Wow, I am not a religious man, but I can tell this is much more than a religious movie. The people who worked on it were clearly creating a story that kept the audience's interest with conflicted and deep characters. The movie could have easily said "don't fuck with god!" But instead it decided to focus on the characters and take artistic liberties to the max so that non-religious people could still enjoy the movie. Also this song is badass. Needed to be said.

pandas rock ill say this... i am an atheist to begin with... but acording to the story here, it couldnt have been only to release the jewish people, it also had to do with teaching them a lesson, according to the story god himself hardened the heart of pharoe intentionally so he would refuse to release them, they also mention it in the song, why would he do it if not to intentionally force them to suffer through the 10 plagues?

I also suspect that the last plague, the death of the first born of each house, was God's revenge for the Egyptians killing so many Hebrew infants. You do *not* mess with the Big G.

***** What does a rusty chariot at the bottom of a sea have to do with anything? The Bible was likely a poor way of describing weird phenomenon that happened in the ancient days. It was easy back then to pass it off as "God." Lightning was thought to be Zeus, but we know now that it's nothing more than electrical imbalance in the sky thanks to Science.

"Even now I wish that God had chose another, serving as your foe on his behalf was the last thing that I wanted." That is my favourite line out of the whole movie. It just sums up everything. It's such a brilliant line - showing the idea that Moses was chosen to be the deliverer, even though he never asked for it and never wanted to be. Beautiful.

No, he was acting like a father would. He did warn Pharaoh what would happen if he disobeyed. Pharaoh could've freed them earlier, but his stubbornness eventually cost him his son. God, himself, says in the book of Malachi, "I do not take pleasure in punishing the wicked".

Actually in the exodus it says that God was the one who hardened Pharoh's heart. He did that so he could show off his power by massacring innocent Egyptians. He could have softened Pharoh's heart or just killed him instead.

  • @brigidtheirish

    @brigidtheirish

He wasn't showing off just to massacre innocent Egyptians. He was dispensing justice onto a land that had enslaved, beaten, and then *killed* many of His people. It seems horrific to us now, but retribution of this kind was pretty normal back then. One could even argue that God went easy on them. See what He did to the cities on the plain.

If there is one thing this scene teaches us. It is that you do not mess with God, who could wipe a country with a wave of his hand. He was going pretty easy on Egypt because he only sent plagues. He is the only being who has the right to take a life because he created us. Rameses' stubbornness caused the plagues even though God warned him what would happen.

I love the complex conflict in this movie. It's deeper than some evil person defying god and suffering the consequences. It shows a darker side of the story. In the end, it was god that slaughtered all those people. Not the Pharaoh. He was left with nothing when he had been brought up by his father to rule Egypt as best as he could. Amazing movie. Will definitely show it to my kids one day.

You have the right to pose that question. Why did God harden Pharaoh heart? Well the problem here is the the bible is scripture it is not theology. It was written in a language most I is do not understand and cannot always be translated perfectly. In translating things we lose sight of the true meaning of many parts of the bible. That's where theology comes in. Theologians look at it as it was mean to be and interpret God's word from the bible. At first it doesn't say God hardened Pharaoh's heart but that Pharaoh hardened his own. After a while it is stated that God hardened Pharaoh's heart. Still though this is the pharaoh doing it to himself. God is love and when you deny God and blasphemy against Him your heart becomes hardened. God says, not in this text, I will take your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. God wants Pharaoh to love him but he must put his faithful first and so he allowed pharaoh to separate himself. Pharaoh became one who had no love left with a heart of stone. That was Pharaoh's free will.

Then you're a brainwashed idiot. No human would be admired for that sort of behavior and humans are fallible. God has no such excuse. He is supposed to be omnipotent, omniscient, and benevolent. The whole story of the exodus is needless cruelty on innocents who didn't even do anything. The Egyptians didn't elect their Pharoh. The cattle certainly didn't do anything wrong. Neither did Egypts firstborn children. Yet they were ones to be punished.

One of the many things I admire about this film is how powerful Ralph Fiennes performance is in this film. Not only does he give a tour-de-force vocal performance, but he sings also. I find it strange how Kilmer never sang in this movie, as in Mission: Top Secret, and The Doors, he sang, and he was a pretty good singer too. Maybe the studio wanted a different style of singing? It also has to be said Kilmer gives a strong performance here too, and the crew seemed to really admire his work ethic.

Even though I am an atheist I fucking love this movie, the beauty of this scene is not only beautifully tragic and almost difficult to watch, but it shows how even the god we should be rooting for ends up committing atrocities worse than the Egyptians, putting an emphasis on survival, and bringing up the question if the ends justify the means. A fantastic movie for the religious and non-religious alike.

I like the fact in this movie that Moses was depicted more humane who actually laments his position as a messenger of god, unlike the OT version of Moses, who behaved quite sociopathic, showing no empathy toward the people who raised him.

To be fair, very few people get much character development in the Old Testament. The account was more focused on the actions and moral lessons than interpersonal relationships or motivations. And Moses *did* try to talk his way out of the job at the start.

The way Moses acted in the OT was far from sociopathic and he continuously begged the pharaoh to just release his people with no success. That's far from sociopathic, rather that's what we see here where he was empathetic but knowing that the pharaoh wouldn't listen and had brought his people suffering.

Everyone in the comment section needs to repent. Ur hearts are harden just like pharaoh’s. U know this is the real one and true God yet u just say “I’m atheist but this a good movie” God is trying to tell u something. Stop playing with Him and repent. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.

As an atheist, I love this movie in the same sense I love film based on any form of myth. I don't feel the need to get indignant when I watch films like "Clash of the Titans". This is a supremely well-made film that deserves praise for its animation quality as well as supremely good music.
