THE PRETTIEST TOWN IN ENGLAND: RYE
THE PRETTIEST TOWN IN ENGLAND: RYE// Happy Tuesday, Today we're sharing our visit to beautiful Rye in East Sussex. It's one of the prettiest towna in England and a must visit! If you make it to Rye, make sure to go up the tower of St. Mary's Church (if you're not afraid of heights and confined spaces of course); the views from up there are amazing! Kirsten & Jörg xx

I love it when the old style villages keep their old world charm. So precious and lovely to watch.

The town (sic) of Rye has changed very little over the past 250 years because it isn't really on the way to anywhere. It sits on a hill in the middle of a huge, pancake-flat reclaimed marsh now used for grazing thousands of sheep. The reason why Rye still has a railway station (on the Marshlink Line between Hastings and Ashford) is because the local road network is so poor. The medieval Mermaid Inn is well worth a visit. If I'm travelling by train between Chichester and Canterbury I break my journey at Rye so that I can call in at the Mermaid for lunch.
Kirsten and Jorg---I am SO thankful for these lovely videos! You may not have any idea how many of us in other countries would absolutely LOVE to visit these villages---but cannot. And yet you two---are taking us there--and we can enjoy it vicariously through you. Many, many thanks! ♥

Perfectly said, Margie Tucker. That is exactly what I was feeling as I watched this video. Also, what absolutely AMAZED me is that such historically important places like this are devoid of CROWDS, which is so unusual here in America! It seemed so peaceful...

@@ultraviolet13881 - Rye, on the border between the southern English counties of Kent and Sussex, isn't really on the way to anywhere. The pretty little town sits in splendid isolation on top of a sandstone hill surrounded by miles of pancake-flat sheep pasture (Romney Marsh) whose human inhabitants were either drowned by the sea surges of the late 12th Century, or killed by the virulent Malaria epidemics of the mid 17th Century. Rye retained its railway station (on the Marshlink Line between Hastings and Ashford) because the road network in the area is so poor that a substitute public 'bus service could not be provided. During the Middle Ages the French kept sailing over and burning the place down, which is why Rye was eventually walled and gated. The town used to stand at the edge of the sea but now it's two miles from the nearest beach.

Oh I really enjoyed this! We were in Rye a few years ago for our son’s wedding. We stayed in a very tall old house on the Main Street. There wasn’t a straight wall or floor in the place it was so old, and there were beams and wood panelling everywhere. The legal ceremony for the wedding was at the town hall and included a town crier who was in full coat and hat, ringing his bell and announcing the marriage as he walked with the wedding party to a nearby hotel for the reception! Rye will always have a special place in our hearts x

And from the church tower (St Mary’s), Elizabeth Mapp spied on our Lucia doing calisthenics … feigning to Tilling Society that she had come down with the influenza to avoid speaking Italian… which she claimed to speak fluently..to Mr Wyse’s sister, the Contessa de Maglione…. Elizabeth went to St Mary’s tower…highest point in Tilling… to look into Le Jardino Secreto at Mallards and thus expose Lucia as a fraud!

Also the 2014 BBC adaptation mini series of Mapp and Lucia. So much of this video was recognisable from the mini series (which is a great adaptation, highly recommend). Not to mention Mallards being filmed at Lamb House. Really enjoyed this video Kirsten and Joerg. ❤

My husband Sheldon and I went there in 2012. It was amazing! We had a bit of an adventure. We arrived by train and thought we could store our luggage (lots of it) at the train station lockers. Big mistake! None there. Fortunately the local travel agent allowed us to park our luggage in his office. What a great guy and what a great start to our day there! Amazing!

Ohh what fun! I loved this video! We fell in love with the corner fireplace in the Henry James house. I love Rye more than the cotswolds. The color of the water, it was just perfect. Hello Kirsten & Joerg, I’m binge watching your beautiful gentle videos and they are helping me through a few stressful days, thank you for sharing, I wondered if you have ever been to the Floral Fringe fair in Sussex, this year it’s at Leonardslee Gardens near Horsham over the weekend of 4th/5th June, all things vintage and quintessentially British, I think you’d love it. 🌻
Kirsten and Joerg you are absolutely my favorite bloggers ! Everything is so beautifully done . The houses , shops and gardens in Rye are so lovely . I probably won't be able to get back to my beloved England until I retire in 3 years so watching your vlogs is the next best thing . Thank you so much for all the work you do to bring them to us 🙏💕🇨🇦
I’m so pleased you enjoyed Rye. We loved living there. As soon as your video started and I saw the China, I knew you’d been to Cobbles! It was a good choice because they were always known for their gluten free scones. We had our wedding reception at the Mermaid Inn and all our guests stayed there for the weekend, it’s known for being haunted but we had an amazing time. You should now watch Mapp & Lucia but the 1985 version with Prunella Scales and Geraldine James, it’s very funny and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Thanks for sharing another great video.

This was so beautifully filmed and the music choices were wonderful. This is such a special video that I will re watch many times. So peaceful and lovely. How did you get so much of it filmed with no one else around? This was such quality work and your fashion choice for that day was perfect, Kirsten.
Rye looks wonderful! What a pretty and very well-kept town. And, so close to lovely walks at the nature reserve and seaside. It sounds practically perfect! Loved the view from the church top…thank-you for taking us there with you, Kirsten and Joerg!
How very very charming! I want to know, did you go back for Jorg to get his favorite beer? Somehow the town reminds me a bit of Victoria B.C. We live in WA State in the US and the closest to England we will ever get is just over the border to Canada. You two love-birds! You seem like newlyweds all the time, wherever you go, enjoying life and special moments together.I had almost forgotten how on our visit to “little England” as newlyweds half a century ago, my husband bought a six pack of Apple Jack to take home. I hope Jorg got his beer!! Thank you for sharing your adventure today. 💕from🇺🇸.

My husband and I visited Rye a few years back. My husband is from Rye, New York so it had been on our agenda for years. The Lamb house was not open that day, but we visited the Mermaid inn and the Church. I got beautiful footage from the top of the Church. I’m glad I didnt go up the steps to the roof when bells might start ringing. Townspeople were so friendly. All were interested in Rye, NY and we learned lots about the Lamb story and hauntings at Mermaid Inn. My husband got to meet the mayor and he showed my husband the remains of the man in the Gibbit upstairs in the town hall. Absolutely wonderful town for us Yanks.
Exquisite. Once you tackle the parking situation, Rye really is the most incredibly picturesque village. So many gardens, gorgeous nearby hamlets and villages to visit too. The area is a great idea for a week long summer holiday. Great Dixter, the wild and romantic garden of Christopher Lloyd is nearby too. Gorgeous. Thank you for this feast for the eyes!
What a lovely place to live as well as visit.
I appreciate the long slow shots of some of the interiors and table tops. It allows me to get a really good look at all of the interesting items. Thank you!
I used to live and work in Rye in the early 90s, working in the Mermaid Inn as one of the receptionists. It was a very interesting job! Later, I worked in one of the estate agents offices, even more interesting! I came originally from Bexhill-on-Sea, which you should visit, if you have not done so. The Del la Ward Pavilion there is a fascinating building!

I loved visiting Rye in 2018! It's just beautiful (though the steep cobbled streets were hard on arthritic feet-- worth the pain!) Fletcher's House Tea Room is a lovely place for a cuppa and a slice of something yummy after visiting St. Mary's Church. There are also lots of independent art galleries. The Mermaid Inn is a must for an afternoon G&T or a pint.
