The problem with Short Throw Laser Projectors (WeMax)

It's been a while since the last video and an even greater while since the last talk sh** mondays, but here we are. Haven't felt like making any videos probably because my new job is incredibly demanding and is siphoning all creative energy I have. Other than that, I've just been kinda enjoying doing my DIY projects only for myself.
Anywho - so home theater systems are super cool and all, but I feel like you need to have a PhD just to figure out what it takes to get one going. Between all the jargon, misinfo, stupid marketing, and actual DIY you have to do -- it's a bear of a project if you're going in with no experience. I'll probably do a follow up video when I'm completely finished setting everything up to my liking. But we're talking HDMI, wire gauges, how to install it all cleanly, lens shift, zoom, short throw, 1080p, 4K, 16:9 ratio, screens, ALR, A/V receiver, Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround, etc etc etc.

Odd, the instruction manual didn't say that I should start with an unfinished basement so that I could build around this unit. Way too much hassle! And after installing a regular projector, I'm not sure there were any inherent advantages to the short throw projector.

@@Bootstrappin again, There is a plethora of great information on the internet that could have helped better informed the decision. Particularly with regard to an expensive purchase. Especially since projectors are a reflected medium as opposed to a directive medium, like a TV monitor. Mounting, reflection, diffraction, viewing angle, throw angle, brightness, throw distance, light reflection, LoS and light rejection are all considerations off the top of my head that I have to learn when considering my first projector. These consideration all carried over to subsequent projector. But if I want the best experience and ROI, I put in the time. You have to design any room around a projecter for optimal results particularly because it is reflective. The advantage of a short throw over a long throw, which I have owned both, is that you do have to have ~11 feet of unobstructed line of sight air space between your viewing area, where you sit and the screen that you viewing, contingent on your desired viewable screen size. The may mean the exploration of various mounting options and even some creative keystoning. A short throw means you have less of the focus of design is around the mounting options and LoS of the projector which shifts to the screen making it more like a TV. Though, pound for pound, projectors will give you more screen size for the buck, considering the recent availability and pricing reductions of extra large screen tvs, 75 - 85 inches, I have sold my projectors, and have moved toward direct images media such as LG C1s.

Good point Mat but another is maybe you shouldn't have to or the manufacturer should provide or offer clear pre-reqs. Yes maybe you and I understand this the research bit but home theater experience shouldn't be a science experiment. Manufacturer also hold some responsibility. For example slapping Atmos on a sound bar doesn't mean that it always produces Atmos sound. We may understand that but how many don't get that if it's not in the source material your NOT getting Atmos. Also you can't get Atmos unless you have at least two height channels and PLUS most Atmos tracks streamed or otherwise are quite week. Don't get me started on Atmos more Dolby BS marketing to rip consumer's

@@MatthewParksSr I mean, are you listening to yourself? Look at how much information you just described just to make a reasonable experience with the projector possible. This is a *consumer level product* that is marketed as plug-and-play. The manual for this projector is practically shorter than your comment, and that's more or less my point with this video. I'm making this video available, so that in the course of doing research, people can understand the inherent downsides - including not just immutable items such as a room itself, but also the non-existence of appropriate furniture. It's an unfair expectation on the manufacturer's part to make the customer have to figure out the setup and not offer solutions to common problems. It's unreasonable.

I purchased a wemax nova as well. The fixed aspect ratio relative to the size which directly affects the image height was the exact problem I had as well. I was shooting for a 150" screen but that literally placed the image 17" off the ground. Not wanting the wemax sitting directly on the floor, I decided to ceiling mount it. It was really a major pain but inverting the problem has solved what I was I was hoping to accomplish.

Wow I can see like three easy solutions with just a little effort. 1. Put the projector on a sliding tray. 2. Tilt the rear of the projector up slightly with a shim under the base. 3. Make a frame and stretch your own projector screen to eliminate surface flaws. Probably took you longer to make and upload this to do any one of those.

I'll concede that these short throws are so finnicky that they can't deal with anything other than a perfect surface... but most of my points still stand. You need a very peculiar setup for the room - some of which you can't really do much about, which is ceiling height. You can't get a proper large picture with a sub 8' ceiling without major compromises, or having to basically put this thing on the floor in an awkward space like 3 feet from the wall. You also need specialized furniture. I don't know, for all the fuss you have to go through, I don't really understand the advantage of this over a traditional projector.

*HELPFUL INFO FOR ANYONE BUYING SHORT THROWS* I have a wemax A300 *and* a Formovie Cinema 2. And had dozens of older projectors 1. INVEST in a black screen be prepared to spend 2k on your screen! (It's a game changer) 2. Easiest furniture fix. Buy 2 of whatever you're planning to sit it on against the wall. Ie. Ikea tv cabinet get 2! It sticks out from the wall but at least it's nice and flat and you have plenty of space to size the image how you want. 3. You may experience issues connecting PC's because of DRIVER issues (remember one is using android the others using say windows). 4. If you haven't bought yet get the 2nd editions of the whatever new version comes out. Like a car they tend to have fixed any issues from the original release model. (Ie. The Formovie 2 is FAR brighter, and much more rugged compared to the original (bigger fan vents, cooler chip temp and so on). If you are willing to invest in the above it really is an amazing theatre experience! Every bit as good perhaps better than watching a movie in a theatre! (No joke the detail is amazing for the screen sizes!)

The very least you need is a cheap fixed frame projector screen (Alibaba @ something like 200-600 bucks depending on size - the higher value being maybe 150", which Formovie Theater can handle).

You could have mounted the projected on the ceiling instead of placing it on the floor! Some of the UST projectors support that kind of placement and allow for the projected images to be flipped so as to provide for a projection that is larger by way of starting from a place that is as close to the earliest available initiation point (place closest to the ceiling) as possible and then continuing onward as far as possible from there, in your case, toward the floor.

Sorry for your unfortunate experience, but I do appreciate you posting it. I’ve had a standard projector (JVC) and had HDMI handshake issues, excessive noise issues and only a so so picture (even though I spent $500 several years ago on a professional calibration). In my new build, I’m probably going to go with a UST (though the front runner for me is the Hisense PX1 Pro.) I plan to pair it with a quality AT screen, completely control the light, and place my front 3 towers behind it. My former room only had about 7 foot ceilings, so based on your experience, UST wouldn’t have worked in that space, but the new basement has 10 foot ceilings so it shouldn’t be an issue

  • @Bootstrappin

Oh yeah with such tall ceilings and the AT screen you should have no issues. I still find it somewhat awkward/distracting to have this big projector be within line of sight, but maybe that's just me. I guess it mostly comes down to what the room has to offer space wise.

  • @HeavyInstinct
    @HeavyInstinct Жыл бұрын

Another problem with these projectors is that in a home theater type setup it ends up having to be installed right where you would normally want your center channel speaker to go. To be clear the problems you outlined here are problems inherent with ultra short throw (UST) projectors, not "short throw" projectors. They are not the same thing. I actually prefer short throw projectors because they have a lot of the same advantages as a UST but none of the disadvantages that you mention here. They can still be installed at the front of your room, so that people aren't constantly walking between the projector and the screen and you also don't end up with the loss of light intensity that you get when the projector is placed farther away from the screen. They're typically less expensive than UST's as well Granted you are TYPICALLY still going to want to mount a short throw projector to the ceiling which is a problem for some people. However it was the perfect solution for me because it allowed me to free up that location for my center channel speaker. It also allowed for a nice clean look in my living room home theater as I have only the center channel speaker on a stand (same as the stands my main speakers are on but shorter), with no need for any other "furniture" at the front of my room.

For your situation I think that focusing on a smaller throw ratio is very important because it would allow you to set the projector closer to the wall. Also I believe that Formovie has a fixed focus, so maybe something with adjustable focus and raising the front feet would be a viable option for your situation. It still wouldn't be ideal because you would need to adjust keystone which does impact the image at the edges, but it may not even be noticable to you in the right circumstances.

Hello! I’m looking at the Formovie theater and I’ve measure it out a few times because I really want to fit a 120” screen in my living area but where the screen has to go is just under an air conditioning unit that is about 2 feet from the ceiling mounted on the wall. Therefore I’m forced to mount the 120” screen just below the ac unit and am going to have to basically set my Formovie in the floor. And if I did all of that I would still be 2in shy of the recommended placement. I saw a website that said I need to put the projector 16.9 inches below a 120” screen. I can only place it 15in below. Ultimately, I’m asking if you would know if I could place it 2 inches too high but use the 2 front legs to adjust the picture to fit the 120” screen perfectly and make up for the incorrect placement. I can place the projector as far out into the room as needed pretty much. I just didn’t wanna have to do a whole lot of keystone correction like you mentioned.

I had to play a lot of games moving the projector up and down and forward back when trying to get a better picture. Also make sure that the leveling feet are set properly. I see you're taking a lot of flak for your video, but I agree with you. You have actually proven to me that my issue with my Bomaker Polaris isn't the projector itself, but rather the angle at which the image is thrown making contact with my screen, causing the wavy, uneven and out of focus edge/s. Now that I know this, I will sell my Bomaker and get a regular throw 4k projector since it will have a direct cast to the screen instead of a sharp angle. There is a good amount of info available that can help you determine UST projector placement versus image cast/screen placement but just like you, I think it should be a lot easier to setup and dial in. I've owned several projectors and none of them have ever given me issues like the UST. Nope, no more UST for me, I learned the hard way. Can any of the Ultra Short Throws projectors put out a 4:3 aspect Ratio as an option ?

Honestly, don't know. I've watched a lot of older 4:3 stuff on my regular 16:9 projector without much bother, you just have a lot of empty space.

Not sure what that even means, as if "experienced" people (ie, happen to have the proper dimensions of room) are just collecting these en masse to flex on non-short throw users.

Yep welcome to the AV industry, you always have to dig for facts and read the fine print. I'm sure they tell just plug it in and dont tell you that USTs I think need a specific screen and there are specific distrances for the thhrow. Agreed I wouldn't want my 2k UST 'ON THE FLOOR''. Just get a normail projector.

If you filled your screen with 88”, there is no way you are projecting 120” picture on it. Agreed you picked a screen. Besides if you had bigger screen you still won’t be to project it cause you need to be lower and out. Yeah, bad choice in furniture. Either you should return the screen and furniture or return the projector. Btw, it is made by Xiaomi.

The pic is wonky from projector anyhow, I’d never buy a short throw projector that costs so much anyhow. I honestly get better results with my £200 nebula projector.

just move the furniture you got slightly more away from the wall. hahah i dont see the problem haha. the poor image screen is on you , you need the alr screen or maybe the motorised floor projecting alr screen (its alot of money though but worth it)

All these problems you have is on you for not knowing how to use a short throw laser projector... Because of the short distance and angle you HAVE to use a special screen that is totally flat and perfect. It is wise to do research on what you are bying before you buy.

Mount it on the ceiling and flip the output in the setup. The unit shows in inches what it needs to produce a screen size to your liking. So It's kinda like buying a car with 17 inch wheels and bitching cause you can't put 18 inch wheels on it... Should have done your homework before you shilled out the big bucks.

Ah, the classic 'do your research' line. Of course I did my research, and the reason I uploaded this was to share information that I did not encounter. Information such as: 1) You need tall ceilings, 8 feet or greater 2) If you don't, this thing will be on the floor (some may be OK with this compromise, but I'm not) 3) If you want 120" projection size, then despite the 'short throw' claim, it'll have to be 3-4 feet away from the wall - making a good layout/proper Feng Shui futile
