Interestingly, Marvel's Loki was created in the 1940s, decades before Thor and most other known heroes. He first appeared in an issue of the "Venus" series as an episodic villain of the titular heroine.

I think aside from Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr., one of the scenes that showed that this MCU thing had legs was Tom Hiddleston acting against Anthony Hopkins and showing us there was some real substance here.

tom hiddleston is such an underrated actor. hes one of the finest. knows how to play the straightman and get laughs and knows when to turn it off and still be captivating! the wholoe cast is incredible and full of no over actors. they know timing. thats also why loki is a successful franchise.. mcu wise..

It's always great to see some of your favorite youtubers collaborate. This was a fun watch

New subscriber here, came over from New Rockstars! I love this discussion about Loki. My Dad and I went to see the first Avengers movie together. He grew up reading Fantastic Four, Captain America and Thor but hadn’t kept up with comics and hadn’t seen any other Marvel movie. I hadn’t read any comic books but had seen every Marvel movie leading up to it. After the movie, my Dad kept saying how he couldn’t get over Loki being a “bad guy”, because he couldn’t take him seriously - because Loki was never taken seriously in the comics! But for me, I had no preconceived notions of who Loki “was” in the comics, before the Thor movies or the first Avengers movie, so I just accepted Tom Hiddleston’s version of the character. I’ve had a much more enjoyable ride with the character as a result.

Calling Loki an iago type character is so fitting this is why he works so well because he is constantly being a good brother while simultaneously stabbing thor with a knife to get what he wants

Doctor Doom needs to be able to be able to bring that able of Gravitas to everything he does, to have a full personality reaction to everything he does. Tom's Loki in the movies is like how Doom is in the Comics, they are iconic because everyone understands them and they are 3d at this point.

First, they're nothing alike in the comics. Hiddleston's Loki was first a spoiled whiny brat who then became a loser who gets humiliated by everyone and has sudden change of heart for good despite murdering children and women in the first Avengers movies. Doctor Doom is none of those things - maybe except for being a brat, back when he was still in university with Reed and before he became a supervillain. Second, how about making Loki act like, you know, Loki? And it's funny how you mention these two, considering during the latter part of JMS's run on Thor both of them teamed up and did the most horrific stuff you can imagine supervillains do. They were both despicable and evil in that story.

Ha, a fun crossover/collaboration - I've been watching both of these channels for years now, though had fallen off a bit on both (Comicstorian ironically as I read more comics, can't fully explain that one, New Rockstars just because I can't catch many movies in theatres, and they can get really spoiler-y with video titles/thumbnails sometimes), even if I'm still a fan. Nice to see Benny go head-to-head with Erik Voss, especially as I have wondered about this very topic myself, would've watched an hour or more of this. Quick tangent since it was brought up: I think one of the problems with Chris Hemsworth's Thor has been...actually, it might be a version of the issue Benny raises for comic Loki: the MCU hasn't really known what it wants Thor to be like, so we seem to get different takes in every film, somewhat similar to the other versions (especially as Hemsworth can keep a level of continuity), but a bit disjointed. In addition, they literally have no idea what they really *want to do with* Thor - what things are *really* important to him, should he be the fantasy epic or an Earth-based hero or doing cosmic adventures, which also leads to unsure tone and story. With Dark World the main exception, his solo movies have tried to ask something about who he is, though the 1st & Ragnarok did the best really doing so. Infinity War & Endgame messed with a few things in the MCU but nothing more than the Guardians & Thor - what appeared to be proper character arcs were disrupted, and they were forced to deal with the fallout/setup in a way characters like Iron Man and Captain America didn't, as they were done, or characters like Ant-Man or Spider-Man didn't, as they didn't need to so directly tackle things from those movies. Honestly, the main reason I think Loki isn't working is a weird push-pull between two sources of division (and likely editorial mandates): a want to be a bit more like (or at least appeal to the fandom of) MCU Loki but also the standard "bring everyone back to status quo" mandate that undid Superior Spider-Man and Infamous Iron Man (whatever Doom's run was called) and Loki's less villainous era. Instead of Loki being able to grow, he needs to somehow remain a guy who can be something of a villain doing certain types of schemes but now he also has to seem more like "Thor's brother who isn't that bad of a guy, so maybe he's not being bad guy" that creates a poorly pulled together concept. Benny hits on how I'd fix it (try to have long-time core writers/editors/consultants for certain characters), but I'm not so sure it'd work, given that's a hell of a job that I'm not sure people would really want (especially not for the long-term, as would be needed) but also especially given the propensity for Marvel (and I assume DC) to just randomly bring in characters from another comic/corner of the universe without ensuring it doesn't conflict with their use elsewhere (like their solo title).

Surely the Iterative Multiverse provides an underpinning for the writer pivots which you highlight? Sylvie/Lady Loki is supposed to be a narrative counterpoint - the Trickster/Jester/Mischief archetype is barely contained Chaos, it inserts another perspective which if absorbed yields previously unknown/forbidden/occluded knowledge/wisdom onto any situation. The dual purpose of the trickster is often forgotten, insofar as they act like a vaccine for a given trick/scam/ruse into the consciousness of the Aesir. Unfortunate that Thanos got wise to the playbook and so could mitigate against it.

I just wish we could let villains be villains. Quite making popular bad guys become antiheroes just because they are popular (sans joker). And before anyone chimes in with the character growth clause: Peter Parker has been consistently more broke than well off. Batman has been a loner longer than a team player. Sigh.

Benny you and Rob from comics explained should really have a hand in all comic book movies🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️
