THE PROBLEM W/ THE DARK KNIGHT'S ROBIN

Ойын-сауық

We've spoke about The Dark Knight's Batman, Joker , Two - Face and Bane...
It was only a matter of time before we discussed The Dark Knight's Boy Wonder, Robin ... allegedly.
Joseph Gordon Levitt represented that character in The Dark Knight Rises, though he was less a sidekick and more of a setup for the future of the character.

I like John Blake as a character. I don’t think he was ever meant to truly be Robin. I think he was always meant to be the next Batman. Having his name be Robin was more so an Easter egg. He’s an idea like Batman.

I believe years back I read that Joseph Gordon Levitt was asked if WB approached him if he would be open to making a sequel or what not where he became Batman… he said he would be open to but only under one condition. If Christopher Nolan was the one making it. And consider Nolan has said multiple times, and reiterating during the press tour for Oppenheimer, that he will never do another superhero movie.

Honestly my biggest problem with TDK incarnations of characters is in how badly Nolan did Barbara Gordon. He literally gave Barbara her cinematic debut (not counting Batman & Robin there as she was a different character in that) and what does he do? Give her zero lines and makes her a background character being held at gunpoint. You wasted Barbara, Nolan!

I actually really liked the ending of the dark knight rises because in a way it made sense that Bruce would quietly retire because in the beginning of this film Bruce was a broken man in a broken body, grieving and clearly didn't want to be batman ever again. So when he leaves the mantle to John he sees someone who cared about Gotham as much as he did before he became incredibly broken. However as you said this character in undercooked and undeveloped making it a little hollow for a sendoff

I'm actually going in another direction: I agree with Nolan that "Robin doesn't fit this series", but not because "adapting one of the Bat sidekicks wouldn't work." Specifically: For such a Jim Gordon focused series, why was a 2 film Batgirl arc not in the plans for the trilogy? And that "she took the kids and left town" line at the start of Rises was...WOW. I can only take that as aggressively, and exclusively, "cult of the dude" decision making, even when it doesn't make any sense.

The scene where he explains how he figured out Bruce is Batman is so stupid. He saw that Bruce was putting on a fake smile, so he must be Batman. Nolan clearly held the belief that a Robin can’t work in a “realistic” interpretation of Batman so this was his terrible compromise. This is why I believe the Reeves Batman series NEEDS a Robin. I have no desire for another realistic Batman movie series without Robin. Batman’s sidekick does not hold back the character, he lifts him up. Bruce adopting a son who is a mirrored version of himself allows Bruce to become more hopeful and heal as he is able to help that boy move past his trauma in a way he never could

The idea that Batman isn't any more sane than the villains he fights, fundamentally breaks the idea of Batman. It's a flexible enough idea to break with such a variation (so to speak), but still much of the point to Batman is that he is a superbly sane man fighting insanity and winning. The Batsuit takes advantage of their weaknesses, but he's basically a solo SWAT detective using non-lethal special weapons and tactics in personal duels with more-or-less-evil madness, minimizing their damage to the world and restoring sanity.

I may be in the minority here but I loved the Dark Knight Rises’ Robin. Nolan found a way to honor the spirit of the character without making Batman look like a sociopath. It’s one of the rarely spoken truths of the Batman mythos... Robin is a POV character for a child. Once you age out of elementary school, the notion of Bruce Wayne putting a literal child in harms way completely takes you out of your suspension of disbelief.

This movie in general is often thought of as one of the most disappointing comic book movies and personally when I first watched it I kind of hated it and years later I still don't really care for it. Honestly this was probably Christopher Nolan's sloppiest film. I think a big part of the problem is built into Christopher Nolan's understanding of this version of Batman is that he doesn't want to be Batman, he wants to end. I mean it's built into the premise The Dark Knight even and so this leads you a lot of problems because the concept of a Batman who doesn't want to be Batman is extremely antithetical to the source this has never been a recurring thing in the comics that Batman doesn't want to be Batman, that he's looking for reasons to retire. This unfortunately solidifies this version of Batman as just a Nolan character and not really an adaptation of the comic book character of Batman. The film, despite wanting to take a more "realistc" approach with Batman than traditionally depicted, suffers from too many leaps in logic such as Bruce Wayne miraculously arriving back in Gotham after escaping his underground prison, GCPD officer John Blake (who shouldn't have been Robin) happening to know that Wayne is Batman, and Bane’s lair being beneath Wayne Tower’s armory without Wayne or Lucius Fox knowing to name a few. One of the most multifaceted and glaring problems come with Tom Hardy’s Bane, who, admittedly is literally nothing like his comic book counterpart whatsoever and is also extremely disappointing as a character. Everything from his voice has always been the subject of heavy criticism for being too hard to take seriously and a mefiocre design, his changed nationality (Bane is Hispanic in the comics), his motivation, his background and his origin is entirely different to the point where it might as well be a different character. The film is also undermined by Bane’s less than underwhelming downfall in two major ways. The twist that Miranda Tate is actually Talia al Ghul instantly negates Bane’s impact because all the credit for the masterplan is taken away from Bane, making him little more than a thug who has been acting, not out of greed or revolutionary zeal, but because he was told by his leader. Essentially, he’s reduced to a bodyguard/subordinate for the sake of having one of the most obvious and underwhelming plot twists in superhero cinematic history. As is, it falls flat, and so does Bane’s arc upon completion, especially since he’s easily killed off by Catwoman a minute later. I really wasn't a huge fan of this interpretation of Talia. Talia (when writen properly) is not a straight-up villain and she is more morally ambiguous and genuinely loves Batman however she is very loyal to her father and his mission despite not agreeing with his dystopic methods. I always prefer Talia to be more morally ambiguous than just a straight-up villain. On that note, Tate’s deceitful role as Batman’s new love interest doesn’t work, either. Not only is there little if any chemistry in the film between Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, but their love scene seems downright illogical and artificial because Wayne just spent eight years as a hermit due to losing Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight. Yes, Alfred encouraged him to move on, and it’s certainly possible that he’d recover from such grief. The ending is a tad contrived as well, at least in execution. A lot of people felt that things wrap up too neatly by having Blake discover the Batcave. At the same time, however, the reveal that Blake’s first name is Robin feels tacked on for fan service. It can’t help but make your eyes roll, as does the closing scene in which Alfred sees Wayne and Kyle at the French café. As for Anne Hathaway as Catwoman it honestly just feels like another actress playing Catwoman. I never buy it when she plays the more villainous side of the character and it doesn't seem like it's intentional either. It's honestly just kind of bland.

I never really saw him as Robin in the traditional sense. More of an easter egg than anything. I think a continuation of the story would be pretty cool. I came up with an idea. Put quite a bit of thought into it. If anyone is interested, I would love to hear someone's opinion on it. Here it is. "Gotham Knights" The story picks up seven years after the events of The Dark Knight Rises. Bruce Wayne is still presumed to be dead, and former GCPD Detective John Blake has been acting as Gotham City's Dark Knight. He didn't take up the mantle of Batman however. Instead, John Blake put his own spin on it and took to the rooftops as The Red Robin. Blake has had Commissioner Jim Gordon and Lucius Fox assisting him as they did Bruce Wayne years ago. We learn a bit about the criminals The Red Robin has taken down over the past seven years such as Waylon "Croc" Jones. A drug and weapons runner and enforcer for Gotham's street gangs who became notorious for committing acts of cannibalism to intimidate his enemies. (This version of Croc isn't a metahuman of course. He's just this massive black dude who suffers from Ichthyosis and has his teeth filed into points). Pamela "Poision Ivy" Isley. A brilliant scientist turned echo terrorist who attempted to destory Gotham in order to "restore the natural beauty than man destroyed with their steel and concrete." Lastly, Dr. Harleen Quinzel. A psychiatrist who lost her job after becoming dangerously obsessed with the Joker while she treated him at Arkham Asylum. Following the Joker's transfer to Black Gate Prison and subsequent execution, Quinzel slipped into complete psychosis and because committing Joker inspired acts of terror under the name Harlequin. Now, a gang war between newly minted crime lords Oswald "The Penguin" Cobblepot and Roman "Black Mask" Sionis has erupted in the streets of Gotham. When Jim Gordon is tragically killed and both gangs brashly take credit for it, his 25-year-old daughter Barbara, a discharged U.S. Marine, returns to Gotham looking for answers, and vengeance. Barbara is welcomed in by John Blake, and she adopts the mantle of "Batwoman" as a tribute to the man who save her and her little brother from Harvey "Two Face" when they were kids. Together, with the help of Lucius Fox's son, Luke and two troubled teenagers, Drake Todd, aka Hood and Stephanie Cain aka The Bat, they wage all out war on the two gangs.

Unfortunately, The Dark Knight Rises is the weakest of the trilogy. A Robin that doesn’t make sense, an excellent version of Bane basically killed offscreen, a lackluster appearance of Talia Al Ghul, and a Catwoman that barely resembled her comics counterpart. It’s still not a bad movie, not at all, but the final movie of the Nolan trilogy could have been so much better.

That is what kills Bane's entire arc is that he isn't actually the brains he's the face of the organization. The brains is Talia who is also poorly written. Only for it to loop back to the first movie. Had there been a faceless villain then Talia reveal and no Bane I feel the movie would have played better or no Talia and focus on Bane's intellect and his need to challenge the Bat to prove who is the best.

Despite the message that the film was trying to convey, not ANYONE can be Batman. Bruce spent most of his life receiving the very best training from masters in various fields. In the comics and other media, the Robins and other members of the Bat Family are trained extensively by Batman himself. Here it's just: "Here's all my stuff. Good luck!" Blake may be a trained police officer, but if police training was anywhere near the level of Batman's, the city wouldn't need Batman in the first place! Realistically, Blake isn't much better than the Batman copycats in The Dark Knight. I thought it was a joke when Batman said that the difference between them was that he's not wearing hockey pads, but apparently his mindset is that all it takes is gadgets to be Batman.

Didn’t realize how many elements of Tim Drake’s character were in John Blake until seeing this video. And yeah, the film was missing a lot with John and other characters. Still enjoyed it, if not quite as much as the prior entries in the trilogy. And who *is* Catwoman? I’d be interested in seeing what you think of the ways the character has been portrayed onscreen in general… or at least how you think the version in “Rises” compares to the ones in “Batman Returns,” “Gotham,” and “The Batman.” :)

And i always preferred Begins as a BATMAN movie, even if technically Dark Knight is a better MOVIE. I was so disappointed. I honestly don't know how people like Rises. But i'm glad they do. If I we're making the movie, I would have taken a page out of Batman Beyond. Have Bruce be retired, but maybe when Alfred had to run an errand in Gotham one day Robin was trying to steal the tires off of his car. They tracked him down back to home for boys, instead of punishing him, Bruce adopted him. Began training him to be his replacement, and give him a chance at a better life. However, Robin ended up going his own way. Became a detective to continue bringing criminals to justice. It would help explain why he is the one leading the rebellion, as well as why he is next in line to take up the mantle of Batman.

In fact, I have an idea that is more suitable than Nolan's handling of Robin. On one hand, stay true to the original and introduce Jason Todd as Robin, but make his death an extremely dramatic turning point event that makes Batman rethink what it means to be a vigilante. On the other hand, remove Dick Grayson because his origin story is too cliché and doesn't fit a modern adaptation. The aftermath of Jason's death would completely transform the meaning of Robin. There would still be successors to Robin, but it would no longer mean being a vigilante like Batman, and Robin would not inherit Batman's mantle. Instead, Robin would become a new symbol that brings a completely new meaning to Gotham City's protector, like the hacker group DedSec in the Ubisoft game Watch Dogs - ubiquitous and not just anyone wearing suits to become a vigilante, but completely sublimated. Of course, the above idea is based on my idea of rebooting the DCEU version of Batman. I think if DCEU's Batman were rebooted as a work similar to Nolan's trilogy, it might quietly make up for the various mistakes Nolan made and inherit the good parts of Nolan's trilogy. In addition, it is based on the artistic design of Batman by Zack Snyder's team, which would be a perfect presentation of Batman. However, what I am talking about is not movies, but video games. Because DCEU movies are already a thing of the past and are completely dead products. But what if it could be made into video-games? That would be the redemption of Snyderverse Batman. I am currently planning to crowdfund with my friends in the gaming industry within two years. If you are interested, please PM me. Thank you very much.

In my vision, Barbara Gordon, Tim Drake, and others can join the Bat Family in a whole new way, becoming a behind-the-scenes, invisible society similar to Dedsec in Watch Dogs. They can use the internet as a channel to expose the truth and call on Gotham citizens to get involved and do something. Moreover, they will completely elevate Robin's symbol and surpass the meaning of the Bat symbol, becoming a new form of Gotham Knights.

The problem with the Nolan trilogy is that aside from an iconic, beloved, original portrayal of a seminal character in the second movie ( Eckhart was equally great ) the whole series was kind of..... eh. The mystique surrounding Ledgers death and his role cloud a lotbif memories, and covers up a bunch of rather average movies ( Dark Knight obviously the best). We got a Batman that lasted a month or two at best, went into hiding for 7 yrs, came back, was immediately sidelined again, only to o ce again at the end disappear. A whole slew of Batman's rouge gallery never even mentioned. No aura of a Batman world, Gotham City is boring, and plain. Aside from good performances from the cast nothing really was memorable. The John Blake thing seemed forced abd hokey. Using the Robin moniker as a sake of pleasing fan boys. I get some wanting that realism and grounding. But this is Batman. Its a comic book character. There just seems a lack of charm in this trilogy Imopo.
