The Private Secretary 1935 Alastair Sim, Edward Everett Horton
Фильм және анимация
A comedy of mistaken identity, "The Private Secretary" was essentially a quota quickie from Twickenham Studios that starred Edward Everett Horton as a mild mannered clergyman who is impersonated by a young playboy (Barry MacKay), in a plot to deceive his rich uncle. Adapted from a famous stage farce the film allows a rare opportunity to see Edwardian actors Oscar Asche & Sydney Fairbrother, and in addition there is also a brief appearance by Alastair Sim in one of his earliest roles near the end of the film. "The Private Secretary" was shown twice on Channel 4 but has been unseen since this transmission in 1994, and has not been released on either VHS or dvd. The current copyright status of this film is unknown, but it may now be an "orphan work" as defined by UK law.

This is an example of why I only watch films from the 30's to the 50's.

Thank you. I've realised just how good our 30s films were over the last few years.
One of the absolutely cutest movies ever. I just plain loved it, from start to finish. 🙂
Alistair Sim and and Edward Everett Horton!! The best! Soooo funny!
1935 not only a long time ago, but out of this world in social customs and culture. No cellphones. No antibiotics. No rappers... Excellent film. Thanks sincerely for post. A humorous film, professional 😅 genuine character actors. Edward Everett Horton one of my favorite humorous actors. 😅 Fox Hunt anyone ?

They wish they had antibiotics you mook - you know how many people died or were maimed from child illnesses we don’t have anymore??!! Polio, measles, mumps, chicken pox, rabies, unsafe drinking water, poisonous toxic factory steam. God people are stupidly!!!

No antibiotics? Of course they existed those days.

@youlamatou Not "of course". Fleming only discovered penicillin in 1928. It took time to study how to use and make antibiotics. Doctors weren't really using antibiotics till the 40s and 50s.

FUN MOVIE! Edward Everett Horton: The voice of the storyteller from "Bullwinkle and Rocky"! Nice to actually see him in a "live" capacity! A very unmistakable voice!

Very glad to see that you still post good old movies on your channel. Thanks😊
Absolutely delightful! Well-written, acted, directed, great musical accents! Thank you so much for finding this elusive film and sharing it with us!!
Alistair was one of those people that got better looking as he aged. Great actor.
A glimpse at the bygone age of Edwardian farce.I could watch Edward Everett Horton anytime. Thanks for posting.
Great to see proper acting. Delightful film.
O jolly good… enjoyed the movie very much TA!
A charming film spoilt by an advert every 5 minutes. Thank you for sharing such pleasant viewing.

Well, I was expecting Alastair Sim in a co-starring role, like the Inspector Hornley movies I enjoyed so much.

I wish there were more Inspector Hornleigh movies. They are hilarious.
Edward Everett Horton, as Reverend Robert Spalding, was the narrator of "Fractured Fairytails" cartoon. He had a very distinct and novel voice. Fractured Fairy Tales was a segment on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

A good step above most quota quickies. Thoroughly enjoyable. Many Thanks!
This is one comedy that really had me laughing out loud. Both the visuals and the dialogue were hilarious!
Quite a lot of historical interest here. It´s based on the ¨famous play¨by ¨the late Sir Charles Hawtrey¨. Charles Hawtrey of Carry On fame was no relation but adopted the name after the old man died. Quite a nerve! Meanwhile Kenny Everett, born Maurice Cole, adopted the surname Everett in tribute to the marvellous Edward Everett Horton, who was presumably slumming it on the British side of the Atlantic for this modest production, being normally a major Hollywood support actor. Great fun!
Fairly enjoyable, without pretension. Comedies of errors are a comic staple and come out nicely when talentedly acted out.
What a wonderful show I laughed so hard thank you

Confession... I LOVE the MAID 🙂
Poor Robert He certainly was mild tempered
Oscar Asche was the star of this to me.
Very entertaining
very good!
Looks worth seeing for the cast alone. Not to be confused with the German film from which SUNSHINE SUSIE was adapted...
Who plays the housemaid ? She is very good in her role.

Very early Alistair Sim.
Alastair Sim IS in this movie.
A comedy of mistaken identity-Edward Everett Horton stars as a mild mannered clergyman who is impersonated by a young playboy (Barry mackay) in a plot to deceive his rich uncle! I liked we Edward Everett Horton in lonely wives and this is probably his second movie as the star- even though it’s a British flick! Al’s. Alastair sim -a long way from the inspector hornsleigh movies and Scrooge in a Christmas carol! Fox hunf. Anyone??

By my count (per IMDB, and listed by year), this was Edward Everett Horton’s 79th film appearance. He’s listed as top billed in most of them, including his first film.
Thank you for the share.....Love the movie.....and do you know..........

The channels try to blame KZread, but it's the channel that decides how many and where. If they say it's not them they are lying.
Those mock working class accents back then were cringey as hell.
