elsewhere, and so we still get skilled craftspeople putting hands on these products throughout the manufacturing process, making sure that what they're making is something of actual quality and worth purchasing. You can tell how outside the norm this is by the number of comments here shocked at how involved the process is.

these baths are made to last and probably cost considerably more than a cheap acrylic bath you can buy for less than 100 USD

cutting costs without regard for the product. That's why standards were created in manufacturing to create products with standard performance and durability. ISO6001 for example. International Organization for Standardization International standards development organization The International Organization for Standardization is an international standard development organization composed of representatives from the national standards organizations of member countries. Membership requirements are given in Article 3 of the ISO Statutes. ISO was founded on 23 February 1947, and it has published over 24,500 international standards covering almost all aspects of technology and manufacturing. Money Governments and corporations won't buy products unless the manufacturers are certified under ISO production guidelines.

There is an enameled cast iron bathtub at home, and everyone used to have one. Most likely they have small-scale production, that’s why everything is so complicated.

These are friggin beautiful. - sent from my inferior bath
Absolutely beautiful!
It goes without saying that here is not a room for those who make complaints of products but those who want to see how enameled cast iron bathtubs are produced with such a precision and most of people are admired its processes as well as quality of products which must be superior in maintaining water temperature. The process itself has been kept originally for more than a century but rationalized by the machinery. While foreign visitors are applauding and delighted to see the process of enameled cast iron bathtubs in traditional way, it’s pity some Japanese people can’t be proud of their own traditions and techniques.
They are beautiful
This is a good video, thumbs up.
Now that is craftmanship !!!
It always seem that they could do a lot more but some of these videos they seem to only do a few or just one at a time. If was just for the episode, then seems like a waste of a day if they could be making hundreds more for that one day. Great content! I visited Japan last year 2023, and it was so great. Plan to go again 2025... see you in Japan
Bravo!
Quy trình sản xuất bồn tắm gang tráng men, Nhà máy sản xuất Nhật Bản.. OK 🇯🇵👍.
Excellence. Makes me want one !
VERY NICE
Amazing!
I'm surprised they are still being made. Fiberglass tubs and showers are so much easier to handle in construction.

Nice thick enamel. Will last a lifetime.
Compared to modern steel and acrylic bathtubs these are very heavy and hard to warm up, but after they gained heat they stay warm for much longer.
Great
Solid build! What's the process that after the casting, the sand still remain separated rather than a solid block?
to everyone who was wondering why it's so expensive? well you have the answer in this video.
Completely off topic: I like the music.

So much work and material being used has to make this extremely expensive. Why make it of cast iron? I think pressed sheet metal with enamel is perfectly good.
@SkigBiggler
I’m not aware of baths made out of sheet metal that’s pressed. There’s acrylic and fibreglass baths, as well as copper baths that are apparently forged into shape. It’s also probably cheaper to use an easily recreated sand cast mold than manufacturing a die that can be used more than once in a forging or pressing process. Cast iron is far easier to cast than steel, and would be more durable than a thinner sheet metal tub. I doubt this factory pumps out millions of tubs a year, but nonetheless I presume there’s a market for solid, durable bathtubs that won’t crack or bend.
I am truly curious about how their sand forms work, because it would seem like there's no chemical binding in the sand, which makes me question - how does it retain it's form?
@aaronbaird3533

It's called v-process. Vacuum holds the sand in shape. Rather like a brick of vacuum packed coffee. Just seems really odd compared to more conventional foundry techniques, but appears to work quite well.

the plastic sheet they vacuum into the first part may be the spacer between the mold halves. when they pour in the cast iron it burns up . this would be like the lost foam method of casting?
The background music is called "concerto for a cast iron bathtub" by Bathtoven.
😊
Is it me? Are those baths a bit on the small size? I take it they aren’t for lying down in?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Steel, I suspect, not cast iron. Cast iron that thin would be very weak, and a PITA to try and enamel, whereas steel would be easier to handle, stronger, and easier to enamel.
A far cry from the Pakistani safety sandals...🤣🤣🤣

@@aleksandersuur9475 This is not enamel paint, its glass. The only thing keeping these tubs from lasting 100 years is interior design whims. I've seen cast iron enamel tubs outside in the elements used as animal troughs, you could clean them up with some Ajax and re-install them.
