    Years ago, I had a customer needing work on a 62 Cadillac. Went to pick it up on my 9000 lb capacity lift, could only pick it up about 6". Odd, I looked the car over trying to figure out why it wouldn't come up- then I realized the windows didn't roll down- looking closer I realized they were about 2" thick. Went and talked to the customer - he said "yeah, I should have mentioned this was a secret service car" Had Kennedy been in it, who knows how long he would have lived......

    If you are ever in Southern California, you have to go to the Reagan Library. It is not that political but there is an entire wing created just for Presidential Transport including a full size Air Force one when they used the 707. You can walk through it and take a picture getting off like you were the President. They also have Marine One, Limo one and other various means of moving a President. The cool thing is that the museum is run by retired members of the Secret Service, some who traveled with Presidents and have some cool stories to tell.

    And if you are ever in the Dayton, Ohio area, you can also visit Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the National Museum of the US Air Force where they have the William E. Boeing Presidential Gallery to view a historic collection of presidential aircraft, and walk through four of them, including aircraft used by Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower as well as the Boeing 707 known as SAM (Special Air Mission) 26000, which was used by eight presidents from Kennedy through Clinton -- best known as the plane that transported President Kennedy's body from Dallas back to Washington. The entire museum is Free and great for folks who love aviation history.

    You forgot something else the Secret Service does with the retired Beasts: they use them for driver training to practice evasive maneuvers and motorcade formations. They won't actually destroy them until they're no longer needed in this role. The unspoken reason why they chose to repurpose a commercial 747 instead of one newly built: one that's newly built could have hidden bugging or sabotage that's nearly impossible to detect once assembled, but taking one from commercial service means there is never any opportunity for that. Also, a proven low-mileage aircraft is less likely to run into problems than a brand new one. Those older Sea Kings they use honestly look the best of all the presidential helicopters. They're just so photogenic, which is probably the primary reason why they keep them around.

    @omgandwtf1

    11 сағат бұрын

    @Hebdomad7 sure but it's a calculation. Is the risk high enough that the political advantage it gives your rivals worth it? If the logistics are more difficult then that also means it's more dangerous, any time you do something out of the normal routine means there is increased risk of the potential for gaps and oversights that could result in something unfortunate happening, it doesn't even have to be dangerous to be a problem, if something happens and the plane can't take off from the disaster area until an hour later than originally planned maybe that sets of a cascade that leads to the president being late to a meeting with a foreign leader which while quite likely being fine from the perspective of both leaders could be used as an attack in various ways by the president's political opponents or citizens of the other country opposed to some type of agreement with the US being considered framing it as a deliberate slight increasing the political pressure on their leader possibly tanking the deal thus resulting in a policy failure and bad press for the US president once again causing more harm than good. Sure its not garunteed that any of these things would happen especially so if considering the nessesary chain of events that would be required to cause real harm, but the fact is that they remain possibilities and it's reasonable to conclude the risks don't outweigh the benefits especially when alternative paths might work instead, executive orders to help the victims, making the resources of the Whitehouse available to those aiding the region and obviously expressing publicly your determination to help those affected.

    I flew home on emergency leave from Japan on Navy military standby, ie, if there was an empty seat on the aircraft I got it. I was instructed to check into the tower at every connection to schedule another flight. When I got to Hawaii I headed to the tower and, voila! AF1, in full livery, was on the tarmac next to the tower. I didn't recognize it at first but immediately knew my mistake when I enter the tower and was confronted by a half dozen secret service agents who politely directed me to where I needed to be. And I found out it was actually AF2 as VP Bush was using the aircraft. The CPO who helped me get my next flight was rather PO'd at my encounter, as the secret service had called him about my transgression. Didn't get in trouble, but the Chief was pissed! Cheers....

    You are correct about the mid-air refueling, but your description of the airframes is off. Both A and B models are extensively modified to meet the role. That was the HUGE mistake made when it was decided to use already built airframes to make the B models. They had to be stripped to the basic airframe and totally rebuilt. It would have taken less money and time to build them from scratch.

    The cool part about the fact that AF1 can do aerial refuelling is that they can decide to intentionally take off at a lower level of fuel, than is necessary to reach its destination, to ensure its weight is lower and therefore it can takeoff in shorter distances, as well as reach cruise altitude in less time. I wonder how often they do this.

    A bit on the train used in the thumbnail, it is an EMD SD70ACe lettered for the 41st POTUS (4141). It's early life consisted of that of any other locomotive operated by the Union Pacific; hauling freight. Later in life it sat dormant. Finally it made it's last run as one of 2 trains pulling George Bushes funeral train leading the train with George Bush proper. The other train was lead by Union Pacific 1941, a military commemorative locomotive p. It's now sitting as a display in Texas, and it's engine, suspected to have been given to another locomotive (The Chicago Northwestern(CNW) Heritage unit) which was having engine troubles at roughly the same time. The CNW unit still being used today. For a gauge on the SD70ACe's age, the oldest of the SD70ACe has been in service since 2005, and the SD70 family can be traced back to the '80s

This aspect alone is an undertaking of monstrous proportions. Not only must they find the farthest accessible high point but everything in between. I suspect that choosing a decisive location for his speech that would minimize any overly complicated research into this particular issue would help. But I’m sure that they also have tons of other potential hostile moves that could be made towards the President that they also need to be privy to. I sure hope these Secret Service officials are paid well, because they sure are deserving of it.

    In the modern security state, the logistics for transport by train is very onerous. I would imagine their would be a lot of planning done to plot a precise route taking into account all of the rail traffic, grade crossings needed to be secured, bridges to be inspected, and all of the track for that matter. The last thing we need is a derailment due to track problems. It could also cost private carriers a lot of money to keep track clear along the route. All of the rails with the exception of the Northeast Corridor are own by private freight companies.

As for "missile carriers", that program never materialized. The Peacekeeper missiles ended up deployed just like Minuteman III until they were decommissioned. And incidentally, all military installations that are connected to the national freight networks depend on private freight carriers like CSX or Norfolk Southern to move stuff over the rails. I believe under federal law, they are supposed to prioritize military transport and in time of war, the national freight network can be brought under direct government control.

    I Rember seeing one of those early 2000's science shows(about the beast), they layered bullet proof glass about 5-6 inches thick on a stand. They used a 50 cal rifle and 2-3 bullets they broke through it to the other side, shooting the exact same spot. Now this test was done with not moving armored glass. "if" god forbid the motorcade came under attack the beast would be speeding the road at 75+ MPH and not sitting still. Also no secret service shooting back.

    I would rather have that than Trumps 13 year old girl, diapers and Rubles requirements.
